Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has received an official reprimand for an incident on field on the second day of Test match. He became the third player to be sanctioned during the second match against India as earlier Yashasvi Jaiswal & Asitha Fernando were involved in a physical fight cum altercation.
Prabath Jayasuriya Breaches Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct
Prabath Jayasuriya was given an official reprimand following his dismissal in Sri Lanka’s first innings. He was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, relating to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”
Level 1 offences are the least serious category under the ICC Code of Conduct. Depending on the circumstances, a player can be given an official reprimand or can be fined up to 50 percent of the match fees, and one or two demerit points. In Jayasuriya’s case, alongside an official reprimand, he was also handed one demerit point to his official disciplinary record, this being his first offence in a 24-month period.
Prabath Jayasuriya’s Offence
The incident occurred after Prabath Jayasuriya’s dismissal on Monday. Jayasuriya’s frustration boiled over after he was dismissed off the final delivery by India’s Manav Suthar. As he walked back towards the pavilion, the Sri Lankan left-arm spinner struck the boundary wedges with his bat.
Prabath accepted the offence, thus there was no need for a formal hearing. He accepted the sanctions placed on him by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees after on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker, and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella levelled the charge.
Prabath Jayasuriya Becomes Third Player to be Hit by ICC Sanctions
The proposed sanctions mean Prabath Jayasuriya becomes the third player at Colombo to be sanctioned by the ICC following the penalties given to Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando for their altercation on Day 1 of the second Test.
That incident occurred in the 17th over of India’s first innings when Asitha Fernando dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal. The Indian opener walked towards Fernando and two exchanged words, after which they were involved in physical contact when Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal. In response, Jaiswal leant in, resulting in their heads making contact.
Meanwhile, India remain in control of the final Test of the series after declaring their first innings at 503 and forcing Sri Lanka into a follow on. Centuries from Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel ensured that the visitors put up a commanding total. The Indian bowlers struck early as well. The scoreboard on Day 4 reads 290 (follow on) and 229/6 for Sri Lanka as rain stops play.
