The stage is set for the Netherlands to make their first appearance in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. They have worked extremely hard in reaching this stage and would like to create some flutters in the group that they are in. It won’t be an easy task for them, but the Dutch have nothing to lose and everything to gain from this tournament. They will have a lot to learn from this tournament. Babette de Leede will lead this Dutch side.
The squad has a mix of youth and experience and will look to do wonders in this tournament. In this piece, we will critically analyse the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of Team Netherlands.
Strengths
- Babette de Leede’s leadership and all-round quality: Babette de Leede is the cornerstone of Dutch women’s cricket, contributing with the bat, gloves and leadership. Her experience against stronger opposition gives the Netherlands a reliable match-winner in pressure situations.
- Strong team cohesion: Much of the squad has progressed together through the European and Global Qualifiers. The side has developed a clear identity built around discipline, fielding standards and collective performances rather than individual stars.
- Experienced core: Players such as Sterre Kalis, Heather Siegers, Robine Rijke, and de Leede provide valuable experience. Several squad members have played domestic cricket in stronger cricketing environments, aiding their development.
- Momentum from qualification: The Dutch women qualified for their first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup by producing a series of impressive performances in the Global Qualifier. That achievement has generated confidence and belief within the squad.
Weaknesses
- Lack of experience at major tournaments: Unlike most teams in their group, the Netherlands have never played at a Women’s T20 World Cup before. Handling the pressure of global tournaments remains an unknown.
- Limited batting firepower: The Dutch batting line-up can sometimes struggle to maintain a high scoring rate against elite bowling attacks. They often rely heavily on a handful of key batters for substantial contributions.
- Depth Concerns: Compared to Full Member nations, the Netherlands lack the same level of depth in both the batting and the bowling. Injuries and loss of form among senior players could significantly weaken the side.
- Lower exposure to top-level competition: Ranked outside the top tier of women’s cricket, the Dutch women play fewer matches against elite opposition.
Opportunities
- Nothing-to-lose mentality: As tournament debutants, expectations are relatively low. This allows them to play with freedom and potentially unsettle more fancied opponents.
- Favourable Conditions: English conditions are likely to be more familiar than subcontinental conditions, especially for seam bowlers and disciplined batting units. Their preparations included matches in Scotland and the UK before the tournament.
- Targeting fellow mid-tier sides: Matches against Bangladesh and Pakistan could provide realistic opportunities to secure historic World Cup victories. Even one upset could significantly alter the group standings.
- Growing the game in the Netherlands: A competitive showing could accelerate investment and participation in Dutch women’s cricket. The World Cup offers a platform to showcase the progress of the programme.
Threats
- Extremely difficult group: Australia, India and South Africa are among the strongest teams in world cricket. The Netherlands could find itself under intense pressure in most matches.
- Dependence on key players: Opponents will focus heavily on containing Babette de Leede and Sterre Kalis. A lack of contributions from supporting players could expose the team’s limitations.
- Quality gap against elite nations: The difference in professional infrastructure, domestic competitions and player depth remains substantial. Sustaining performance across multiple games will be challenging.
- Inconsistent recent results: Warm-up matches highlighted the challenge of competing consistently against stronger opponents, including a heavy defeat to Scotland before the tournament.

Expected Outcome for the Netherlands in The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026
Netherlands are placed in Group 1 alongside Australia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and South Africa. The Dutch have played two warm-up games and lost both of them. One to Scotland by 58 runs and another to Sri Lanka by 7 wickets. They start their tournament proper against Bangladesh on 14th June at 3 PM IST. They next face India on 17th June at 7 PM IST. They next face the powerhouses Australia on 20th June at 3 PM IST.
After that, they face South Africa on 25th June at 11 PM IST. They play their last league game against Pakistan on 27th June at 3 PM IST. It is the Dutch’s first tournament appearance. They should go out there with a ” nothing to lose mentality. Realistically speaking, they are likely to go winless in the campaign as all teams are higher ranked and stronger than them. So, a group stage exit is the most viable option.
But if they can get even one win, it will be an upset and an achievement for them. They will have to play out of their skins to even get a solitary win. But they will have a lot to learn from this tournament, for sure, we can say. Let’s see how the Dutch perform in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
