Mohammed Siraj gave a fitting send-off to Travis Head after his blistering knock of 140 which changed the course of the test match. Mohammed Siraj bowled an inch-perfect yorker to the set Travis Head who was looking unstoppable. Mohammed Siraj was looking in supreme touch and it wasn’t easy to get him out before Siraj did.
Ricky Ponting, a former Australian captain, shared his thoughts on the verbal altercation between Travis Head and Mohammed Siraj during the second Test match in Adelaide. Ponting indicated that because match referees and umpires dislike send-offs, he knew Siraj was in trouble.
The right-arm speedster was pumped up after dismissing the left-handed hitter, and Head hit two boundaries in the over with Siraj. He pointed to the dugout and offered Head a stern farewell as a result. The ICC docked both players penalty points for their altercation on the field.
“As Soon As I Saw The Send-Off, I Actually Got Worried For Mohammed Siraj” – Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting mentioned that it was not a big deal until he saw Mohammed Siraj giving a send-off to Travis Head. He said :
“Look, it wasn’t that big a deal. I was in comms (commentary box) at the time. As soon as I saw the send-off, I actually got worried for Siraj. I know how the umpires react to those things. Umpires and referees don’t like seeing the send-off, pointed in the direction of the dressing room.”
The Hyderabad-born cricketer disputed with Head’s assertion that all he told Siraj was “well bowled” following play on Day 2. He claimed that the South Australian had verbally insulted him and was lying. On Day 3, however, it was observed that the two players were conversing in a reasonably friendly manner.
Ponting added that it appeared like there had been a misunderstanding throughout the entire incident. He does not, however, anticipate that Rohit Sharma, the visiting captain, will advise Siraj to be less aggressive going forward.
“Looking back at it now, I think it was accidental the way that whole thing played out. I don’t think there was any malice meant at the start. I know Travis has gone and said that he said ‘well bowled’ at the start. Siraj obviously wasn’t happy about being hit over the deep backward square for six the ball before. Rohit (Sharma) I’m sure would expect these fast bowlers to react like that. When they’re under the pressure and they’re getting hit and then they’ve just got a wicket you’d expect that they’d be up and about,” the 49-year-old said (as per the aforementioned source).
After Australia’s victory in Adelaide tied the series, the two teams will travel to Brisbane for the third Test, which begins on December 14.
