UAE will aim to make an impression and create a few ripples in the tournament when they play in the T20 World Cup 2026. UAE are involved in a lot of preparatory camps at their home and playing series which will hold them in good stead for the tournament coming up. They are placed in the Group of Death alongside New Zealand, South Africa, Afghanistan and Canada. So, getting into the next stage even on familiar conditions will be a task for sure.
UAE is led by experienced campaigner Muhammad Waseem and he plays all over the globe especially in ILT20 for MI Emirates. There are other players like Jawadullah, Asif Khan, Alishan Sharafu who are names that we may have to watch out for in this tournament and they have impressed in these conditions. They will aim to be competitive and will not be pushovers for sure.
We will give the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of Team UAE.
Strengths
- Successful Qualification Momentum: UAE secured the final World Cup spot by dominating the Asia or East Asia Pacific Qualifier and finishing in the top three meant they qualified for the World Cup. They beat Japan to empathically clinch qualification for the World Cup and have momentum with them.
- Strong Leadership and Key Performers: Captain and opening batter Muhammad Waseem is the team’s talisman and top scorer with a high strike rate and big match experience in global leagues. Alishan Sharafu has also been pivotal in anchoring and accelerating UAE’s batting.
- Bowling Strength in Spin and Experience in Pace: Haider Ali has been UAE’s key spinner with excellent economy and wicket-taking ability. Experienced bowlers like Junaid Siddique provide leadership and consistency with the ball.
- Improved Competitive Record Recently: UAE’s performances in T20 leagues and qualifiers show they can compete and win as a unit which is a notable development compared to historic associate team outings.
Weaknesses
- Overdependence on a Few Key Players: A lot of batting responsibility falls on Muhammad Waseem and Alishan Sharafu and beyond them scoring depth can be inconsistent. If the duo fail, then the others may fail to step up to the plate.
- Limited Experience Against Elite Teams: UAE has a history of limited wins against top cricketing nations and struggled in high pressure matches like the low totals they made against strong sides in Asia Cup warm-up games.
- Inconsistent Middle Order Support: The middle order lacks consistent big hitters and experienced finishers, potentially putting pressure on top order performances to guide them through and do bulk of the scoring. If the top order fails, UAE will struggle to post substantial totals.
- Resource Constraints Compared to Test Nations: As an associate team, UAE’s depth in high-level competitive exposure and bench strength lags behind full ICC members. This is a major issue for most associate teams and they struggle to match the elite teams. The level is different between the sides.
Opportunities
- Upset Potential in Group Stages: T20 cricket’s unpredictable nature allows associate teams to upset higher ranked sides on their day. UAE can exploit this especially on spin friendly or sub-continental pitches. They can play with freedom and upset the apple cards in group of death.
- Showcase Emerging Talent: Players like Mayank Kumar and other UAE cricketers have opportunities to make global impacts and attract franchise league interest. It is an opportunity to shine and showcase yourself and get noticed on the world stage.
- Benefit From Familiar Conditions: Playing Asian conditions similar to the IPL or ILT20 environments suits UAE’s batting and spin options especially against visiting teams unfamiliar with hot, flat wickets. This will be a great advantage and opportunity for UAE to cash in on vulnerabilities of the foreign sides.
- Growth of Cricket in UAE: Strong World Cup performances can boost cricket’s profile in the UAE, attracting investment, fan base growth, and grassroots development. This is huge and will help UAE prosper in this tournament and the World Cup.
Threats
- Strong Group Opponents: Groups in global T20 events typically include top teams like South Africa, New Zealand, and Afghanistan for that matter. This makes it a tough competition for progression for UAE. They will have to play out of their skins to advance to the next stage.
- Pressure of Big Stage Matches: Lack of extensive exposure to pressure situations against top sides can lead to inconsistent performances in must-win games. Crunch games where the game is on the line, UAE may wilt under pressure and not bring their A-game.
- Injuries or Player Availability is an issue: Any injury to key players like Muhammad Waseem or Haider Ali would create a significant competitive gap due to limited squad depth. Matches can become one-sided if the injuries happen to these aforementioned players and UAE may struggle to do well.
- Associate Team Stereotypes: Pre-tournament expectations often underestimate associate sides, but negative bias can impact the mindset and mirror performance pressure. This can happen which can lead to poor or underperformance from the UAE team.

Journey Ahead for UAE in T20 World Cup 2026
UAE comes into the World Cup on the back of a 2-0 loss to Ireland as the Irish outclassed them in all facets of the game They have already arrived in India and played a warm up game against Nepal and lost that game by 7 wickets failing to defend 145. They have another warm up game on Friday February 6th against debutants Italy.
They then get into the World Cup by starting against New Zealand on 10th February in an afternoon game at 3 PM IST. Then on 13th February, they will face Canada in an afternoon game at 3 PM IST. They will then face neighbours Afghanistan on 16th February in a morning game at 11 AM IST. Their final league game will be against South Africa on 18th February in another morning game at 11 AM IST.
UAE will fancy beating Canada but will find the going tough against the other elite sides. If they can upset them even one of them, it will be a landmark moment for them. Realistically speaking, a group stage exit is the most likely outcome for UAE. But stranger things have happened before and we cannot count any side out. But looking at form and sides involved in group, a group stage exit is likely. Let’s see if any emerging player makes a name for himself.
We will wait and watch how UAE performs in this tournament as they are slated to play all their matches in India as we speak.
