South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd T20I Preview: Can The Proteas Finish Of This Series Quite Early Despite Playing With Backups?

South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd T20I Preview: Can The Proteas Finish Of This Series Quite Early Despite Playing With Backups?

With the 2nd T20I ahead of us between South Africa and Pakistan , their first head-to-head seemed to be completely dominated by one side, throughout. As this Proteas unit ended up winning by 55 runs, it was pretty clear all three phases of their side were far ahead, while creating tons of mismatches. A group that is currently without some of their key players, like Aiden Markram, David Miller, and Kagiso Rabada, it’s been very clear that this unit’s secondary squad has made a great impact so far. With Donovan Ferreira really turning himself into a great leader in such short time, he will hope to continue providing vital motivation for this side and grow into a more constant piece.

On the other side, Pakistan have continued struggling in this format and look fully checked out even though this series is not close to over. A group that has the potential to create a real fightback, it will all be down to their effort more than skill in these upcoming matches. Seeing that Babar Azam’s return was getting a lot of publicity, his performance didn’t match that, and it has become a clear leadership problem with this unit. Knowing that they ended up getting completely controlled in that final test match, captain Salman Ali Agha has been a major reason for this side’s struggles, as he continues being more focused on outside controversies than the games themselves.

South Africa: Batsmen Have Continued Proving Their Vital Depth And Continue Creating Runs

Looking at the South African batting attack, it is pretty clear that this unit is very deep and should be a threat once again. With opener Quinton De Kock looking like he is getting back into form after hitting 5 boundaries in his last match, he’s someone whose scored 2,608 runs throughout his career. Knowing that he continues being a key piece from the left end who can play with power and skill, opposite is Reeza Hendricks, who seems dominant once again with De Kock on the other side. Someone whose scored 18 half-centuries throughout his career and nearly about to cross the 2,500 run mark, it will be quite interesting to see if he can replicate a similar performance.

At one down, Tony De Zorzi scored 33 runs on debut and was looking stellar as he proved this format is meant for him. As someone who can mix up different-looking shots, it will be key for him to continue on that mark with Matthew Breetzke coming in next. Not being as successful, he will look to improve upon that 15.20 average and make an impact in the middle-order. With Dewald Brevis, 354 runs in 12 innings, being a key piece meant for this style of cricket, their captain in Donovan Ferriera, has proved to be a key power hitter as well. Down the order, Corbin Bosch and George Linde should provide some vital runs to close out this side’s innings.

South Africa: Pace Attack Should Really Keep Up A Great Performance With Some Solid Spin

For South Africa’s bowling attack, it’s clear their pacers will have a huge benefit during this match and support their single spinner. With Lungi Ngidi leading this side from the right end, he has continued bowling at a great pace and uses his height as an advantage to bowl a little bit wide. Someone who has taken 71 wickets during 51 career T20Is, he seems to have found a groove over the last couple of matches, as his economy continues going down. Seeing that their second key piece remains Lizaad Williams, who broke out last game with two wickets, this is someone who hopes to hit that same line and length in order to improve on his 22 T20I wickets.

With Nandre Burger coming in from the left end, he has been a little expensive with an economy over 8 in T20I cricket, but at the same time, it’s important to remember that he also has 6 wickets during his short time. Trying to become more of a run limiter, they will try bowling him in overs where he faces right-handed batsmen because that is one aspect that feels favorable for him. Corbin Bosch took a 4-wicket haul last match and is set to round this pace attack, while their main spinner is once again going to be George Linde, 27 wickets in 23 matches, who has turned into a piece from the left-end who can really create impactful turn on the ball.

Pakistan: Struggling Batting Unit Will Hope To Make Something Out Of Their Down Time

On Pakistan’s unit, their batting has turned out to be a massive liability and something they may have to fix quite rapidly. With opener Saim Ayub having been one bright spot for this unit after hitting 37 runs, he has been able to get his average near the 20 mark. On the other end, Shahibzada Farhan has struggled to break out of his 20-run scores and never really found a perfect patch that’s let him go deep into innings. With Babaer Azam going for a clean duck last match and not being able to change his perception in this style of cricket yet, Pakistan is looking for him to finally break out after facing several challenges in the short format.

Seeing that Salman Ali Agha has recently been on a downturn as well, he’s only been able to score 563 runs during his first 33 career innings. As his style doesn’t change much despite him having repeated struggles, things must change for him in order to keep that position. Looking at Usman Khan not being any sort of threat in the middle order, Pakistan will need to see something out of him because his average of 14.76 is not going to cut it at this current stage. With Faheem Ashraf and Mohammed Nawaz closing out this order, it will be important for them to lock in if this unit wants to put out a solid effort in which they can score a defendable total.

Pakistan: Bowlers Have Struggled In These Situations Like Usual

Lastly, when we talk about Pakistan’s bowling attack, it hasn’t really been a high point throughout this series as their struggles keep on building. With Shaheen Afridi having a very tough match, he didn’t seem to have a performance that makes him look like a 100+ wicket bowler in T20I cricket. Given the fact that he lost his pace ability and can’t hit the same line any longer, their other pace option in Naseem Shah has gotten into these similar struggles. Given up an economy well over 9, it hasn’t made it easy because their captain in Salman Ali Agha, has no longer become a vital spin threat. With Mohammed Nawaz being the only piece in form, it will be interesting to see how the rest of this unit does.
