Defending 215 runs, Jasprit Bumrah wiped out the entire lower middle order of Lucknow in a single over, handing MI a sensational win by 54 runs. Bowling in his return spell in the 15th over, Jasprit Bumrah picked up the wickets of David Miller, Abdul Samad, and Avesh Khan in the space of 5 balls.

It was a night of milestones for MI: this victory marked their fifth in a row and their 150th win in IPL history.

Blistering half-centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav powered MI to 215 before Jasprit Bumrah (4-22) and Trent Boult (3-20) took over in the second innings, delivering MI’s first-ever league-phase win over LSG.

Pitch Report and Toss

Pitch Report : Pitch is in the center, 63 meter boundary either side and 73 meters down the ground. Historically in day games, there have been four wins batting first and four wins chasing. There’s a magnificent covering of grass. Underneath the covering, though, it’s actually quite dry. And that bristle that just comes up might mean that it holds up to start with.

Trying to keep moisture in this wicket has got to be a huge challenge for the ground staff. As the game goes on, the ball might slow up ever so slightly. If I was winning the toss, I’d probably chase. I know it’s a big, big call in this heat. But you just don’t know how slow later on this wicket might be. If anything, might even get better later on reckons Ian Bishop and Eoin Morgan in their pitch report.

Toss : Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and chose to bowl with one change in the Playing XI bringing in fit again Mayank Yadav for Shardul Thakur. Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya batting first made two changes in the Playing XI bringing in Karn Sharma for Vignesh Puthur and debutant Corbin Bosch for Mitchell Santner.

Ryan Rickleton and Suryakumar Yadav’s half centuries alongside useful cameos powers MI to 215 in 20 overs

The spotlight was on Mayank Yadav’s return after Rishabh Pant won the toss, but it was MI’s openers who set the tone. Rohit Sharma took on Mayank early, pulling him for a pair of sixes before falling to a 120.8kph wide slower ball, edging to short third. That was LSG’s only breakthrough in a PowerPlay dominated by Ryan Rickelton.

The day began with Mayank being announced as Shardul Thakur’s replacement. He took the new ball and bowled in the mid 130-kph to early 140-kph range. The bumper he tried in the first over got spongy bounce and went above Rickelton’s head. But an overpitched ball next up was thumped down the ground.

In his next over, Mayank tested the middle of the pitch. Rohit Sharma hit two sixes with the pull, one in front of square and one behind. The response was a change in line, length and pace. It worked as Rohit reached out and sliced a slower length ball to short third.

Rickelton could’ve been run-out in the second over but Aiden Markram missed a direct hit from point. Rickelton showed his trust in the pitch as he slogged and pulled balls off a length. He drove a full toss down to take 15 off Prince Yadav’s first over. There were no other chances created in the 66-run powerplay.

Digvesh Rathi came in having not conceded a single six in the powerplay, but Rickelton slog swept him twice for two sixes over midwicket before reaching a 25-ball fifty. Rathi changed ends and bowled quicker and straighter on return. Rickelton’s tried to capitalise on the googly when it was tossed up outside off, but ended up slicing straight to point in the ninth over. He made 58.

The left-hander, who survived an early run-out chance, blazed to 49 off 24 balls, taking down Prince Yadav with a six and two fours, then punishing the spinners – pulling Ravi Bishnoi for six and hammering Digvesh Rathi for two more in a 19-run sixth over, the most the young spinner has conceded in an over this season.

Rathi made amends for his expensive PowerPlay by removing Ryan Rickelton for a 32-ball 58 with a wrong ‘un that gripped off the surface. But LSG’s hopes of clawing back ran into the Suryakumar Yadav wall. The MI vice-captain kickstarted his innings by lofting Mayank over mid-off and slog-swept Ravi Bishnoi for six in the next over.

Mayank was brought back with Suryakumar new at the crease. That didn’t work as Suryakumar launched him over his head. Jacks then got a couple of boundaries behind square both sides of the wicket. The slower balls, though, did keep the batters down and MI moved to 105 for 2 in 10 overs.

Prince’s reverse-swinging yorker then knocked Jacks over for 29. Suryakumar kept MI’s tempo going by hitting Bishnoi for a four and two sixes in the 13th over, but the 16-run over also saw the dismissal of Tilak Varma.

Suryakumar brought up his 4000th run in the IPL with a ramp off Avesh Khan and got another six off Prince over fine leg again. At 157 for 5 in 15 overs, MI were ready to launch but Mayank set them back when he dislodged Hardik’s leg stump and gave away just five runs in the 16th over. Suryakumar was then dismissed for 54 off 28 balls, but MI kept finding the boundaries.

