Hong Kong crashed to a convincing 94-run defeat at the hands of Afghanistan at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Hong Kong who have been winless in Asia Cup history continued their downward spiral despite being good in patches. They troubled Afghanistan with ball in hand and kept them under check for a while, but they couldn’t capitalize on it and go on with it. They were not consistent enough. While Afghanistan got out of tight holes, Hong Kong would think what might have been. We will list three key reasons where Hong Kong lost last night.
Multiple dropped catches of Sediqullah Atal and Azmatullah Omarzai cost Hong Kong dear
Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat first. Hong Kong started well as they got rid of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran early in the powerplay. But it could have been so much better for Hong Kong if they were not sloppy in the field. Sediqullah Atal was batting on 4 and it was the first over of the match. Ayush Shukla was the bowler and managed to find the outside edge which was dropped by Yasim Murtaza at slips which was a sitter.
Atal made Afghanistan pay big time by converting that lifeline and scoring a half-century and eventually carried his bat. That’s not all, through the course of the innings Atal was dropped two more times with Ehsan Khan dropping him at short third. With 3 lives, he made an unbeaten 73 and carried his bat. Azmatullah Omarzai was settling into his innings when he was dropped at long-off off Ehsan Khan and after that he cut loose scoring a 20-ball fifty. He was on 24 when he was dropped and went onto score 53 off 21 balls.
Hong Kong dropped 4 catches and that was devastating for them. Even Afghanistan later dropped catches but it did not prove costly for them. Catches win matches as is the old saying and Hong Kong needs to improve their catching if they want to challenge higher ranked sides. They have Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to come and have to improve their fielding by leaps and bounds to be competitive in those games. One cannot give reprieves to quality players.
Conceding 78 runs in the last 5 overs deflates Hong Kong
Despite all the dropped catches, Hong Kong had the measure of Afghanistan for the first 15 overs of the first innings, as the score was 110/4 in 15 overs. But Azmatullah Omarzai went berserk in the death overs and Atal too switched gears a bit as some massive overs came from the Hong Kong bowling. They were not helped in the field but they lost the plot with the ball too.
Too many length deliveries and slot balls were bowled and the two set batters climbed onto him big time. Overs exceeding 20 runs were scored as Afghanistan plundered 78 runs in the last five overs to go with the momentum at the interval. After 15 overs, Afghanistan looked as it they would have to settle for 160 kind of score, but the last 5 overs thanks to Omarzai brilliance took them to an above par score something the bowlers could easily defend.
The key to success is being consistent for longer periods of time and while Hong Kong had their moments they lost the plot at the wrong time and allowed Afghanistan to get off the hook. Once 180 was scored, we all knew it’s going to be very difficult for Hong Kong and it proved that way. Going forward, Hong Kong needs to get their death bowling sorted as well to challenge and be more competitive against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Losing 4 wickets for 23 runs in the powerplay sealed the fate of Hong Kong
Chasing 189 for the win, Hong Kong would have hoped for a solid start to at least make a match out of it. But Afghanistan had momentum with them and charged in from all corners. Hong Kong got off to the worst possible start as Anshuman Rath was adjudged caught behind off Farooqi. Although replays suggested there was no bat, but the batter walked without reviewing it. Zeeshan Ali next fell to Omarzai. Nizakat Khan and Kalhan Marc Challu fell to run outs as Afghanistan who were sloppy with dropped catches got two run outs in the powerplay.
Hong Kong were reduced to 22/4 inside 5 overs and the powerplay score was 23/4 chasing 189 for the win as the game was sealed here itself. Hong Kong never really recovered from this disastrous start and in the middle and death overs as well crawled their way through. They decided to play full 20 overs and posted only 94/9 to lose by 94 runs. They never looked like going for the target after the powerplay overs. It was all Afghanistan and a bit of a snooze fest towards the end.
Going forward, Hong Kong will be aiming to be more competitive and give a good account of themselves in the remaining two fixtures. While they were decent with the ball till 15 overs, with the bat they were nowhere in the contest. They need to apply better and bat a lot better in the powerplay in order to be successful. Losing 4 wickets and 2 of them through run outs just summed up their day in the office. They need to do a lot better than last night.
