James Coles shone with both bat and ball and turned the game on its head as it enabled Sunrisers Eastern Cape brush aside Joburg Super Kings by 61 runs enabling them not only to get a bonus point but also become the first team to officially qualify for the playoffs. James Coles came into bat when the team was in a spot of bother at 90/4 and made a breath-taking 61 off 34 balls to turn the game on its head and help the Eastern Cape post 178/5 with others chipping in as well.
While defending the score, James Coles chipped in with the ball too picking up 2/34 in 4 overs. While Senuran Muthusamy was the pick of the bowlers for Eastern Cape with figures of 3/26 in 4 overs and Marco Jansen too got a couple of wickets as the Joburg Super Kings were never in the chase and were bowled out for 117 in 18.1 overs their first game without regular skipper Faf du Plessis and are being captained by Donovan Ferreira.
Sunrisers have gone to 24 points from 8 games and are through to playoffs sitting in 1st place while the Super Kings are in 4th place with 17 points from 8 games, still in the playoffs race although things looking tough now.
James Coles & Quinton de Kock’s breath-taking fifties helped Sunrisers Eastern Cape post 178/5
Put into bat first, Jonny Bairtsow and keeper batter Quinton de Kock came out to bat for Sunrisers Eastern Cape while captain Donovan Ferreira had ball in hand for Jobrug Super Kings. The openers gave the Sunrisers a perfect rollicking start as both players attacked from either ends as the Super Kings were put under early strife. The duo put on 48 runs inside 5 overs and looked really good till Bairstow fell for 18 off 10 balls with 2 fours and one six to his name to Nandre Burger.
Matthew Breetzke came out to bat next. Breetzke did not last long as 3 runs were added to the score before he fell for 3 off 5 balls to Akeal Hosein. Jordan Hermann came in at the final over of powerplay. The powerplay score was 55/2 in 6 overs. Quinton de Kock was in the groove while Jordan got himself in as the duo tried to stitch a partnership. The duo added 38 runs for the 3rd wicket with de Kock scoring most of the runs before Hermann fell for 13 off 12 balls with 2 fours to his name to Donovan Ferreira yet again.
Captain Tristan Stubbs came out to bat next. Quinton had completed yet another half century and looked good for more before he was dismissed for 54 off 37 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes to his name to Ferreira. Eastern Cape were in a slight spot of bother at 90/4 in 10.5 overs when James Coles joined Tristan Stubbs the captain in the middle. Coles was quickly off the blocks and played his vast array of shots. Stubbs complimented him from the other end and played the role of an anchor player.
But it was the James Coles show as the Englishman put on a show at St. George’s Park. He tore apart the Super Kings bowlers and put them under huge pressure. He came in at the completion of 11th over and stayed till the end doing severe damage on the Super Kings. Stubbs was happy to rotate the strike. The duo put on a match defining 88 for the 5th wicket in 55 balls in which Coles scored 61 off them in 34 balls as the Eastern Cape had a big finish in the death overs.
James Coles completed his half-century and went to 61 off 34 balls with 10 fours to his name before he fell off the final ball of the innings to Wiaan Mulder for an excellent knock. Stubbs remained unbeaten on 23 off 22 balls with one boundary to his name as he rotated the strike in this partnership. The Sunrisers Eastern Cape finished with 178/5 in 20 overs with 6 extras given by the fielding side.
It was a hard day for the Joburg Super Kings bowlers. Captain Donovan Ferreira was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/25 in 4 overs. Akeal Hosein finished with 1/23 in 4 overs. Nandre Burger finished with 1/37 in 4 overs. Wiaan Mulder finished with 1/11 in 1 over. Richard Gleeson finished with 0/47 in 4 overs. Imran Tahir also had a bad day as he finished with 0/33 in 3 overs. That meant that Joburg Super Kings needed 179 runs to win off 20 overs.
