Yashasvi Jaiswal shone through and secured his maiden ODI ton and was ably supported by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as India won by 9 wickets to win the series 2-1. Yashasvi Jaiswal applied himself really well and deserved the ton and got the win for India. South Africa were put into bat first and rode on Quinton de Kock’s masterful ton to score 270 in 47.5 overs with Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna picked up 4 wickets apiece.
In the chase, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma put on 155 for the first wicket before Rohit fell. But Jaiswal carried on to get a ton while Virat Kohli got another unbeaten half-century as India got over the line inside 40 overs chasing down 271 and making it look like a cakewalk. South Africa were clueless on the field and with the ball.
Quinton de Kock’s ton alongside Kuldeep Yadav & Prasidh Krishna’s 4-wicket hauls highlighted South Africa’s 270 all out
Put into bat first, Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton opened the batting for South Africa while Arshdeep Singh had ball in hand for India. Arshdeep gave India the perfect start removing Rickelton for a duck. Temba Bavuma the captain came out to bat next. He started to build the innings with Quinton de Kock. They weathered the storm for the initial 8 overs or so.
Once Prasidh Krishna eventually came into the attack, he was taken to the cleaners as Quinton broke the shackles while Bavuma played the anchor’s role. India did not panic and Bavuma too slowed down a bit and dropped anchor but Quinton was taking the attack to the opposition. The duo added 113 runs for second wicket before Bavuma fell for 48 off 67 balls with 5 fours to his name. Ravindra Jadeja got his man while Virat Kohli took the catch.
Matthew Breetzke came out to bat next and started well since he was in red hot form throughout. Breetzke played his shots and so did Quinton as another stand was built as they put on 54 for the third wicket. Both Breetzke and Quinton looked good. Prasidh Krishna came back and broke the budding stand as he dismissed Breetzke for 24 off 23 balls with 2 sixes to his name. Aiden Markram came out to bat next and got off the mark but he did not last long as Krishna removed him for 1 off 3 balls. Dewald Brevis came out to bat next.
Quinton and Dewald Brevis started building a stand as the southpaw completed his 7th ODI ton vs India and 23rd overall. But Quinton was soon removed after getting a hundred as he was dismissed for 106 off 89 balls with 8 fours and 6 sixes to his name as Krishna suddenly got his 3rd wicket. Marco Jansen came out to bat next. Brevis and Jansen built up a solid stand and started to rescue South Africa.
Brevis and Jansen put on 35 between them before Kuldeep Yadav did the star turn as he removed Brevis for 29 off 29 balls with 2 fours and one six to his name. Corbin Bosch came out to bat next and got off the mark. But Kuldeep had two in the over as he removed Jansen for 17 off 15 balls with 2 fours to his name. Keshav Maharaj came out to bat next. The duo added 17 runs before Bosch fell for 9 off 12 balls as Kuldeep was on a roll.
Lungi Ngidi came out to bat next. Ngidi too did not last long as he fell for 1 off 10 balls with Kuldeep getting his 4th wicket. Ottneil Baartman came out to bat next at 11. Maharaj tried to add crucial runs while Baartman hung in there from one end. But it was not for long as Baartman was knocked over for 3 off 7 balls. Maharaj was unbeaten on 20 off 29 balls with 2 fours to his name. South Africa were bowled out for 270 in 47.5 overs with 12 extras given by the fielding side.
Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for India with figures of 4/41 in 10 overs. Prasidh Krishna came back to finish with 4/66 in 9.5 overs. Arshdeep Singh ended with 1/36 in 8 overs. Ravindra Jadeja finished with 1/50 in 9 overs. Harshit Rana finished with 0/44 in 8 overs. Tilak Varma bowled 3 overs for 29 runs. It meant India needed 271 runs to win off 50 overs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s maiden ODI ton alongside fifties from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli took India to a comprehensive win
Chasing 271 for the win, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma opened the batting for India while Marco Jansen had ball in hand for South Africa. It was all India from the get-go as they dominated from the start to finish. The openers took their time especially Jaiswal as Rohit was the aggressor of the two. They did not go for the bowling straightaway but after playing themselves in, they upped the ante.
All the bowlers were taken to the cleaners later on as India scored only 48 runs in the first 10 overs. But it was all about keeping wickets in hand. Both complimented each other really well as Jaiswal looked determined to make a big one while Rohit was comfortable in his space. Rohit was the aggressor and he got to his half-century before Jaiswal and was guiding the youngster really well. India aced and paced the chase perfectly. They switched gears as runs leaked from both ends after a while.
The 100 came up for India and of the partnership but they were not done yet and carried on and converted that to 150. The score reached 155 when against the run of play Rohit was dismissed for 75 off 73 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes to his name as Keshav Maharaj got the first breakthrough for South Africa. Virat Kohli came out to bat next and he was on the move straightaway. Virat settled himself in with no run rate pressure and then became aggressive as young Jaiswal was in nervous 90s.
Soon, Jaiswal was not to be denied and got to his maiden ODI ton. Virat changed gears very quickly after Jaiswal’s ton as India were in a hurry to finish things off in style. And boy, he did that as he raced away to 65 off 45 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes to his name. Jaiswal was unbeaten on 116 off 121 balls with 12 fours and 2 sixes to his name as he played the ramp as well after completing his ton.
India were in a hurry to finish the chase and they upped the ante and finished the game off in 39.5 overs. Jaiswal was unbeaten on 116 off 121 balls with 12 fours and 2 sixes to his name while Kohli was unbeaten on 65 off 45 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes to his name. 15 extras given by the fielding side as the target was achieved in 39.5 overs.
,Keshav Maharaj was the only South African bowler to bowl well as he finished with 1/44 in 10 overs. The rest went wicketless and for runs. Marco Jansen finished with 0/39 in 8 overs. Lungi Ngidi finished with 0/56 in 6.5 overs. Ottneil Baartman finished with 0/60 in 7 overs. Corbin Bosch went for 53 runs in 6 overs while Aiden Markram finished with 0/17 in 2 overs. So, India win by 9 wickets with 10.1 overs to spare. Yashasvi Jaiswal was awarded the Player of the Match while Virat Kohli was awarded the Player of the Series.
What Lies Ahead
The ODI leg of the tour is also done and dusted with India winning the series 2-1. Next-up is the 5-match T20I series between India and South Africa. The first T20I takes place in Cuttack on December 9th Tuesday at 7 PM IST onwards. India will be led by Suryakumar Yadav while South Africa will be led by Aiden Markram.
An exciting and intriguing series lies ahead for us and we shall wait and see which side will take the bragging rights from this series. Both teams look strong on paper.
