WI VS SL: West Indies Desperate To Get Some Points In WTC Cycle.

After an exciting white-ball leg of the series between West Indies and Sri Lanka, the focus shifts to the red-ball game where we will have a 2-match Test series coming our way. After the Lankans won the ODI series 1-0 with the second and third ODI abandoned, West Indies bounced back to take the T20I series 2-1. Now, it is time for red ball cricket. The bandwagon has move from Jamaica to Antigua which will host both the Test matches.

West Indies under Roston Chase has had a torrid time in this cycle and are languishing at the bottom of the points table while Sri Lanka will be led by Dhananjaya de Silva and the tourists have played one series at home against Bangladesh and won that 2-match series 1-0 and so, they are in third place as we speak. The stage is set for an interesting battle ahead of us.

Overview.

After an interesting and exciting white-ball series where both teams shared the honours in winning series, the focus now shifts to red-ball cricket and WTC cycle as crucial points are up for grabs for both teams. Sri Lanka won the ODI series 1-0 while West Indies won the T20I series 2-1 but that counts for nothing in this Test match and series. Jamaica hosted the white-ball leg of the tour and now the bandwagon shifts to Antigua as the venue will host both the Test matches scheduled.

West Indies has had a torrid time in the longest format of the game when they last played at home against Australia as they were handed a crushing 0-3 defeat. Following this, they had a forgettable series in India and New Zealand. The last time they batted in a Test at home was nearly a year ago when they were bundled out for just 27 at Sabina Park, Kingston Jamaica.

The hosts are at the rock bottom of the World Test Championship points table, having lost seven of their eight games. The only match where they avoided a defeat was against New Zealand, thanks to a surreal double ton from Justin Greaves in Christchurch last year. On the other hand, Sri Lanka sit in third place, but they have played only two Tests in this WTC cycle. Their last Test series was a year ago, at home against Bangladesh, in a two-match assignment that the Lankans won 1-0.

The Sobers-Tissera Trophy is in in its fifth edition. The Sri Lankan side is the current holder and has won both series at home, while both editions in the Caribbean Islands have been drawn. The last time Sri Lanka played Tests in the West Indies was in 2021, and both the games were drawn, interestingly, they took place at the same venue where this series is scheduled.

The Roston Chase-led side is looking to regain the lost glory. Fast bowlers Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph return to the Test arena after missing out on the last two tours due to injuries. Wicket-keeper batters Joshua Da Silva and Amir Jangoo have earned recalls. Both got deserving call-ups after brilliant domestic seasons. Da Silva last played a Test back in 2024, against Bangladesh, while Jangoo’s one and only Test cap was in 2025 against Pakistan.

Making way for all these returning players are Alick Athanaze, Tevin Imlach, Johann Layne, and Ojay Shields, who were all part of the squad that toured New Zealand late last year. Veteran Kemar Roach is expected to lead a bowling attack that includes speedsters Alzarri, Shamar, and Jayden Seales, with Anderson Phillip in the backup. Jomel Warrican, the Test vice-captain, will share the spin-bowling duties alongside his skipper Chase.

John Campbell, Brandon King, and Kavem Hodge will take care of the top order, while Shai Hope and Greaves will be handy in the middle order. Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Jangoo and Da Silva will step if required. Speaking of the visitors, it will be Gary Kirsten’s first Test series as Sri Lanka’s head coach. Despite a shift in captaincy in limited overs, the team management has continued with Dhananjaya de Silva as their red-ball skipper. Uncapped bowling all-rounder Isitha Wijesundara and uncapped batter Pasindu Sooriyabandara have retained their spots in the squad.

Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, skipper Da Silva and Kamindu Mendis are the key batters in the Lankans set-up. The likes of Lahiru Udara, who made his debut in the last series, & Nishan Madushka, who last played a Test against England in 2024, will fight for the opening spot. Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, who last played a Test against Australia in 2025, and Kasun Rajitha are the pace-bowling engine of the Lankan unit, along with all-rounder Milan Rathnayake.

Prabath Jayasuriya will lead the spin attack, with many all-rounders in support, including Ramesh Mendis, who is returning to the Test arena after nearly a gap of 1.5 years and Sonal Dinusha. Pavan Rathnayake, Oshada Fernando, Akila Dananjaya, Tharindu Ratnayake and Dunith Wellalage have been axed from the Sri Lanka squad that last played the Tests.

Sri Lanka were handed a 15-run defeat by West Indies Select XI in a four-day warm-up game ahead of the Test series. Lahiru Kumara, Prabath Jayasuriya, Asitha Fernando and Sonal Dinusha bowled well across the two innings to bowl out the hosts for low scores at Coolidge Cricket Ground. Nishan Madushka was the lone Sri Lankan batter to get set in both the innings. Sooriyabandara, who has an eye-catching First-Class record, couldn’t help his cause to push for a Test debut. Alzarri Joseph warmed himself up with a couple of sizzling spells.

