ENG vs IND: Joe Root- Sachin Tendulkar Record Debate Heats Up After Jos Buttler’s Remark

Former England white‑ball captain Jos Buttler has sparked fresh debate around Joe Root and the prospect of him surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s all‑time Test run record, but insists that records aren’t Root’s main focus.

On his YouTube channel For the Love of Cricket, Buttler emphasized that Root “is not hunting down Sachin Tendulkar”, adding that chasing milestones is not how Root approaches his batting. Despite that, Buttler believes Root has a realistic shot: “If he stays fit, quite an attainable kind of thing, which is absolutely mind‑blowing”

Joe Root Tendulkar Record: Is the England Batter on Track to Create History?

At age 34, Root has amassed 13,409 Test runs, trailing Tendulkar’s 15,921 by just 2,512 runs, having surpassed legends like Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis with his 38th Test century scored in the recent fourth Test at Old Trafford. Buttler expressed confidence that Root could overtake that tally by 2027 if he continues to play consistently—echoing predictions by former England captain Michael Vaughan.

Fans have noted Root’s dedication to team success over individual milestones. As one Reddit commenter observed:

“Rooty has said enough times that he doesn’t care about the record. He just wants to bat and win matches for England”

Broad asked him if he had ever thought that Root wouldn’t be able to do it?

He replied,

“Hunger is never an issue I see with Root. He isn’t going to wake up in 2-3 years and think he doesn’t have the love for batting or playing for England. He has just been playing so well, even during that period when England won one game in 17 and he was captain. But he just doesn’t see it like that at all. Which I think is the great thing about him. He just loves playing and winning matches. So it’s going to be pretty cool to watch whether he stays at No. 2 or scales that Everest and goes to No. 1,”

With England leading India 2–1 in the ongoing test series, Root’s form has been key. His recent 150‑run innings helped take a commanding series position heading into the final Test at The Oval from July 31 to August 4.

In short: while Joe Root chasing Tendulkar’s record remains a tantalizing storyline, it’s clear—according to Buttler—that Root is driven by performance and passion, not milestones. Still, cricket fans will eagerly track whether he eventually scales that Everest.
