Wanindu Hasaranga has stepped down as Sri Lanka’s T20I captain after being appointed in the position for only six months. The decision is made at a time that is slightly early before a home series against India is due to be held.
Mixed Fortunes Under Hasaranga’s Captaincy
Again, Hasaranga has been dominating the nation in 10 matches among others including the, 2024 T20 World Cup. His captaincy period as the skipper of the team was not successful as this team got only six wins and four loses. This involved getting two series victories against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan on the home soil plus the dire iCC event failure in the Caribbean and the United States of America.
“Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” Wanindu Hasaranga wrote in his resignation letter to SLC.
Sri Lanka Cricket has accepted the resignation, and explained that Hasaranga fully intends to be involved in the side in the future.
Consistent Performance in LPL
He is employed with Kandy Falcons in the active 2024 Lanka Premier League (LPL) tournament where he enhances the team as a leader. He has achieved a total of 90 runs and bowler six wickets in total of six matches till date.
The pathetic performance in England reached its lowest when Sri Lanka Cricket released the programme of the home bilateral series against India. The tour which will entail three one day international and three T20 international matches is expected to commence from the 26th of July. The T20I series will be played in Pallekele where as the ODI series will be played in Colombo.
Jayasuriya Takes the Helm
Sri Lanka declared Sanath Jayasuriya its interim head coach for the bilateral series after Chris Silverwood’s departure.
