ICC T20 WC 2026: 3 Reasons For Scotland’s Crushing Loss To West Indies.

Scotland had their moments in Eden Gardens in Kolkata in Match 2 of the tournament but the new entrants went down in a tame fashion in the end losing by 35 runs against the 2-time champions West Indies who took revenge for the 2022 loss to Scotland in Hobart. Scotland were good in patches but were not consistent enough to challenge the West Indies who fought hard and got the win in the end. Scotland lost out on a few areas and we will try and list them out for you.

Inability to stop Shimron Hetmyer and lack of plans against him hurt Scotland.

Scotland started well after losing the toss and kept West Indies under check as only 33 runs were scored in the powerplay. Brandon King accelerated a bit after the powerplay to propel West Indies up but he fell and so did captain Shai Hope after getting starts. West Indies were 65 after 10 overs and needed a move on from someone. And that player turned out to be Shimron Hetmyer who blazed away in Kolkata.

Shimron Hetmyer came out all guns blazing batting at 3, and took on the bowling head on as Scotland lost the plot against him and his partners Rovman Powell, and Sherfane Rutherford. Scotland did not know what hit them and continued to bowl length balls at the left-hander and he plundered them for fun to get to his half-century. He also contributed with a fantastic catch while fielding to dismiss George Munsey. But with the bat he was sensational, and Scotland lacked creative ideas how to stop him.

Scotland needs to plan better and bowl better against the better oppositions failing which they will struggle in this competition. They are late entrants to the tournament and must pull up their socks to give trouble to the other teams. Looking ahead, they will look to improve on middle phase and death bowling to a degree to come back better as in powerplay they kept good lines and lengths.

Losing 3 wickets in the powerplay while chasing 182 hurt the Scotland team.

Chasing 183 for the win, Scotland needed a good solid start in powerplay to set things up for the middle and death overs phase. But they got off to a disastrous start as they lost early wickets inside the powerplay. Michael Jones went early and then Brandon McMullen came in got a start but he too fell and if that was not enough, George Munsey fell to a brilliant catch in the deep by Shimron Hetmyer. Losing 3 wickets in the powerplay is catastrophic when one is chasing 180+.

In this case, they lost 3 wickets early and were 37/3 in 6 overs to be behind the game. Yes, in terms of runs they were ahead of West Indies, but they lost 3 wickets and that was crucial as the heat was on the West Indies. Scotland tried to resurrect themselves through Richie Berrington the captain and Tom Bruce, but Scotland were always playing catch-up with regards to Required Run Rate. They tried their best to come back but it was a bridge too far in the end.

Going forward, Scotland would look to get off to a better start inside the powerplay, get a solid start and lay the platform for the others to come in and cash in later on. Even 45/0 or 50/0 would do for them. But losing early wickets sets you back in a massive chase of 182. If the chase was smaller, it may have been managed, but it was not to be for Scotland as they went down in a tame way in the end.

Losing 4 wickets in 5 balls which included a hat-trick to Romario Shepherd sealed the fate for Scotland.

Scotland despite the early setback came back in the middle phase of the game and accelerated to set things up for the last phase of the game. The required rate which was high was brought under control thanks to good batting from Berrington and Bruce. But once this partnership was broken, the wickets started to fall like a pack of cards. West Indies hung in there and were hungry to do well and they showed their prowess in the end.

The Scotland team were 133/5 in 16 overs when Romario Shepherd who had earlier gotten a wicket came back into the attack for his third over and what an over he bowled. He created history as he picked up the first hat-trick of the tournament and was not done there as he picked up 4 wickets in 5 balls. Matthew Cross was his first victim and then the rest of them came and went like a pack of cards. Michael Leask fell and so did Oliver Davidson was the hat-trick victim as he was clean bowled while Safyaan Sharif fell as well. This 17th over sealed it for West Indies.

It was a mere formality after this over as West Indies sealed the fate with a crushing win. Scotland fell like a pack of cards as if there was no planning behind the batting and they surrendered big time. They cannot afford to have the attitude of surrendering like this and have better mindset to do well in the coming games. If they do not improve their play, then other teams will find a way of beating them.

What Lies Ahead.

So, West Indies will be flying high and will go to Mumbai next to play England in a few days while Scotland will stay in Kolkata and will play Italy next. Lots of action to come for both teams going ahead in this tournament. Three matches everyday as the likes of New Zealand, Afghanistan, Nepal, England, Sri Lanka and Ireland are in action on Day 2 on Sunday. ‘

Lots to look forward to in all days of the World Cup.
