Mohammad Kaif lauds Shubman Gill for his gritty 103 in the drawn 4th Test
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif was impressed with Shubman Gill’s attitude on the field against England in Manchester. Kaif asserted that the young Indian skipper didn’t impersonate Virat Kohli at Old Trafford after facing criticism for his antics at Lord’s. The 25-year-old looked calm and composed as skipper in the fourth Test and played a pivotal role in his team forcing a draw with a century in the fourth innings. The draw kept India alive in the series as they will now shift focus to the Oval to finish the series 2-2.
The cricketer-turned-commentator credited 25-year-old for his innings filled with preserveranceas he faced 238 deliveries for a fighting 103-run knock in the second innings, comprising 12 boundaries. During his knock, Shubman Gill shared a crucial 188 runs partnership with KL Rahul (90) for the third wicket after the tourists were reeling at 0/2 in the second innings.
The duo lasted three out of five sessions before all-rounders Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja stepped up in the last two sessions, scoring individual centuries to save the game for India. Mohammad Kaif was highly impressed with Shubman’s calm demeanour in Manchester, which he also feels was reflected when he was batting in the middle. The Indian skipper was criticised for his over-aggressive attitude on the field at Lord’s, with many saying that he was trying to copy Virat Kohli.
On Monday, July 28 , Mohammad Kaif said on his Youtube channel :
“In this Test, you must have seen that whenever the camera zoomed in on him, he was calm. He realised his mistake of trying to impersonate Virat Kohli… He realised his calm nature, and it transpired in his batting. He showed that he has temperament”.
The Indian skipper Shubman Gill displayed immense grit and determination on the last two days with the bat and scored 103, which set up the foundation for a draw, which looked highly unlikely on Day 4 when India lost wickets for nought on the scoreboard. Despite Shubman Gill falling for 103 on the stroke of lunch during day five’s play in the ongoing fourth Test against England.
Shubman Gill had come out to bat on a hat-trick ball in the first over of India’s second innings on day four, but stood up with his patience and gritty nature hit 103 off 238 balls, laced with 12 boundaries. It was his ninth Test hundred and fourth of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series.
He has now tied with legendary batters Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar for most centuries as captain in a Test series, whilst also becoming the first player to hit four hundreds in their debut Test series as captain. The knock of 103 also marked the first time that Shubman Gill took more than 200 balls to score a Test century.
