Marnus Labuschagne’s Incredible Performance Shocks England

Marnus Labuschagne gave another great performance on the second day of the Ashes 2025-26 Test Match while playing against a strong English bowling attack. Marnus made an excellent contribution to Australia’s second Test match by scoring 65 runs from 78 balls, including nine fours and one six. Marnus’ innings showed his usual patient style of playing as well as more aggressive shots. Marnus (estimated) has a superb batting record of over 60 runs per match in pink ball Tests when he entered the field with his bat. Therefore, he was able to give a lot of much-needed support to the team. Unfortunately, he was dismissed by Ben Stokes very shortly after reaching his 25th Test half-century.

Marnus Labuschagne Scoring Areas

Marnus scored well in the square region, dominating that area whenever the opposition’s bowlers went wrong with their line or length.

His ability to punish short balls down the leg side was evident in the way he pulled Jofra Archer for a huge six and got some quick fours from Brydon Carse and Stokes from short balls. The boundary for his ton was also a top-edged pull shot that carried well over the keeper.

He produced some truly elegant drives and cuts as the seamers overpitched or bowled wide. His first boundary was a terrific cut through gully from a ball delivered by Carse, and his following boundary was a brilliant drive through extra cover. He also secured some easy runs through the cover-point area.

Ben Stokes overpitched several of his deliveries, but Labuschagne took full advantage of that miscalculation with a powerful on-drive.

Marnus Labuschagne Vs English Bowlers

Jofra Archer: It was Jofra Archer that raised the standards, with an “unplayable” leg-cutter (33.1), and beating the edge of the bat on two occasions (33.2, 23.1). However, Marnus Labuschagne clearly wasn’t fazed by Archer’s pace, and played beautifully to create a spectacular pulled-six (31.6) from Archer’s leg side stray ball (33.3).

Brydon Carse: Brydon Carse has been quite expensive, and Marnus seized the opportunities Carse presented to him. After a careful start, Marnus bowled him for four consecutive boundaries (15.6, 17.5, 17.6, 36.1) and progressed quickly towards his fifty.

Ben Stokes: Stokes tried to stop runs and build pressure on Marnus Labuschagne with a lot of back-of-a-length bowling. Marnus found ways to score off him with a straight drive for 4 runs (16.5), and also punished his short pitch delivery (35.1). In the end, however, Stokes had the last laugh; his short-of-a-length delivery got Labuschagne to play through to the slips (37.1) to end the innings.

Will Jacks: Marnus Labuschagne showed he was eager to attack the spin bowler Will Jacks and managed to take advantage of a fuller delivery and create a full toss off Jacks’ delivery using his feet, and then drove it straight back past the bowler’s diving attempt for four runs (19.5).

Partnership

Labuschagne and Weatherald achieved a 69-run partnership, which was the second 50+ stand for Australia at this point in the innings (Labuschagne also had a previous partnership of 50 with Steve Smith). The partnership helped to stabilize and get the Australian team back on track after losing their first early wicket of the day. Most of Labuschagne’s quick scoring, including his first several boundaries, occurred during the Labuschagne-Waterford partnership.

Labuschagne also had a 50-run partnership with Steve Smith prior to this effort. This partnership proved critical to building a solid base upon which they could defend against opposing team pressure, setting a strong foundation for the future performance of the middle order. The partnership had a 50-run mark at 36.4, which was the direct outcome of both of their efforts to play good defensive cricket and intelligent strike rotation. Additionally, Labuschagne’s partnership contributions are underscored by the fact that “all their partnerships during this innings thus far have been of 50 runs or greater.”