The stage is set then and can West Indies regain their lost glory in red-ball cricket, get back into winning ways and get a step closer to regaining the Sobers-Tissera Trophy, or will Sri Lanka continue to keep their dominance against the West Indies in the longest format? We will find all the answers when the Test match begins later today.

Head-To-Head.

West Indies and Sri Lanka have played against each other in 24 matches out of which West Indies have won 4 games while Sri Lanka has won 11 games. 9 games have ended in a draw. It is 8-2 in the visitors’ favour in the last 10 matches as well.

Pitch & Weather Report.

The surface at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium is traditionally hard and true, offering good carry and bounce. Seam bowlers dominate the opening sessions especially when there is cloud cover as they can exploit the early swing. As the match progresses, the pitch slows down, bringing spinners into the game. Batters who apply themselves and get set find batting easier as the ball softens. Teams winning the toss often elect to bat first to post a strong total, avoiding the pressure of chasing in the fourth innings when the pitch can take turn.

The temperature will be high around 28-30 degrees Celsius, making it relatively comfortable for the players. The conditions will be mostly partly sunny to partly cloudy with a high UV index. There is a minor chance of brief showers, but widespread, major weather interruptions that threaten the match are unlikely. Consistent easterly winds blowing around 18 to 26 km/hr, will provide good assistance for the fast bowlers.

Predicted/Probable Playing XIs of both sides.

Here, we will try and predict the probable playing XIs of both sides.

West Indies XI: John Campbell, Brandon King, Kavem Hodge, Shai Hope, Roston Chase (c), Justin Greaves, Joshua Da Silva (wk), Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales, Kemar Roach/Jomel Warrican.

Sri Lanka XI: Pathum Nissanka, Nishan Madushka, Dinesh Chandimal, Dhananjaya de Silva (c), Kamindu Mendis, Kusal Mendis (wk), Milan Rathnayake, Ramesh Mendis/Sonal Dinusha, Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Prabath Jayasuriya.

Key Players to watch out for in this clash.

Shai Hope: Shai Hope is West Indies’ best player when it comes to Test matches and ODIs. He is Mr. Consistent and Dependable for the hosts. Batting at 4, he can serve as the linkage between the top and middle order and can control the innings. The best batters often bat at 4, and Hope is no different and if West Indies are to have a chance, Hope needs to have a good series.

Alzarri Joseph: Back in the Test side after a year owing to injuries and workload management, Alzarri Joseph will be raring to go. He looked good in the warm-up game against Sri Lanka and will look to continue that form into the Test match proper. He will be an able ally to Kemar Roach and Shamar Joseph and if they get it right, they can hunt in pack against the Lankans.

Pathum Nissanka: Pathum Nissanka is one of the most consistent players for Sri Lanka across formats. Even in Tests, he is a key central figure. Batting at the top, Nissanka will hope to play out the new ball and then give the team a solid platform and a nice start. He would want to get a start and once he gets it convert it into something significant as that can aid Sri Lanka in a big way.

Asitha Fernando: One of the key figures for Sri Lanka is Asitha Fernando the pace bowler. Asitha is one of the most improved cricketers going around and he too will want to prove a point. He was good against Bangladesh and will want to continue that form into this series. Fernando is key and if he gets early wickets, then who knows West Indies might collapse.

Key Stats and Trivia to look forward to ahead of this clash.

  • Sri Lanka’s most recent Test series in the West Indies, in 2021, also featured two Test matches played at North Sound, Antigua.
  • Jayden Seales, if he plays, has a shot of getting to 100 Test wickets. He is currently sitting on 95.
  • Sri Lanka have only ever won two Tests in the West Indies in their history. The most recent was a seamer-dominated Test in Bridgetown, Barbados in 2018.

Predicted/Possible Outcome of the Match.

It’s tough to predict a winner between two unpredictable sides in Test Cricket. West Indies are struggling in this format while the Lankans are going to play their second series in this cycle. This match has all the makings of an interesting tussle. The overall history does not give too much of an advantage away. But looking at the current scenario, we will give a slight edge to the visitors Sri Lanka. They will start as favourites.

But West Indies at the their backyard is a tremendous team and one who can beat Sri Lanka. This series can go either ways and West Indies do have a genuine chance of upstaging Sri Lanka. But we will pick Sri Lanka as slight favourites and give them the slight edge at this stage. Let’s see how the game unfolds when the Test match starts later today.
