In Match 20 of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, hosts India are back in action as they face powerhouses England in a critical clash of the tournament. Two spots are already sealed in the World Cup semi-finals and two spots remain up for grabs. Both teams won’t give an inch as a loss could be detrimental especially for the hosts India. They will want to get back to winning ways.
After winning their first two matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, India suffered narrow defeats to South Africa and defending champions Australia to slip up in the semi-finals race. Destiny is still in Harmanpreet Kaur-led team’s control. But if they slip up now, then things could get out of hand. For England and Nat Sciver-Brunt, they are in a better position as they won their first three games before almost losing to Pakistan but weather gods saved them and got a point. They need one more win and a semi-final spot will be theirs. So, stage is set for an interesting battle in Indore.
Overview
This clash is one of the biggest clashes of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup and with qualification up for grabs, this is a huge clash for both teams as India and England clash in Indore later today. First things first, after Colombo and Vizag, Indore is also in danger of a rain-curtailed contest. There has been some rain at the venue in the past three days, including a heavy downpour on the match eve. This particular game will be played on a fresh red soiled surface.
India have recently had a pretty good record against the English side in the format, and many of their players also fancy their chances against the Nat Sciver-Brunt led unit. With the competition cruising towards its last phase, we are left with only two semi-final spots, after Australia and South Africa grabbed the first two spots.
Currently, England are third on the points table, with 7 points from 4 matches. They have won three and had a washout against Pakistan. They started off with a dominating 10-wicket win over the Proteas. Following this, they came out on top of a hard fought game against Bangladesh by four wickets. Then they brushed aside the co-hosts Sri Lanka by 89 runs to make it three wins in a row. However, if the rain didn’t come long enough to force a no result against the Fatima Sana led side. England wouldn’t have been one of the unbeaten teams in the tournament.
England were in all sorts of trouble after losing 7/78 at one stage against the Women in Green. Despite the rain delays, the Sciver-Brunt led side managed to crawl to 133/9, aided by a lower order blitz. Pakistan were given a DLS adjusted target of 113 runs in 31 overs and with them at 34/0 in the 7th over, there was only one team winning that game. England will be more than happy to share a point with Pakistan.
It wasn’t the only time England’s batting collapsed. Apart from their opening fixture, the batting line-up has been blowing hot and cold. However, the bowling group looks in some touch. Linsey Smith and Sophie Ecclestone could be the go-to bowlers for the four-time champions, given India’s recent struggles against the left-arm spin. Ecclestone and Lauren Bell missed out on the last game due to illness. Both have recovered, so the two key bowlers should be back in the XI. A win in this game will lock England as the third semi-finalist of the ongoing World Cup.
On the other hand, India who started with two big wins against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, find themselves in a bit of a hole after losing to the two semi-finalists South Africa and Australia. Team India are currently fourth on the points table with four points from as many matches. A win in this game will keep them ahead of New Zealand, who are in fifth place and also have a game against the Harmanpreet Kaur-led outfit. However, a hiccup for the third time in a row will only make their life difficult going forward.
Like England, India’s batting hasn’t been firing on all cylinders, and moreover, has required some individual brilliance to pull them out of trouble. If they managed to escape Sri Lanka and Pakistan challenges with the Women in Blue being the dominant side, they were made to pay heavily for their errors, with the Proteas and Women in Yellow making merry of the lapse in concentration.
India should have closed out the game against South Africa after Richa Ghosh played a blinder, and the bowlers set up the game with crucial wickets early on, leaving the opposition reeling. It wasn’t meant to be in the end as Nadine de Klerk played an innings of her life to pull off a heist for South Africa.
A batting paradise was provided in Vizag against the mighty Australia. Indian openers finally found the rhythm as Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal set the stage on fire with classy half-centuries. India cruised past 150 without losing any wickets in the blink of an eye. The middle order got the starts, but they threw their wickets away after getting set and going at a good pace. India still managed to post 330 but failed to bat the full 50 overs. On that kind of track, the hosts left 15-20 runs behind.
India’s bowling attack looked off colour, with Alyssa Healy going hammer and tongs and smashing a breath-taking century. However, with India managing to dismiss Phoebe Litchfield and seeing Ellyse Perry retired hurt, the spinners staged a comeback. N Shree Charani was outstanding amidst the run fest and picked up 3/41, including the wicket of Healy. Deepti Sharma chipped in with a couple of wickets. Amanjot Kaur, who was expensive in her first spell, picked up two crucial scalps late in the game.