Senuran Muthusamy & James Coles shine as Sunrisers Eastern Cape complete an easy win and a place in playoffs
Chasing a mammoth 179 for the win, James Vince and Rivaldo Moonsamy the keeper batter walked out to bat for Joburg Super Kings while Marco Jansen had ball in hand for Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The Super Kings courtesy of James Vince got off to a fast start in the first 3 overs amassing 30 runs. The opening duo put on 31 for the first wicket inside 3.3 overs before Moonsamy fell for 10 off 11 balls with one six to his name to James Coles.
Michael Pepper came out to bat next. He was very slow off the blocks as the duo played out the rest of the powerplay. The powerplay score was 39/1 in 6 overs. The duo of Pepper and Vince put on 15 more runs to the tally before Vince fell after getting a start scoring 30 off 23 balls with 3 fours to his name to that man James Coles yet again. Dian Forrester came out to bat next and was quickly off the blocks as Pepper batted slowly.
The duo added another 13 runs to the score before Forrester fell in the 9th over for 11 off 4 balls with one four and one six to his name to Senuran Muthusamy as the Super Kings was now reduced to 59/3 in 8.3 overs. Matthew de Villiers came out to bat next joining Pepper in the middle. The duo tried to rebuild things for the Super Kings and added 19 runs for the 4th wicket before Matthew was unfortunately run out for 9 off 7 balls with one boundary to his name as Coles was involved in this dismissal as well.
Wiaan Mulder came out to bat next joining Pepper in the middle. The collapse had now well and truly begun for the Super Kings. 8 more runs were added to the score before Mulder fell for 3 off 5 balls to Muthusamy. Captain Donovan Ferreira finally came out to bat next. Super Kings had lost half their side for 86 in 12.1 overs and in the same over for the addition of a single run, Pepper fell for 21 off 24 balls with one four to his name to Muthusamy again as he picked two wickets in the over.
Akeal Hosein came out to bat next with the score at 87/6 in 12.3 overs to join his captain Ferreira in the middle. The game was as good as over now but the Super Kings tried to get close to the target as Net Run Rate matters a lot in these tournaments. Ferreira and Hosein built a small partnership of 19 runs for the 7th wicket before Akeal fell for 10 off 11 balls with one six to his name. Nandre Burger came out to bat next.
A run was added to the score before captain Ferreira fell for 11 off 9 balls with one boundary to his name as his dismissal sealed the fate of the match as a bonus point was definitely on the cards now. Ferreira fell to Jansen. Imran Tahir came out to bat next. Runs came in singles as the duo added another 8 runs to the score before Burger fell for 7 off 8 balls with one four to his name to Anrich Nortje. Richard Gleeson was the last man walking out for the Super Kings.
Just one run was added to the score as at the start of the 19th over, Gleeson fell for 1 off 4 balls to Marco Jansen as the Super Kings were bowled out for 117 in 18.1 overs and were badly beaten by the Eastern Cape who are flying high now. Just 2 extras given by the fielding side.
Senuran Muthusamy was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa with figures of 3/26 in 4 overs. James Coles chipped in with the ball with figures of 2/34 in 4 overs. Marco Jansen finished things off with 2/33 in 3.1 overs. Adam Milne finished with 1/10 in 3 overs while Anrich Nortje bowled an excellent spell and finished with 1/13 in 4 overs. So, Sunrisers Eastern Cape won by 61 runs to get the bonus point and stay at the top of the points table to qualify for the playoffs officially. James Coles was awarded the Player of the Match.
What Lies Ahead
Next-up the bandwagon moves to Supersport Park in Centurion for Match 25 of SA20 2026 where Pretoria Capitals will host Paarl Royals in Match 25 of the season from 15th January, Thursday 2026 at 9 PM IST onwards. It is 2nd playing third as Pretoria Capitals have 20 points from 8 games while Paarl Royals have 19 points from 7 games a point behind them and a game in hand. A mouth-watering clash awaits us weather permitting in the Highveld.
