In the day’s second game of the day at the same venue, Southampton we have another Group B clash as hosts England lock horns with Ireland. Two teams with contrasting fortunes and form comes into this clash. England thrashed Sri Lanka in their opening contest while Ireland went down tamely to Scotland. For England, it will be about continuing the winning momentum while Ireland will aim to spring a surprise.
England is being led by talisman skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt while Gaby Lewis leads the Irish side. Ireland have capable players and one that can stun England on their day. But on paper, it looks a lop-sided contest at this stage. The stage is set for an interesting battle between the neighbours.
Overview.Â
The stage is set for the second game in Tuesday’s double-header, with neighbours England and Ireland locking horns against one another in another Group B clash at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. England sit atop Group B after a crushing win over Sri Lanka in their campaign opener. The hosts were clinical in all three departments and outclassed the opposition from the start to the finish.
After being asked to bat first, Danni Wyatt-Hodge led the charge with a scintillating unbeaten century. She finished on 105 not out, while her opening partner Amy Jones struck a half-century as the pair put on 135 runs for the opening wicket. Jones departed for 53, but skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt ensured the momentum did not dip. She smashed 46 off just 22 balls to propel England to 219/1 in 20 overs- the highest total in Women’s T20 World Cup history.
In reply, Freya Kemp was the standout bowler, returning figures of 4/22. Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone picked up two wickets apiece, while Lauren Bell and Linsey Smith chipped in with one each.
On the other hand, Ireland endured a rough start to their campaign as they went down to Scotland. Bowling first in Manchester, Ireland conceded 161/5 in 20 overs. Ava Cunning was the pick of the bowlers, returning with figures of 3/27 from her 4 overs. Aimee Maguire and Arlene Kelly picked up a wicket apiece.
With the bat, only Amy Hunter (39) and Orla Prendergast (33) got starts but failed to convert them into substantial scores. Ireland lost wickets at regular intervals, with no other batter able to make a significant contribution, and were eventually bowled out for 121 in 19.1 overs.
The stage is set and it remains to be seen whether Ireland can bounce back and stun England on the biggest stage? Or whether England continues their dominance and march forward in this tournament. We shall find that out later tonight.
Head-To-Head.Â
England and Ireland have played a total of 4 games against each other with England leading it 3-1. This is their first meeting in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. They last met in 2024 on 15th September when Ireland stunned them by chasing down 170 with a ball to spare and 5 wickets in hand.
Pitch & Weather Report.Â
The pitch at Southampton will have an even bounce and a fast outfield, but morning moisture and cloud cover can bring pacers into the game during the power play. Spinners generally find good grip as the game progresses. The par score is expected to hover between 145-160, as morning or evening conditions and Ireland’s bowling depth keep run-scoring in the power play challenging with an average of just over 7 runs per over. Teams might be tempted to chase under lights, but setting a competitive total to apply scoreboard pressure remains highly effective.
The weather at Southampton will have a mild temperature of 16 degrees Celsius. It is going to be mostly cloudy with some clear skies and a low percentage chance of rain. The humidity will be 76% that will aid swing bowling in the opening overs which will be supported by a gentle breeze.
Predicted/Probable Playing XIs of both sides.Â
Here, we will try and predict the probable playing XIs of both sides.
England XI: Danielle Nicole Wyatt-Hodge, Amy Jones (wk), Nat Sciver-Brunt (c), Alice Capsey, Heather Knight, Freya Kemp, Danielle Gibson, Charlie Dean, Sophie Ecclestone, Linsey Smith, Lauren Bell.
Ireland XI: Amy Hunter (wk), Alana Dalzell, Gaby Lewis (c), Orla Prendergast, Rebecca Stokell, Leah Paul, Alice Tector, Arlene Kelly, Ava Canning, Cara Murray, Aimee Maguire.
Key Players to watch out for in this clash.Â
Nat Sciver-Brunt: The captain of the side Nat Sciver-Brunt is a key player for England. She bats at 3, and is the one who is the fulcrum or linkage between the top and middle over. While the openers are in blistering form, we feel Brunt will be the key in this clash and must play a significant knock later tonight to help her side win the contest. If the captain gets going, England will be hard to stop.
Lauren Bell: The spearhead of the England pace bowling group and one of the improved cricketers going along in the circuit, Lauren Bell will be a key figure for England. She takes the new ball and will be expected to take early wickets and then if needed can come back later and pick up more wickets. She is a gun bowler and England looks up to her to deliver the goods for her side.
Orla Prendergast: All-rounder Orla Prendergast is a key figure for the Irish women side. She not only does job with the ball, but is a handy batter down the order. She has become one of the improved cricketers for Ireland and would love to shine in this World Cup. If Orla has a good time of things, they could make life a little tricky for the England team.
Gaby Lewis: The captain of Ireland and a key figure for Ireland in this line-up. Lewis is a top order batter slated to bat at 3. She is the key as she is expected to score the bulk of the runs. If Lewis can get off to a start and score a significant amount of runs, then only we can expect Ireland to compete against England. Otherwise, that will not be the case.
Key Stats and Records to look out for ahead of this clash.Â
- England have played Ireland once before at the Women’s T20 World Cup, winning a low-scoring match in Paarl in 2023 by 4 wickets.
- Danni Wyatt-Hodge holds an impressive record in Southampton, scoring 1052 runs in 36 T20 innings at an average of 30.94 and a strike-rate of 142.93.
- Teams batting first have won seven of the 12 games at the Rose Bowl, Southampton since the start of 2025.
Predicted/Probable Outcome of the Match.Â
It is generally tough to predict a winner in T20 cricket no matter who is playing whom. But coming to this particular contest, it is a no-brainer to say that England are overwhelming favourites as the hosts should stream roll Ireland to make it 2 wins out of 2 games. But the Irish will be no pushovers as they have some quality players who know these conditions quite well. We can expect a good game later tonight, but England are definitely the favourites.
Let’s see how this game unfolds later tonight in Southampton as points are up for grabs for both teams and want to win for different reasons.
