Sandeep Patil, the former Indian cricketer has recently made a most unwarranted comment that current Indian team’s highly successful captain, Gautam Gambhir is unfit to coach the Indian team. Sandeep Patil Raises Questions on Gambhir’s Ability to Coach India
Gambhir who led the team to two IPL success with KKR has been named as a front-runner to be given the responsibility of taking over from Ravi Shastri as the team coach. Still, Patil feels that Gambhir is not experienced or qualified enough for the said job or position.
“I don’t think Gautam Gambhir’s job is to coach the Indian team,” Patil said in an interview. “He may have been a good player, but coaching is a different ball game altogether. You need to have the right temperament, the right experience and the right skills to coach a team like India,”
Talent Not Enough: Sandeep Patil Insists Coaching Skills are a Different Ball Game
A large number of ex-caps and critics have heavily criticized Patil’s statement and most of them are optimistic about Gambhir’s capability of coaching the national team. However, Patil largely remains unswerving on his view that, unlike the talents skills and the enthusiasm that Gambhir would bring into the dressing room, coaching is a different ball game that the latter may lack in.
“It’s not just about being a good player,” Patil said. “You need to have the ability to communicate effectively with your players, you need to be able to motivate them, you need to be able to make tough decisions under pressure. I’m not sure if Gambhir has those qualities,”
Fan Support Swells for Gambhir as Sandeep Patil’s Views Spark Debate
But, not Gambhir has opted not to respond to Patil’s comments, while his fans and supporters have risen in unison to defend the Cricketer on social media as a result of what they deem as unfair criticism. Some have opined that Gambhir has already had a taste of coaching in the IPL with Delhi Capitals and that being an ultracompetitive player he understands what it takes to win games at the highest level.
Still Patil does not budge from his opinion that Gambhir should not be made the captain of the Indian cricket team. I am not saying he is bad character or that he is not a good cricket player, that’s not what I wanted to say at all, Patil defended. Coaching on the other hand is a very different proposition altogether, you require a man who can made critical decisions on the field and that is something Gambhir lacks.
It is only going to get worse in the next weeks and months with more and more people chiming in on whether or not Gambhir is suitable for the job of a coach. One thing is however very clear, Sandeep Patil has instigated quite a debate as to what it takes to be coach of the Indian national team.
