The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has taken some bold calls ahead of the New Zealand Test series commencing from 4th June. ECB have shown the door to Zak Crawley & Ollie Pope for the 1st Test match after their disastrous performance in the Ashes 2025-26. Zak Crawley averaged 27.30 in the Ashes, which may be one of the reasons for his omission, whereas Ollie Pope was dropped in the middle of the Ashes with an average of 20.83.
Marcus North, the former Durham director (*also a former Australian batter & becomes the first non-Englishman to be selector), replaces Luke Wright as the English selector who had resigned post Ashes 2025-26 debacle, citing personal reasons. It is understood that Marcus North pipped the ex-fast bowler Steven Finn for the role. Marcus North’s job would be quite critical as ‘Bazball’ has already received a lot of flak, still ECB has shown faith, as now the ECB somewhat badly wants results rather than excuses.
We selected a squad that we believe has a blend of proven international quality- Rob Key
ECB’s managing director, Rob Key, was having an interaction with the media. England have rewarded Durham’s Emilio Gay for a brilliant run in County cricket with 552 runs at 92 average and have hit 3 tons. Emilio is expected to open the batting. James Rew of Somerset has struck 1 century & 3 fifties, bringing another wicket-keeping option for England after Jamie Smith
“We selected a squad that we believe has a really exciting blend of proven international quality, strong county form, and players with huge potential to develop at the Test level,” said Rob Key.
“Emilio, James, and Sonny have all earned their opportunities through consistent performances and have impressed us not only with their talent, but with the way they’ve gone about their cricket in high-pressure situations,” he added.

We have monitored Ollie Robinson a lot- Rob Key
Rob Key was quite confident that Ollie Robinson would make a staggering comeback in Test cricket. Robinson last played in the 2024 Tests against India; the management has shown faith in him a lot. Robinson missed out on Ashes 2025-26. He got appointed skipper of Sussex, and the ECB is hoping that he will lead the bowling attack as he’s the only senior member in the bowling group (*Mark Wood is not fit) after the retirements of James Anderson & Stuart Broad
“It’s also great to welcome back players like Rehan, Matt, and Ollie, who all bring different qualities and experience to the group. Competition for places remains incredibly strong, and that’s exactly where we want to be as a Test team,” said Rob Key
Rob Key opens up on Jofra Archer’s unavailability
The exclusion of Jofra Archer for the opening Test match is puzzling. Jofra, in the ongoing IPL 2026, has taken 15 wickets in 11 matches for RR, and most of his wickets have come by hitting hard length, which is typical Test match bowling. Even Mark Butcher expressed his disappointment with Archer not being in the scheme of things. Perhaps now the ECB is giving priority to IPL over their traditional red ball cricket, or it is a part of workload management, given Archer is very injury prone, but he looks in the form of his life
“Jofra Archer is unavailable for the first Test. He continues to play in the IPL, and it is about building him up for red-ball cricket after a long six months on the road,” said Rob Key.
What lies ahead for England
ECB, though, has named Jacob Bethell in the opening Test match squad. Bethell hasn’t been able to lighten up IPL for RCB, as he has scored 85 runs in 6 innings. Sir Alastair Cook & Kevin Pietersen engaged in a war of words over Bethell that he should prioritize county cricket not IPL, KP, though he launched a scathing attack on Cook.
England haven’t been able to dominate the terms despite Bazball entertaining the fans & so-called revolutionizing the game. It would be harsh to say that only because stands are filled in England, Baz, Stokes & Key have been retained. The question now is what the trio can do differently? The inclusion of the first female ex-cricketer Sarah Taylor as fielding coach in the English setup somewhat means that ECB is adding fire & ice in their department, as it is often said that new faces bring innovative ideas.
England have made 7 changes from their Ashes drubbing. There are some reports suggesting that Ben Stokes might be back in the ODI frame as well, given North & Stokes share a good bond. Stokes had a brutal face injury while practicing in the nets; his look post-surgery somewhat gives goosebumps.
Stokes is at the twilight of his career, his committment is surreal, even if he retires today, he would be considered a legend, but Stokes’ priorities are set, he wants to get a silverware & utmost importantly Ashes 2027, which is still a long rally ahead.
