Heading into the official final clincher match, this was a very tightly contested battle between two squads fighting to be in the T20I tri-series finals. With South Africa having won this match, it was extremely stressful for them since Namibia had their number over the past couple of contests they played against each other. As this is a huge relief for them after a couple days of stress, their next mission will be against Zimbabwe on Sunday in a thrilling final. Now that we know Bjorn Fortuin has been such a great captain who has gotten this young core to a very far place, it will be exciting to see if he can continue developing their skills and passion moving forward.
Meanwhile, this is quite the heartbreaker for Namibia because they were so close to pulling it together and creating a massive upset, but unfortunate situations led to them losing out once again. A unit that had so much hope after beating their long-wanted neighbors, they will now have to go back to the drawing board and figure out what is needed to win these crucial matches before a key T20 World Cup that is coming up. Now, despite having such a tough time trying to breathe after that loss, one thing they can look forward to this is the idea that Gerhard Erasmus still leads this side and should be a key leader that will help them continue moving ahead.
South Africa: Smashing Batting Effort Leads Them To A Massive Total
With the Proteas having been sent out to bat first, they didn’t miss the chance at all today, as their domination started from ball one. Opener Lhaun Dre-Pretorious was attacking on all cylinders today and seemed like he was a one-man machine from the left side, along with Connor Esterhuzien from the right. As these two stars went out for 156 combined runs and looked unstoppable, Esterhuzien was able to produce a career-best 88 runs, while hitting 14 combined boundaries. Smashing six fours, while also going for the big shots eight times, he was on a completely different mission, while being able to build confidence before being the first wicket fell at 156/1.
Even though today was not Dewald Brevis’s day right after him, it didn’t need to be, because this is someone who was doing most of the heavy lifting before this match. With that said, Rubin Hermann came in and created another very solid partnership with Pretorious, as they ended up scoring over 40 runs together to help this South African unit reach above 200. Now, with them reaching a moment in the game where it needed to finish off strong, Lhuan Dre was able to get past 100 for the first time ever in his career, while Rubin Hermann created 26 runs to get this side up to 227/4, before Eathan Bosch helped finish off the innings.
Namibia: Bowling Was Totally Tormented By Power
For the Namibian side, today’s bowling performance was a day to forget because it seemed like they were getting controlled in every facet. Left-handed star Ruben Trumpelmann had a real day to forget after giving up nearly 10 runs an over, and even though he did get a wicket in his own right, there just seemed to be no consistency in his deliveries.
Jack Brassell really struggled from the right-hand end as well, since he gave up nearly 20 per every six balls, while the captain lost confidence for him to bowl more than two overs. Max Heingo was in a similar situation with his lack of length and pace on deliveries, while leaking 36 runs in just three overs today.
Knowing that the pacers struggled like this in an immense fashion, it was a lot similar for the spinners as they couldn’t build on a strong performance from a day ago. With Gerhard Erasmus giving up almost a 10 economy and not really knowing what length to turn the ball at, this was a big first problem because he is someone known for setting the tone. JJ Smit was getting destroyed in a similar manner, as he got dismantled for 50 runs in his full four overs, while Namibia were expecting him to provide something special. Finishing it off, the only player who seemed to perform in some sort of strong ability today was Jan Balt, as he took two wickets and allowed less than 8 an over.
Namibia: Amazing Start To The Innings Helped In Their Close Chase
Despite not coming out on top today, the Namibian side put together a strong effort in order to complete a near-record chase. As they have shown that they have South Africa’s number in recent times, today was a day when they could create even longer history and nearly did. Opener Loureen Steenkamp was tremendous, as his blazing T20 start continued, since this is someone who created a massive 100+ run partnership with Jan Frylinck. Knowing that Frylinck was consistent, as always, he developed an intense 72-run score at a 200 strike rate, while also being a massive boundary-hitting piece, who had 11 combined ones throughout his innings.
Knowing that he was known for the fast starts as well, he helped them reach 119/1 with 5 massive sixes, while also being known for a special ability to develop shots into gaps. With Loureen Steenkamp continuing to go with Erasmus from the other side, it was looking like a great duo before Steenkamp had to retire out, as he finished with 61 runs and 5 classy boundaries. Showing his big-hitting ability as well with those three massive sixes, after having to leave, JJ Smit came in and delivered a massive blow before getting out. Closing it out, Erasmus and Ruben Trumpelmann, 21 runs with two boundaries, tried to develop a game-winning partnership, but ended up 11 runs short.
South Africa: Spinners And Pacers Edged Out The Victory
Looking at the Proteas side, one thing that stood out was that their bowlers were able to narrowly win this match and didn’t let the pressure get in their head. Despite struggles from Kwena Mahpka, as he gave an economy of 9.50 and no wickets in his four overs, and Eathan Bosch, who had similar stats from the right, it was only these two who were forced to bowl earlier on so the other bowlers could do the heavy lifting towards the end.
With Bjorn Fortuin understanding the reality that he was getting smashed, he was smart enough to make sure both him and other spinner, Nqaba Peter, were only doing four overs, while Nqobani Mokoena took two wickets of his own.