Kranti Gaud, who has had a good start in the tournament and managed to keep the experienced Renuka Singh Thakur out of the XI, was super expensive, along with Sneh Rana. Perry came back to bat and played a significant role in India’s defeat as the defending champions got home with an over to spare, handing India back-to-back three wicket defeats.
Both teams are in search of their best game and performance. England are doing better than India and start as favourites. We are in for a cracking contest as only time will tell whether Women in Blue can upstage the English Lioness.
Head-To-Head
India and England have played each other in 79 ODIs with England having the upper hand. England have won 41 games, while India have won 36 games. 2 matches have ended in a No Result. In the last 10 fixtures, though it is 6-4 in India’s favour. India won the recently concluded ODI series in England by 2-1 winning the deciding game of the series by 13 runs in a close finish.
Pitch & Weather Report
The pitch at the Holkar Stadium will most likely favour the batters as we expect a flat surface with some assistance for the spinners as the game progresses. The toss could play a significant role, with chasing teams having an advantage. India are yet to win a toss in this tournament, and would like to win the toss and opt to chase.
The weather in Indore is expected to be warm and mostly sunny providing ideal conditions for the match at the Holkar Stadium. The maximum temperatures will be around 30 degrees Celsius with slight breeze around. Temperatures will cool down by the evening. There is no significant chance of rain, ensuring a dry and comfortable environment for both players and spectators.
Predicted/Probable Playing XI of both sides
Here, we will predict the probable playing XIs of both sides.
India XI: Pratika Rawal, Smriti Mandhana, Harleen Deol, Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (wk), Amanjot Kaur, Sneh Rana, Kranti Gaud, N Shree Charani.
England XI: Tammy Beaumont, Amy Jones (wk), Heather Knight, Nat Sciver-Brunt (c), Sophia Dunkley, Emma Lamb, Alice Capsey, Charlie Dean, Sophie Ecclestone, Linsey Smith, Lauren Bell.
Key Players to watch out for in this clash
Smriti Mandhana: Smriti Mandhana looked off colour in the first three games, but it was a welcome return to form for the southpaw in the game against Australia where she made a stylish 80 in quick time. Now what Mandhana will want from her point of view and India’s point of view is to go big and convert it into a big hundred. And what better opportunity than do it against England with tournament on the line. If Mandhana fires to her potential, it will go a long way in getting India the right score. India will want Mandhana to fire today.
Deepti Sharma: Deepti Sharma is an integral member of the side as an all-rounder. She can contribute with the ball and keep things under check and can bat down the order when required and score quick runs. Deepti has a good record against England and so India will be hoping she does well in this game and helps India get the crucial two points. It will require a team effort to win, but Deepti has an important role to play if India are to win this game.
Nat Sciver–Brunt: The England captain has been leading from the front as always. She was the reason why they beat Sri Lanka. Batting at Number 4, she can control the innings beautifully and then can accelerate towards the end. She is handy with the ball taking crucial wickets and providing great balance to the English side. She loves playing against India, and would want to contribute big time and lead her side to grab the semi-final spot.
Sophie Ecclestone: Sophie Ecclestone missed the last game against Pakistan due to illness but has recovered now. She will be ready to pounce on the Indians. Considering India’s struggle against left-arm spin, Sophie will be a handful for India. She can bamboozle the Indians especially in the middle overs and the middle order as well. She is England’s number one bowler and would want to fire in all cylinders in order to do well and help her side win.
Key Stats/Records that we may have to watch out for in this clash
- Pratika Rawal needs 18 runs to reach 1000 ODI runs.
- Deepti Sharma requires 1 wicket to complete 150 ODI wickets.
- Amy Jones is 1 run short of completing 2500 ODI runs.
- Charlie Dean needs 36 runs to reach 500 ODI runs.
- Sophie Ecclestone who has 134 wickets is 2 wickets away from becoming England’s second highest wicket-taker in ODIs.
Predicted/Possible Outcome of the Match
For starters, we are hoping the rain stays away and signs are promising that it will in Indore. Coming to the match, we reckon looking at current form and on paper, England will start as favourites. They are in better form than India at this stage. India though will know they can beat England if they bat well and then the spinners can take over. They have beaten England earlier in the year.
A fascinating contest awaits us now in Indore. England favourites but India will believe they can upstage them. Let’s see how it goes later this afternoon in Indore on Super Sunday.
