Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe: The Lions Came Back From What Nearly Was About To Be A Massive Choke

With the 1st T20I between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe officially complete, this was a more than entertaining matchup as both sides had multiple opportunities to win it. Seeing that ” The Lions” came out victorious by 4 wickets, it seemed like they were cruising through the match before a sudden break in the middle made them lose momentum. Instead of continuing down that same path, this side stood strong and Kamindu Mendis took charge to help them win out the 1st T20 in this series. A moment that might be massive for their confidence going into Asia Cup play, it’s clear that captain Charith Asalanka really knows how to manage his side in pressure situations and form a perfect batting lineup that seals the deal.

This being a huge win for them, Zimbabwe also looked really strong on the other side and showed their continued improvement after struggling to win a match during their past Tri-Series. In a match which they almost nearly had in their pockets, this group wasn’t able to complete it out due to a vital few balls. Missing Sean Wiliams and Brendan Taylor due to injuries/rest, they were able to get help from a lot of newcomers who thrived in the domestic format prior to this. Captain Sikandar Raza had his guys playing really well and put them in great positions to succeed, while using his own batting plus bowling prowess to further enhance their side’s performance. Below are the key moments and players that made an impact during this interesting match.

Zimbabwe: Solid Innings That Were Helped Heavily By Top and Middle Order Batsmen

Looking at Zimbabwe’s batting today, they look pretty strong throughout and were able to create a score that they all seemed satisfied with. Finishing at 175 for the loss of 7 wickets, a major key to their success was Brian Bennett, as he looked unstoppable between 19 overs, despite people being removed around him. Hitting a knock of 81 from just 57 deliveries, he managed to score 12 boundaries and go at a strike rate of over 140 despite facing early pressure. Opening with him was Tadiwanashe Murumani, who was looking strong after hitting a good-looking boundary, but then got removed on a crucial catch taken by Nwaindu Fernando. A key partnership was between Bennett and Sean Williams, which went for 37 runs and helped them finish the powerplay very strongly before Williams got out on an LBW for 14 runs.

Having scored two exquisite fours and really looking in control early on, his wicket was unfortunate because Brian Bennett had also cruised through during this partnership. The 2nd biggest partnership for this unit was between Raza and Bennett, as they combined for 50 runs, while hitting a ton of boundaries and helping the run rate stay well over 8. For Sikandar Raza, he was able to score 28 runs of just 22 deliveries and show some great ground shots, while also going over the top for a massive six. Helping his side get over 100 runs,  then came the major combination where Brian Bennett and Ryan Burl really took on Sri Lankan bowlers for 51 runs in less than 6 overs. Before Burl had been clean-bowled and this partnership was broken, he added 17 runs during this period and continued helping Bennett be the aggressor on the other side. As soon as both departed within three balls, Tashinga Musekiwa added 11 vital runs during that final over to get Zimbabwe to a favorable score.

Sri Lanka: Bowlers Had A Very And Off Day During This Matches First Innings

For Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, it seemed very inconsistent because some pieces had dominant performances, while others were a bit slower in their progressions. Dusmantha Chameera was this group’s best pacer today since he picked up three vital wickets, including clean-bowling both Ryan Burl plus Brian Bennett. Known for coming up in clutch situations, he has shown this over and over again, while also keeping his economy at 7.50 today. Nuwan Thusara was really struggling as their other right-handed pacer today, since he gave up 47 runs and wasn’t able to create any pressure, despite taking one wicket. Key in giving up a last over full of runs, he was easily hit for several boundaries and kept missing his length.

Going into spinners, Maheesh Theekshana was very expensive in this match with his 9.50 economy, but also did a solid job of turning the ball and removed Sean Williams before letting him take control of this match. Seeing that his orthodox style of bowling really confused the way Zimbabwe batsmen could attack him in later overs, while Dusan Hemantha was a surprise factor in this matchup. A last-second call-up, he was able to remove one batsman as well and kept the runs minimal with his style of bowling. Allowing just a 7.00 economy in each of his 4 overs, he forced batsmen to hit shots that were more grounded than letting them launch it against him. Lastly, Kamindu Mendis was terrific with his ability to use both hands and didn’t let many boundaries pass by him due to confusion he created against numerous batsmen.

Sri Lanka: A Strong Start Turned Into A Near Choking Moment For This Batting Order

Pathum Nissanka had gotten off to an extremely strong start once again as he hit yet another 50+ knock. Scoring 55 of just 32 deliveries, his ability to find gaps as a right-handed batter were truly remarkable and helped him get Sri Lanka to 96/0 before getting caught by Tadiwanashe Murumani. Hitting four boundaries, his two sixes showed that the 27-year-old from Galle had Sri Lanka basically in the driver’s seat. With Kusal Mendis also scoring 38 on the other side, he played more controlled throughout his innings and hit four boundaries of his own in that partnership. After left-handed Kusal Perera had to leave at 102/2 with just 4 runs scored in 8 deliveries, things slowly started changing on the wrong side for this unit.

Losing Kusal Mendis right after Perera, many expected captain Charith Asalanka to take a big lead forward and help this unit, but the lefty was taken out for just one run on a simple catch. Nwanidu Fernando was removed, then afterwards, with just a score of 7 due to getting caught on a high-rising ball. Not really getting going, when Sri Lanka lost him, they were down to 125/5. Then came in Dasun Shanaka, who created a 17-run partnership with Kamindu Mendis. One that was looking dangerous to try sealing this match, it took a fantastic effort from Tony Munyonga to come down with a catch and cause Sri Lanka to go 6 down. Kamindu Mendis continued fighting for Sri Lanka with all different types of shots that led to fours and sixes, while he managed to finish with a 40+ knock. Getting help from Dusan Hemantha after hitting his 14 runs down the order, they were able to seal the deal on a 35-run partnership.

Zimbabwe: Bowlers Showed Up Towards The End But Lost In A Key Over

Zimbabwe’s bowling attack had a bunch of strong performances towards middle overs that nearly got them to a victory today before the ending went away from their favor. Left-handed pacer Richard Ngarava was fantastic from the left side in his four overs, as he took two big wickets and was economically fantastic. Just giving up 4.75 runs an over, it was vital to put a ton of pressure on Sri Lanka, given that Blessing Muzarabani had a tough outing today by giving up 41 runs. Although Muzarabani did have a massive wicket at the end of Nuwanidu Fernando, it felt like this was a day where batters took great advantage of him. Captain Sikandar Raza was great again with his spinning ability and created one clean-bowled opportunity, while also allowing just 26 runs during a full spell. Finally, Tintotenda Maposa looked amazing throughout the first three overs of this match, just giving up 7 in each, but then had an absolutely dreadful one during his 4th one. Giving up 26 in that over, it shifted the match towards Sri Lanka’s side and gave them an easy path to finish.
