ENG vs NZ: ECB’s Drastic U-Turn On Brendon McCullum, Ben Stokes & Co

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has somewhat shaken English fans by retaining the core of the England coaching staff. ECB were humbled in Australia by the Ashes defeat of 1-4. ECB did a complete, thorough review of how Brendon McCullum & Ben Stokes‘ brigade fared on & off the field after the drinking bar brawl incident involving Harry Brook in New Zealand during the ODI series.

Moving people on can sometimes be the easiest thing to do- ECB chief Richard Gould

ECB chief Richard Gould was having an interaction with the media. Richard Gould clearly mentioned that this is not a proper route to retain the players, but he believed that this is the right route. Richard Gould said now the team needs to adapt and the defeats will take the team forward.

“Moving people on can sometimes be the easy thing to do. That’s not the route that we’re going to take. I’ve seen the driving ambition and determination that we’re lucky enough to have within our leadership group to take the lessons from the Ashes and move on forward… It may not be the popular route. It may not be the easiest route. But I think it’s the right route,” said Richard Gould.

“We have seen that there are ways that we can do things in a different way and ensure that we’ve got more options. We don’t want to be painted into a corner by being perceived that we can only do things in one particular way… There is the belief that we can adapt, and I think we’ve seen good evidence of that and we will continue to drive that forward,” he added.

Complicated philosophy of the ECB

The ideology of Bazball has been successful, but they haven’t been able to win in India, Pakistan & Australia. Under the reins of Brendon McCullum & Ben Stokes, England have won 21 matches out of 34, but out of those, 6 defeats have been in India in 2024, where they lost 4 & in Pakistan, they lost 2 matches. England also didn’t win the Ashes 2023 as it was squared by 2-2 with the Aussies retaining the Urn.

There was a Nossa trip as well in the middle of the Ashes for England players to get some space & peace, which resulted in some players getting drunk. England also didn’t play a single warm-up match in the Ashes, which raises eyebrows. Harry Brook openly said that in one of his press conferences that players are allowed to have a drink whenever they want, which sounds like they can have a glass of water.

ICC WTC 2025-27 in danger for England

England already languishes in 7th position of the ICC WTC 2025-27 points table with a percentile of 31.67. Britain have won 3 matches out of 10. England are scheduled to play 11 Test matches in the latter half of the cycle: 3 a piece against New Zealand (home), Proteas (away), Pakistan(home) & 2 Tests against Bangladesh in 2027. England has to win all 11 Test matches to give themselves some sort of chance to qualify for the WTC final, which also doesn’t guarantee.

Since the inception of ICC WTC in 2019-21 edition, England haven’t reached the finals, not even once. The final of all the ICC WTC editions has been played in England, but the creators of the game have been missing in those finals. It raises a question whether England really prioritizes the ICC WTC or just the Ashes, which have been very vocal but no Ashes series victory since 2015 as well.

Uphill task for England

Undoubtedly, the road is a steep one for Baz, Ben Stokes & Key who have experienced nadir as well as pinnacle. English fans now want results and ICC trophies; the next 16-18 months would be very exhilarating for England. ‘Bazball’ has given entertainment and so-called revolutionized cricket, but without any accolades & silverware, any revolution won’t get etched in the history of books easily. England haven’t won an ICC tournament since the 2022 T20 WC, & the main aim would be the ODI WC 2027, which is the end of Baz’s tenure

There seems to be a brilliant camaraderie amongst the coaching staff & players, perhaps this can be the drastic turning point of England cricket. Backing the same players & coaching staff even after repeated failures is a bold step, but they know their mistakes very well; ECB has that only ray of hope that everyone in the setup would be aware of their wrongdoings & not commit them again knowingly or unknowingly, as this is a risky approach, we can say.
