Asia Cup 2025: 3 Reasons For Oman’s Crushing Loss To Pakistan

Oman fell to a crushing 93-run defeat against fancied Pakistan side at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. Oman who are playing in their maiden Asia Cup main round had their moments especially with ball in hand when they came back to restrict Pakistan to 160/7. But their batting crumbled under pressure post powerplay and caved in to lose by a heavy margin. We will try and list out three reasons for their loss to Pakistan.

Dropped catch and fielding in general led Oman down

Oman lost the toss and were told to field first. They started well by getting rid of Saim Ayub for a golden duck. It could have been so much better had in the second over Aamir Kaleem taken the catch. Sahibzada Farhan was on 2 at that time and hit Shakeel Ahmed to cover point region where Kaleem dropped a sitter. Farhan may have made only 29 off 29 balls but that dropped catch allowed the partnership of Haris and Farhan to flourish.

The duo put on 85 for the second wicket and had the catch being taken Pakistan would have been 2 down inside powerplay and may have felt the pinch. But unfortunately, the catching here let them down. Though Oman showed fight and came back with the ball, it was going to be a tough chase against a quality bowling line-up filled with spinners. The ground fielding was also tardy as they let a lot of runs through and needs to improve going forward.

Ground fielding and catching are something which is within one’s control. If Oman are to improve and compete against higher ranked nations, they need to field a lot better, take all their catches as catches win matches as the old saying goes. Their next game is against UAE and it will be interesting to see how both teams approach that game after getting thrashings from India and Pakistan respectively. Oman has the potential, and needs to get these little things right.

Losing 8/27 post the powerplay in 10.4 overs seals the fate for Oman

After keeping Pakistan down to 160, Oman began decently in the powerplay as they scored 40 runs and lost 2 wickets. Yes, they did lose two wickets but had a base to make a match out of this situation. But post powerplay, Oman collapsed in a heap much like UAE did against India a few nights ago. It was dejavu as the lower ranked sides caved under pressure in the middle overs. For the record, UAE were 41/2 in 6 overs against India before they collapsed.

It is just that Oman played a few more overs and scored 10 more runs than UAE but the pattern was the same with the spinners doing the bulk of the damage. Pakistan had three proper spinners and Saim Ayub bowling as well and they spun a web around Oman batters. The Oman batters were helpless and had no clue how to handle the bowling. Pakistan had a field day with Faheem Ashraf also getting into the wickets column as everyone chipped in. It showed a big gulf between the two nations.

Going forward, it will be interesting to see how Oman recovers from this batting performance against UAE who too put in a disappointing show against India. Both teams who are battered and bruised will be up against each other soon. But Oman for their part first needs to forget this batting display and also get learnings from the performance in order to become a better side. It was their maiden clash in Asia Cup history, and while they were good with the ball they had a forgettable outing with the bat.

Inability to stop Mohammad Haris and playing spin hurt Oman a lot

Mohammad Haris put on a show against Oman as he needed runs badly. Promoted to Number 3, Haris made a brilliant 66 off 43 balls and did it by playing proper cricketing shots and innovating at times. He looked largely untroubled at the crease and took on the bowling with aplomb. It seemed Oman had gone short of ideas and didn’t have the right arsenal to stop him. They did not have different planning against different batters and that hurt them a bit.

Pakistan’s strategy was spin to win and it worked wonders for them against hapless Oman. They had 4 spin bowling options with Salman Ali Agha deciding not to bowl himself. But the four of them bowled really well yesterday and shone through picking up 6 wickets between them. Saim Ayub picked up 2 wickets, Abrar Ahmed and Mohammad Nawaz picked up 1 each while Sufiyan Muqeem picked up 2 wickets. Variety in spin attack worked wonders for Pakistan as Oman struggled and were clueless against the spin bowling.

Looking ahead, Oman needs to work on how to play against the spinners and have better plans against opposition batters. They need to be incisive in their approach and try and look for wickets when having ball in hand. With bat, they would want to show more intent out there as that will help them putting a better performance against other oppositions. They have the potential like we mentioned but have a long way to go to come up to the elite level yet.

What Lies Ahead.

After another one-sided game in Asia Cup 2025, the bandwagon moves back to Abu Dhabi from Dubai. The Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium is set to host a Group B clash as Bangladesh will square off against 6-time winners Sri Lanka at 8 PM IST on 13th September 2025. It is our first look at Sri Lanka in this campaign while Bangladesh are coming off an impressive win against the Netherlands. They will want to win and make it 2 wins out of 2.

Who shall prevail in this battle of Asian Giants and for a change in a battle of equals? We shall find out the answer to that question later tonight as it is difficult to chose a favourite at this stage.
