ICC Women’s T20 WC 2026: India Aims To Win Maiden Crown

Fresh off winning their maiden ODI World Cup in October/November in 2025, the Women in Blue would like to create history by winning the T20 World Cup, but it will be easier said than done. India lifted the ODI World Cup in front of their home crowd in Navi Mumbai, but for this event, they will have to do so in foreign shores in England. Things won’t be straightforward, as there are other teams vying to win as well.

Led by Harmanpreet Kaur and coached by Amol Mazumdar, India has a well-oiled machine and has a mixture of youth and experience. They have their strengths and weaknesses as well. All teams do; India is no different. Here, we will try to analyse Team India and talk about their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for Team India.

Strengths

  1. Experienced Core of Match Winners: India possesses one of the most experienced squads in world cricket, led by Harmanpreet Kaur. The team also relies heavily on proven performers such as Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, and Shafali Verma. This core has played together for years and understands the pressures of global tournaments.
  2. Strong Batting Depth: India’s batting unit is among the most versatile in the competition. The recent England tour showcased contributions from multiple batters, including Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur and Yastika Bhatia. India successfully posted and chased competitive totals in English conditions, demonstrating their adaptability to the conditions.
  3. Quality Spin All Rounders: Deepti Sharma remains one of the world’s premier T20 all-rounders. Alongside emerging spin options, India can control the middle overs effectively, which is going to be a crucial factor in T20 cricket and in conditions over there.
  4. Recent Exposures to English Conditions: India entered the World Cup after a high-profile white-ball tour of England. Although they lost the T20I series 2-1, the experience provides valuable knowledge of venues, pitches and weather conditions ahead of the tournament. This could be a crucial advantage to India compared to the other teams in the competition.

Weaknesses

  1. Over-Reliance on Top Order: India’s batting remains heavily dependent on Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, and Harmanpreet Kaur. When early wickets fall, the middle order can come under significant pressure. This can hamper India in a big way in a big tournament.
  2. Death Bowling Concerns: India has often struggled to contain runs in the final overs against elite batting line-ups. This issue becomes even more pronounced on smaller English grounds where boundaries come quickly.
  3. Inconsistency Against Top Teams: While India regularly defeats the lower-ranked sides, converting strong performances into victories against teams like the Australia Women’s Cricket Team and England Women’s Cricket Team in knockout situations remains a challenge for the Women in Blue.
  4. Fielding Under Pressure: Dropped catches and missed run-out opportunities have occasionally cost India crucial matches in ICC events. Improving fielding standards could significantly impact their title chances. The fielding will be a crucial aspect for Team India going ahead as well.

Opportunities

  1. England Conditions Suit India’s New Ball Bowlers: Swing-friendly conditions can help India’s seam attack make early breakthroughs, especially against aggressive batting sides. This can help India make early inroads in the big games.
  2. Emergence of Young Talent: India has added greater depth through the domestic system and franchise cricket. Young players now have more experience of high-pressure matches than previous generations.
  3. First ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Title: India has reached major ICC finals before, are still searching for their maiden Women’s T20 World Cup crown. The motivation to achieve a historic breakthrough could be a major driving force. It gives an opportunity for India to shine bright on the big stage.
  4. Balanced Squad Composition: India possesses a good blend of power hitters, accumulators, seamers and spin-bowling all-rounders, giving them flexibility across different conditions. An opportunity to shine on the biggest stage with this balanced squad is a massive opportunity.

Threats

  1. Australia Remain the Benchmark: Australia Women’s Cricket Team continue to possess the deepest squad and strongest tournament pedigree, making them India’s biggest obstacle. Getting past Australia will be a big hurdle for the Women in Blue and something they need to be up for.
  2. Home Advantage for England: England has regained momentum before the World Cup and recently defeated India in a T20I series. With Nat Sciver-Brunt fit for the tournament, England will be formidable in home conditions against India.
  3. Knockout Pressure: India’s recent ICC history has shown that handling semi-final and final pressure remains a hurdle. One poor performance can end what could be an excellent campaign for India, and that remains a threat for them.
  4. Weather and Scheduling: English weather can produce unpredictable playing conditions, increasing the importance of squad adaptability and squad depth. This will be tested and can be a massive threat as well.

India 15-Member Squad for T20 Women’s World Cup 2026

Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Smriti Mandhana (vc), Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Bharti Fulmali, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, Yastika Bhatia, Shree Charani, Nandani Sharma, Arundhati Reddy, Renuka Thakur, Kranti Gaud, Shreyanka Patil, Radha Yadav.

Expected Performance from India in T20 Women’s World Cup 2026

India is in a tough group that contains heavyweights Australia, South Africa and arch-rivals Pakistan as well. Also, in their group are Bangladesh and the Netherlands. India has two warm-up games in Cardiff against the West Indies and England from the other group on June 8th and June 10th.

They start their World Cup campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 14th in Edgbaston before locking horns with the Netherlands on 17th June. They will then take on South Africa on 21st June before taking on Bangladesh on 25th June. Their last group stage game is against mighty Australia on 28th June.

Looking at the groups and current form where they lost to South Africa in South Africa 1-4 and to England in England 1-2, it will be safe to say India have their work cut out. They are in a group of death if we may so say. So, to make it to the semis will be an achievement, which is what we feel. If they make it to the semis, then one of Australia or South Africa misses the semis bus. That is how competitive this group is. India will do well to reach the semis, but a group stage exit cannot be ruled out either. It is a long shot to win the tournament.

Let’s see how India shapes up and performs in the 2026 Women’s World Cup.