He tore into Bishnoi again, smashing another six and two fours, even as Prince Yadav gave LSG some relief by bowling Will Jacks for 29. Bishnoi ended his spell with Tilak Varma’s wicket, but Suryakumar continued to dazzle, improvising a hook over fine-leg after premeditating a scoop. He also became the third-fastest to 4000 IPL runs, behind only Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers in balls faced.

Rathi’s off-day continued at the death as LSG continued with just five bowlers. The over started with an edged reverse sweep that went for four. It finished with 19 runs as Naman Dhir and Corbin Bosch got under the ball and launched sixes over the leg side. MI soared past 200 with an over to go. Four full tosses from Avesh in the 20th over helped MI post 215.

MI’s finish stuttered initially as Mayank Yadav bowled Hardik Pandya, but Naman Dhir injected momentum with back-to-back fours off Prince Yadav. Suryakumar launched his fourth six to bring up a 27-ball half-century but fell immediately after, driving Avesh Khan straight to extra cover. Corbin Bosch, replacing the injured Mitchell Santner, struck a six and a four off Digvesh Rathi, while Dhir smashed another six to cap a second 19-run over off the young spinner. Dhir’s unbeaten 25* off 11, including a last-ball six, powered MI to a formidable 215.

Jasprit Bumrah’s returns to best alongside Trent Boult as Mumbai Indians win 5 in a row in IPL 2025

Jasprit Bumrah set the tone with a brilliant first over, bowling three dots before dismissing Aiden Markram at deep square leg, a wicket that took him past Lasith Malinga’s tally of 170 IPL scalps. Mitchell Marsh counterpunched with a six each off Deepak Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah, but LSG managed just 40 in the first five overs. Nicholas Pooran then shifted gears, smashing Chahar for two sixes over point and another over deep mid-wicket to lift LSG to 60/1 at the end of the PowerPlay.

Aiden Markram was able to slash Boult, who started from around the wicket, through the off side for a couple of fours. Marsh then launched a flick over square leg off Deepak Chahar that nearly went out of the ground. Jasprit Bumrah was slightly lucky to get Markram as hi middled flick went straight into the hands of deep-backward square. Pooran got hold of Chahar in his third powerplay over, scything two wide yorkers for six before pulling a short ball for one more as LSG posted to 60 for 1 in six.

LSG’s hopes of taking the chase deep took a major blow just one ball after the PowerPlay as Will Jacks had Nicholas Pooran holing out to long-off. Jacks struck again two balls later, with an out-of-sorts Rishabh Pant reverse-sweeping his second ball straight to short third. Marsh tried to steady the innings with successive boundaries off Hardik Pandya, while Ayush Badoni launched a 20-run assault on Karn Sharma with two sixes and a four.

With Mitchell Santner out due to a finger niggle and a left-hander on the tear, Jacks was brought on ahead of Karn Sharma and he struck twice. The first ball was lobbed up in the slot but Pooran mistimed a lofted drive to long-off, where Suryakumar took a good catch. Pant was back at No. 4 but endured another short stay at the crease. He edged a cut for four through third before miscuing a premeditated reverse sweep to Karn at short third. The wicket led to the two overs following the powerplay going for just 13 runs.

But just as LSG threatened a comeback, Hardik reintroduced Trent Boult, who struck immediately, a slower short ball inducing a mistimed pull from Marsh. Boult then dismissed Badoni with another slower short ball sliced to point, snuffing out any remaining LSG hopes.

Ayush Badoni got off to a watchful start. He was on seven off seven balls before making room and and slashing Karn for two fours and a six. Marsh hit two fours off Hardik Pandya’s sole over but slowed down from 31 off 17 to 34 off 24. Hardik rang in the changes as five different bowlers were used between the eighth and 13th overs.

The asking rate rose close to 12 when Boult, on return, got Marsh with a slower ball and reduce LSG to 110 for 4. Badoni and David Miller continued the trend of the earlier partnership with Miller, the new batter, getting off to a quick start (21 off 13) while the set batter slowed down. Badoni got away with an undetected edge in the 14th over but fell to a slower ball from Boult to end with 35 off 22 after being 30 off 15.

Jasprit Bumrah returned with LSG needing 76 off 30 balls and got three wickets, starting with Miller’s. Jasprit Bumrah followed Miller with a low full toss that was flicked to Bosch at deep midwicket. A dipping slower yorker had Abdul Samad early into the shot and knocked middle stump back. A pace-on yorker smashed Avesh’s off stump. At 142 for 8, the game was effectively done.

Bishnoi was able to launch a couple of sixes, the second of which was off Jasprit Bumrah and brought out smiles and fist-pumps, but Bosch and Boult cleaned up the tail and completed MI’s 150th IPL win comprehensively.

