As South Africa has came out victorious in their first test match against India, most of the credit had to go towards their captain, who played brilliantly once again. With his name being Temba Bavuma, this is someone who has uplifted many Proteas fans and players’ spirits, while completely changing his nation’s previous choking habits. No matter what, he has been true, including numerous sledging attempts by people like Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, the captain has just been able to focus on one thing, moving the team across the line. With him understanding the true meaning of actions speak louder than words, he proved yet again under immense pressure in Indian conditions.
Being a true motivating factor that many used to mock at first, his name truly changed from being a laughing-stock in the cricketing world to being the first ever player to lead a side in beating Australia during an ICC final since 2010. Having got the mace for the initial time in South African cricket history, his unquestioned urge to win has helped this Proteas unit start defending the trophy really well.
As we saw how much they are missing when he missed both tests in a 1-1 tie with Pakistan, things are looking on the way up for a true underdog. It will be very interesting to see how he performs in the 2nd match, but before that, it is first important to give him praises for his decisions in that first one.
Batting Performance Combined With Lineup Created Really Changed This Match
When looking at this Proteas unit back in the first match, Bavuma had already created an edge for them early on by going for a lineup loaded with batting. Although he got criticized for not playing Dewald Brevis and picking Corbin Bosch over him, he understood that his selection was to get someone who could play a longer innings.
As Brevis could be a power threat, the captain realized he would start attacking from the first ball and get out quite quickly, so having a piece who knows how to control his shots was very impactful. Knowing that Bosch created a 25-run knock in that second innings, it was clear that his partnership with Bavuma towards the end was a clear game-changer.
The other thing was that instead of playing a pure pacer like Lungi Ngidi, he wanted to continue with Wiaan Mulder up top and let Marco Jansen be a batting threat down the order as well. Understanding this, South Africa’s 1 to 11 were able to put up a few decent innings, which changed the match and helped them get past 150 both times on an impossible ground.
Talking about Bavuma’s batting performance himself, this is someone who truly led the charge after having a really tough first innings. Knowing that conditions weren’t going to change and he had to acclimate to them, Temba ended up scoring a masterful 55 not out, while facing over 100 deliveries, something many other batsmen couldn’t do. Looking at it now, what made it more sensational was the fact that he kept doing this while wickets were falling around him.
Decision To Play Key Spinners Really Paid Off For Temba Bavuma & Proteas
Also, the other part where Temba Bavuma was absolutely fantastic was the selection of who he wanted to bowl because it was a very unpopular opinion at first. With many saying what happened to Kagiso Rabada as he was solid in the Pakistan series, Bavuma understood this ground only favored spinners, so he picked Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer. His most underrated move in this match was picking Harmer over Muthuswamy because he understood India’s left-handed batsmen would have trouble facing right-handed spin.
As India had done a similar thing with playing Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Jadeja, this Proteas unit also had three spinners, with Aiden Markram being an option.
Not only was this an absolute savior, but Harmer almost single-handedly one them the match with his star bowling performance that included 8 combined wickets. Taking out many big-time hitters for India, including Dhruv Jurel and Rishabh Pant, made a world of difference.
With Markram also getting overs, he made the best use out of them and was able to remove the Indians’ only thriving batsmen in Washington Sundar. Understanding Bavuma’s philosophy, with Maharaj also being impactful, his selection of one major pacer in Marco Jansen also paid off.
Seeing that many people were just purely experiencing spin, Temba tried to trap them by implementing fast-bowling as well, and his left-handed pacer delivered twice. Not letting Wiaan Mulder bowl much in these conditions, it was clear that the South African leader knew what he was doing and continued ramping up many bowlers’ confidence.
