The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have endured a mixed bag campaign in IPL 2026. The Men in Yellow did not start the tournament too promisingly, but have picked up speed amidst all their struggles and fitness issues to remain in contention for a playoff spot, albeit with slim chances. But we know when CSK picks up steam and form, other teams need to take it seriously. So, they will be a threat to the other teams for sure, provided they can keep the consistency going. It’s a young side that is punching above its weight so far.
Chennai were dealt a blow at the start of the tournament with Nathan Ellis ruled out due to injury. His replacement, Spencer Johnson, arrived a few days ago. Their legendary player, the man whom they call THALA, MS Dhoni, has not even started to play despite being initially ruled out for two weeks. Now, whether he plays or not, remains to be seen. Khaleel Ahmed was injured during play, and several replacement players arrived. Despite that, Chennai have managed to keep themselves relevant to stay in the hunt, but have work to do.
The Journey So Far
CSK started their IPL 2026 campaign in Guwahati against the Rajasthan Royals and were thrashed in all facets of the game by the Men in Pink. Then they faced PBKS in Chennai and, despite scoring 209 on the board, that total was easily chased down as Prabhsimran Singh and captain Shreyas Iyer fired to take the Kings over the line quite comfortably. Chennai Super Kings next went to Bengaluru to face RCB, and the Challengers, after a slow start, recovered through Tim David’s onslaught, and Rajat Patidar and Devdutt Padikkal’s contributions made 254 on the board.
Chennai Super Kings struggled in the chase but somehow managed to reach 207 to reduce the margin of defeat, but it was 3 matches and 3 losses, and things looked down and out for CSK. But they say, champions always find a way, and CSK next hosted DC in Chennai and thanks to a Sanju Samson masterful ton, they posted 213. DC faltered in the chase despite Tristan Stubbs’ heroics and fell short by 23 runs. CSK made it back-to-back wins as they beat KKR next. They posted 192 on the board, but an inspired bowling display saw them restrict KKR and win the contest by 30 runs.
CSK were given a reality check when they faced the Orange Army SRH, where SRH were quickly off the blocks, but CSK did well to keep them down to 193. But the batting faltered under pressure in a 180+ chase as they lost by 10 runs. It was back to the drawing board for CSK. Thereafter, they faced MI in Mumbai, and thanks to a Sanju Samson masterclass where he made an unbeaten hundred, CSK posted 207. Then Akeal Hosein stood up and got 4 wickets while Noor Ahmad got 2 wickets. The others chipped in as MI were shut out for 104 as CSK won by 103 runs.
CSK next faced GT in Chennai and faltered with the bat. A patient Ruturaj Gaikwad 50 took the score to 158/7, but that was never going to be enough as GT chased it down inside 17 overs to win by 8 wickets. CSK then had a gap of a week before they faced MI last night in Chennai. The Men in Yellow outplayed MI in all facets of the game as a disciplined bowling display helped CSK restrict MI to 159/7. Thereafter, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma’s 98-run third-wicket stand helped CSK get over the line in 18.1 overs.
So, CSK has had a mixed run, but they are slowly picking up their pace, which could be a worry for the other teams facing or watching them.
The Journey Ahead for CSK from here
CSK have played 9 games, winning 4 and losing 5 games. They have 5 more games left where the Men in Yellow have to win at least 4 to get to 16 points, which is usually enough for a playoff spot. But it won’t be straightforward for the Men in Yellow. If we look at their remaining fixtures, they next have to face DC in New Delhi on Tuesday night. That will be a huge game as DC are on a similar boat as CSK with 3 wins in 9 games. CSK ahead of DC on NRR at this stage. So, this could be a winner-takes-all do-or-die game for both teams, i.e. DC and CSK on 5th May at Delhi.
After this clash, CSK will face LSG twice back-to-back. One away (10th May) and the other one home (15th May). Looking at LSG’s performance, CSK will be quietly confident and hope they can win both their games against LSG. After the LSG games, CSK will host SRH (18th May) in Chennai before travelling to Ahmedabad to face GT in the last league game. The road to the playoffs looks a tad difficult.
From CSK’s point of view, they will ideally want to win in New Delhi and complete the double over them and then try and win both the LSG games. It is easier said than done. But if things fall into place, and CSK gets to 14 points with 2 league games to play, then maybe they may find a way to beat either of SRH or GT, if not both, to move ahead in the tournament.
But the next three games will be critical. Faltering in any one could be detrimental to CSK. But the other teams will watch out, take note and know that CSK cannot be taken lightly, and they have shown promise. We have to wait and see what they do from here.
But other teams will take note, even those who are not going to face them and know that in case CSK makes it to the playoffs, it will be tough for the others since they have been there, done that. Let’s wait and see how CSK performs in the upcoming games.