The 16th over shifted the focus of the game to MI’s victory margin and its impact on their Net Run Rate. Jasprit Bumrah produced a low full toss that David Miller flicked straight to deep mid-wicket. The star pacer then bowled Abdul Samad and Avesh Khan off successive deliveries, one with a slower ball, the other with a pinpoint yorker. A hat-trick and a third IPL five-fer narrowly escaped him, but Jasprit Bumrah’s 4 for 22 fired the five-time champions back into the Playoffs positions.

In the middle overs. At the halfway mark of the chase, LSG needed 112 from 60 balls with Mitchell Marsh and Ayush Badoni well-set. But Trent Boult’s double strike, dismissing both Marsh and Badoni, broke the back of the chase. Boult’s two overs cost just nine runs and left LSG with too much to do. It was also in this phase that MI, despite losing a few wickets in their batting innings, never allowed the scoring rate to dip, keeping the pressure firmly on LSG.

Presentations and Road Ahead

Rishabh Pant the losing LSG skipper said : We feel as a team it was the right decision for us (to bowl first), because most of the time we back our batting. Yes bowlers, we want to give the best conditions for them, but today wasn’t our day. The other team is playing good cricket, you’ve got to give credit to them instead of just looking to question yourself. As a team, the dip is there but we can figure it out because we have a break at the right time.

Keeping it very simple, not thinking about it too much (talking about his poor run). In a season like this, where things are not going your way, you’re going to start questioning yourself as a player – that’s not something you want to do. When the team is doing well, you’ve got to think about that.

It’s a team game. Every time if you take out the individual, it’s not the right thing to do I guess. Definitely it was good to see him coming back from injury. First match, he’s getting that rhythm, you can see it. Hopefully he gets better and better next time.

Hardik Pandya the winning MI skipper said : The momentum which we had, we are carrying it forward. Everyone is clicking. The kids created the atmosphere for us, we did it for them, so very glad. Everyone kept taking their chances. The way Bosch came in and smashed those sixes, everyone chipped in. The bowlers were spot on. Good teams are made of the same, when everyone chips in.

From Ryan, Will, to Bosch, myself, everyone is chipping in. I bowl when I am required. Today was the best chance for Bosch to come in and bowl. This competition is very tough, can’t get carried away. We need to play good cricket, always prepare for the next game and keep up with the momentum going forward.

Will Jacks Player of the Match for his all round show said :  I will always be a batter who bowls, my bowling is important. It’s important for the team and myself. I have worked hard on my bowling, doesn’t matter what others say. There are still improvements to be made.

We know how important Pant and Pooran are. I was relieved after taking Pooran’s wicket. I get more opportunity bowling to left-handers, I like it. I have enjoyed my time here, they have been welcoming. They have given me confidence to be a part of this family. As a team we are finding a nice rhythm, need to keep going. Bumrah is an incredible bowler, it’s pretty tough to face him in the nexts, so I am very happy he is in my team. He is amazing to watch.

Mumbai Indians (MI) sealed their fifth consecutive win in comfortable fashion this season to climb to 12 points in ten games. It was a near-perfect day for the hosts in front of 19,000 kids as they defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the first time in a league-stage fixture. Half-centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav – who also became the third-fastest to 4000 IPL runs – helped them set 215 before Jasprit Bumrah’s four-for and Trent Boult’s three-for sealed a 54-run win.

Mayank Yadav was back in LSG colours for the first time this season. His pace had dropped but his slower ones were effective and took 2 for 40 in his four overs. Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran got starts but LSG’s middle order, including an out-of-sorts Rishabh Pant, crumbled again. The chase fizzled out with the their last six wickets falling for 26 runs.

Mumbai Indians have jumped to the second spot as a result of this clinical victory against Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede. Their opener – Ryan Rickelton set the tone earlier in the day by notching up a quick fifty, while Suryakumar Yadav played another pivotal knock as he climbed the ladder and became the highest run-getter of the season.

There were a few cameos by the MI batters, particularly Naman Dhir and Corbin Bosch, that helped Mumbai Indians breach the 200-run mark. In reply, LSG lost their in-form batsman – Markram within the powerplay, but Pooran and Marsh played some attacking cricket to keep the boundaries coming while they were at the crease.

They failed to convert their starts though and the batters who followed next couldn’t add anything substantial either as MI kept chipping away at the wickets. Jacks picked up a couple of wickets by dismissing Pooran and Pant, Boult took three wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah was pick of the lot as the ace pacer took four wickets and helped MI clinch an emphatic win.

MI head to Jaipur to take on a struggling Rajasthan Royals on May 1. LSG have a week off and will be in action only next Sunday, when they’ll travel to Dharamsala to take on Punjab Kings.
