MI vs GT: Reasons For GT’s Heart-Wrenching Defeat Against MI

GT lost to MI by 20 runs in a high scoring thriller at Mullanpur, MI‘s successful streak in defending 200-plus totals remains unbreakable.

Poor bowling changes

Prasidh Krishna used to be a one change bowler who always bowled in the middle overs throughout the tournament and was successful in it.
Shubman Gill gave him 2 overs in the powerplay where he went for 36 runs. He then came in the death overs where he usually used to bowl, and went for just 17 runs in his last 2 overs and picked 2 wickets.

Gerald Coetzee has a raw pace which could trouble the batter with the new ball, but he was not used in the Powerplay. He was introduced in the 11th over and couldn’t be much effective with the old ball as he went for 51 runs in his 3 overs. Coetzee should have bowled in the place of Prasidh Krishna in the Powerplay.

This switch in role cost high for Gujarat Titans has both conceded 104 runs in their 7 overs combined. They used only one over Washington Sundar where he went for just 7 runs. When all of your fast bowlers are going for runs, Washington could have been used more. Washington is a defensive bowler who could have contained runs in the middle.

Catches win Matches

Gujarat Titans’ were very sloppy in the field with a lot of missed fields and dropped catches. Fielding was the primary difference between these two sides. They dropped two catches for Rohit Sharma initially and he made sure they paid for it by scoring 81 runs in 50 balls as he hit a blistering 9 fours and 4 huge sixes. He is such a champion player whom you can’t give him any chances

Poor batting at death

Shubman Gill got out in the first over of Trent Boult, but Another opener Sai Sudharsan carried the chase single handedly by scoring 80 runs of 52 balls. Washington Sundar accompanied him well by scoring 48 runs off 24 balls. GT were well in the chase with 148/2 in 13 overs. Bumrah came to bowl the 14th over and dismissed Washington Sundar with an unplayable toe crushing yorker.

Momentum changed towards MI after that, MI bowlers nailed the yorkers well in the death overs as Gujarat Titans’ finishers struggled to find boundaries. GT scored just 34 runs in the last 4 overs and lost the match by 20 runs. Ashwani Kumar’s ( 3.3 – 28 – 1 ) and Jasprit Bumrah’s ( 4-27-1 ) economical spells in the death were the difference between those extra 20 runs in which MI won the match.
