At the first match between South Africa and West Indies is officially over, it was pretty clear that one side dominated from start to finish in all aspects of this match. Seeing that it was the Proteas side that clearly came out on top, this performance showed that they are more than ready for the World Cup ahead and should be completely locked in.
One surprise was that they opened with Lhuan-Dre Pretorious instead of Quinton De Kock, but that proved to be more about the growth of other players than just winning. Despite many stars like Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Tristan Stubbs not playing, captain Aiden Markram did a tremendous job of guiding this side on the right path towards the end.
Meanwhile, West Indies had a very different result after finishing this match, and it will be something they need to study all over again. Getting the news that Alzarri Joseph is not going to be playing this upcoming World Cup, it was quite disheartening for them and has made them more depleted in this current situation.
A side that originally had a lot of hype built up as an underdog squad, it may no longer stand because of the various issues their squad is facing. Knowing that Shai Hope didn’t play today, Roston Chase took over as captain, but it almost felt like once the players started losing wickets, all confidence went away, and they kept on beating themselves with self-inflicted wounds.
West Indies: A Very Strong Start Ended Up In Another Average Performance For This Unit
Looking at the way West Indies batted today, it was clear that they had an edge in the first 80% of their innings, but things completely took a turn when pressure struck them. Opener Brandon King was vital in an opening 39-run partnership with Johnson Charles as they both were taking advantage of the empty gaps around the ground.
Brandon King kept on finding easy boundaries on all sides of the ground and was able to keep moving his bat well, while finishing at 27 on 16 deliveries. With him and Charles departing at very similar times, the West Indies lost a third wicket in Sherfane Rutherford within the powerplay as well, as he ended up getting bowled for just 6.

Seeing that this squad was already 50/3 without even getting past the 6th over, Matthew Forde developed a very solid partnership with Roston Chase. In a bit of a surprise move, West Indies moved Forde up ahead to hit with power, and he provided two sixes during their 29-run combination. With him removed by Corbin Bosch, the biggest duo came when Shimron Hetmyer stepped in as him, plus Rovman Powell moved West Indies to 169/6 after just starting 95/5.
Knowing that Hetmyer is built for these finishing moments and continues working his way up to be a main piece on this squad, he provided his side with a 48-run knock, including 7 boundaries, while Rovman Powell also had 29 in his solid innings.
South Africa: Bowlers Had Very Solid Outing But Also Were Quite Expensive For The Most Part
On the bowling attack of South Africa, it was pretty clear that they had a great plan to get batsmen out, but also weren’t on point with controlling runs. Looking at the way Kagiso Rabada bowled today, he was someone who allowed nearly 9 runs an over and couldn’t provide any threat near the wicket. Someone who is generally strong with his pace and can really turn the ball inside or out, it was pretty clear this ended up not being the day for him.
From the left-hand side, Kwena Maphaka actually did a solid job, allowing just 7.50 runs per over, but that conservative approach also didn’t let him find any wickets or provide opportunities during his full for overs.

Now talking about the positives, this spin attack did a tremendous job as they continued providing turn on a top-notch surface. Left-handed piece Keshav Maharaj took two wickets on this day, and despite giving up 44 runs in his four total overs, it was during a time when the West Indies players started attacking hard.
Next to him, much credit goes to George Linde, who ended up getting player of the match after providing three different wickets and keeping his economy low. Someone who gave up a little over 6 runs an over, while still being controlled in his attack, he was one of the main reasons to lower West Indies total score, while right-handed pacer Corbin Bosch closed it out well.
South Africa: Finishing This Match In Style Was On The Bingo Card Today
As the Proteas had to chase down 174 runs to win in the 2nd innings, many thought it would be a challenge for them, given that the surface dried up a lot. Despite that, though, this unit was able to win in a very classical fashion and take a convincing 1-0 lead with their batting having even more confidence going into the 2nd match.
Opener Aiden Markram continued playing with his unique style and patience, which allowed the star batter to hit another classical half-century as the main right-handed piece today. In a partnership with Lhuan-Dre Pretorious at first, the duo was able to combine for 83 runs and make this target much easier than it originally looked.

With Pretorious being able to get to 44 of 28 balls before Roston Chase took an absolute stunner, the young left-handed batsman showed what class he has, alongside power-hitting skills. Hitting six boundaries and one massive blow that went for 6, he really created an amazing mismatch with Markram.
Knowing that, Markram than was then able to create another great partnership with left-handed Ryan Rickleton at one-down, as they went for another 90+ runs and finished the game. As Rickleton is someone who plays more controlled, he did hit two sixes today, but finished 40 of 32, while Aiden Markram’s aggressive approach got him to 86 with 12 boundaries at the very end.
West Indies: A Nightmare Bowling Performance Demolished This Side
With the World Cup almost here, seeing the West Indies bowl today was a complete cause for concern, as they had no plan and were getting demolished in almost every over. Starting with Jayden Seals, who is supposed to be their main piece, the right-handed pacer bowled three full overs and gave up 29 runs in them.

Allowing nearly 10 an over, it nearly became a problem because even Matthew Forde only gave in one over where he allowed 13. Knowing that Romario Shepard would be expensive and Jason Holder allowed 41 in 3.5 today, the only spinners they could turn to were Roston Chase, plus Akeal Hosein, but they both struggled to provide anything significant.
