Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa said that the young opening duo of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal remind him of the legendary pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. India National Cricket Team batter Yashasvi Jaiswal achieved a massive feat in international cricket in 2024. The young batter became the first player to score 1000 runs this year across the two formats that he played. Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his aggressive approach with the bat in the game as he helped his team win the second game and take an unassailable lead of 2-0.

Yashasvi Jaiswal came up with the attacking mindset and made sure he took his team off to a flying start with the bat in the chase of 78 runs in 8 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal went after the bowlers right from the start as he smashed them all over the park. The left-hander, who scored 40 runs in the first game, carried his great touch with the bat, ensuring a powerful start for his team yet again.

Yashasvi Jaiswal ended with the innings of 30 runs off 15 balls. He batted with a strike rate of 200 and slammed 3 fours and 2 sixes. His impressive start with the bat helped India chase the target in just 6.3 overs and go 2-0 up in the three-match T20I series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill’s performance for India in 2024

Yashasvi Jaiswal in the 2024 has been sensational. The left-hander has scored 740 runs in Tests this year and is the leading run-getter in the format. He got all the runs in the Test series against England that took place earlier this year. In the T20Is, India’s opening batter has scored 283 runs with a strike rate of over 175.

Overall in the 13 games in 2024, Yashasvi Jaiswal has been a class apart with the bat. The opening batter has slammed 1023 runs at an average of 64 and a strike rate of around 104. The opening batter also has hit two centuries and 5 fifties.  With a lot of cricket still left for India National Cricket Team in the ongoing year, it won’t be a surprise if Yashasvi Jaiswal scores over 2000 runs in 2024.

Another Indian opener and touted to be the next Indian batting superstar Shubman Gill ,  who was appointed as India’s vice-captain in white-ball cricket ahead of the ongoing tour of Sri Lanka, has scored 539 runs from 20 T20Is at an average of 29.94 and a strike rate of 142.59.

However after seeing the duo of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal batting well vs Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in previous tour , former Indian player Robin Uthappa believes that the left right combination would make a good opening pair for India.

Robin Uthappa showered praises on Shubman Gill-Yashasvi Jaiswal opening pairing post SL T20I series

Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa feels that the new T20I opening pair of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal has shades of the iconic former duo of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. The dynamic youngsters have opened the innings together on several occasions and are close to cementing their spots despite the tough competition around them.

Gill and Jaiswal have emerged as the perfect left-right combination in the top order that Team India desired after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s T20I retirements. Opening the innings during the recent tours of Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, the pair have handed the Men in Blue a positive start more often than not.

Jaiswal has been the prime aggressor, taking on bowlers from the word go. On the other hand, Gill has also ramped up his scoring and is doing his part to keep the momentum going in the powerplay. His ability to play in multiple gears came in handy during the third T20I against Sri Lanka on July 30, as he top-scored with a 37-ball 39, helping India put on 137 on the board.

“I do see them, when I look at them they remind me of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar going out together, where their games kind of complimented each other. Their strategies complimented each other, that’s what I see when I see these two go out to bat together,” said Uthappa on Sony Sports Network (via India Today).

Gill and Jaiswal have struck a chord in the short time that they have opened the batting together. Their partnership has resulted in 516 runs at an average of 64.50, with two century and two half-century stands, in nine innings.

Robin Uthappa on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s ODI future

Jaiswal is also on the radar for being the long-term successor to Rohit Sharma at the top of the order in the ODI format. He has yet to make his ODI debut but is certainly in line, and Robin Uthappa cannot wait.

“I honestly feel when he (Jaiswal) gets that opportunity in ODI cricket, he will seal that spot so quickly because after Test cricket and T20I cricket, ODI cricket is going to be so much easier for him. Because he will feel like I have all the time in the world to be able to score runs,” Uthappa said on Sony Sports Network (via India Today).

Yashasvi Jaiswal does have an imperious List-A record. He has amassed 1511 runs in 32 innings at an average of 53.96, which includes five hundreds.
