Rubin Hermann stood tall and produced the goods as his unbeaten half-century helped Paarl Royals pull off a thrilling 6-wicket win off the final ball of the game against Durban Super Giants at Boland Park in Paarl. Rubin Hermann looked a determined player and came clutch in a crunch situation alongside Sikandar Raza. Paarl Royals put Durban Super Giants into bat first and the visitors posted a competitive 186/5 on the back of an impressive 66 from captain Aiden Markram while others down the order chipped in as well.
Chasing 187 for the win, Paarl Royals lost their two openers relatively early but they rode on Daniel Lawrence’s 63 and Rubin Hermann’s unbeaten 65 to inch towards the target with the latter staying till the end. Captain David Miller fell cheaply but Sikandar Raza came good under pressure and hit a maximum off the last ball of the match to seal the deal for the home side as this was the highest score chased in Paarl. With this win, Paarl Royals move to 3rd in points table while Durban are 5th and all but out of reckoning now for playoffs.
Aiden Markram’s Impressive Half-Century helps Durban Super Giants post 186/5
Put into bat first, new opening pair came out to bat for Durban Super Giants as Sunil Narine came out with captain Aiden Markram. Bjorn Fortuin had ball in hand for Paarl Royals. The openers gave the Super Giants a fast start as Narine was quickly off the blocks and attacking the bowlers while Markram played his way by getting himself in. The duo put on 33 runs inside 3 overs with Narine scoring 22 of them before the Trinidadian fell for a quick 22 off 11 balls with 3 fours and one six to his name to Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Jos Buttler the man in form strode out to the middle next. But Buttler did not hang around for long as after addition of 5 more runs to the score, Buttler fell for 3 off 9 balls to Bjorn Fortuin as he was stumped coming down the track. David Bedingham walked out to bat with the score at 38/2 in 5 overs and in need of a partnership. The powerplay score was 43/2 in 6 overs for Durban Super Giants, a steady start but had lost two early wickets.
The duo of Markram and Bedingham started to build a rebuilding stand and slowly increase the run rate. Markram was the aggressor of the two while Bedingham played second fiddle. The duo played out the middle phase of the game easily and set things up for the end overs. The duo put on 76 runs off 57 balls with Bedingham going less than run a ball while Markram was the aggressor and scored the bulk of the runs as he completed his half-century as well.

They played the team into the death overs phase when the 76-run stand was broken when Bedingham fell for 25 off 26 balls with one six to his name to Mujeeb yet again. Keeper batter Heinrich Klaasen came out to bat next and was quickly off the blocks while Markram continued his good run as well. Markram and Klaasen added another 13 runs to the score when the big wicket of Markram fell for 66 off 46 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes to his name to Mokoena. Liam Livingstone came out to bat next with the score at 127/4 in 16.1 overs.
Klaasen and Livingstone then put on a show in the death over phase as the bowlers went the distance a little bit. Livingstone came out and went all guns blazing while Klaasen was playing his normal T20 innings as the attack and impetus came from both the ends. The duo put on 52 runs a half century stand off just 22 balls with Livingstone attacking more than Klaasen. With two balls to go in the innings, Mokoena got some reward as he dismissed Klaasen for 29 off 18 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes to his name.

Evan Jones came out to bat next. He got off the mark before Livingstone hit a last ball maximum to finish the innings at 186/5 in 20 overs. Livingstone remained unbeaten on 32 off 10 balls with 1 four and 4 sixes to his name while Evan Jones was unbeaten on 1 off 1 ball. 8 extras given by the fielding side.
It was a mixed bag bowling performance from the Paarl Royals bowlers. Mujeeb Ur Rahman was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/22 in 4 overs. Nqobani Mokoena was very expensive as he finished with 2/56 in 4 overs. Bjorn Fortuin finished with 1/32 in 4 overs. Sikandar Raza finished with 0/29 in 3 overs. Asa Tribe finished with 0/17 in 2 overs. Delano Potgieter finished with 0/21 in 2 overs while Daniel Lawrence finished with 0/8 in 1 over. It meant that the hosts Paarl Royals needed 187 runs to win in 20 overs for a record chase at Boland Park.

Chasing 187 for the win, Lhuan dre Pretorius and Asa Tribe opened the batting for Paarl Royals while Eathan Bosch had ball in hand for Durban Super Giants. The Royals also got off to a brisk courtesy of Pretorius as he was quickly off the blocks while Tribe hardly got strike and played second fiddle. The duo put on 23 runs for the first wicket inside 3 overs before Tribe was dismissed for 3 off 5 balls as he was cleaned up by David Wiese. Daniel Lawrence came out to bat next.
Lawrence was quick to get going while Pretorius stayed with him. The duo added 13 runs for the second wicket before Pretorius fell for 18 off 14 balls with one four and one six to his name to Eathan Bosch. Rubin Hermann came to the crease with the score at 38/2 in the 5th over. Hermann was quickly off the blocks and alongside Lawrence started to form a partnership. The powerplay score was 52/2 in 6 overs for the Royals.
The duo aced the middle phase of the game as both complimented each other well. At times, Lawrence was the aggressor and at times Hermann. Both equally contributed in the partnership and took their side back on track and in a winning position. The duo put on a match defining 106 runs in over 10 overs, 61 balls to be precise with Lawrence scoring a bit more than Hermann. This brought the Royals back as they reached 142 inside 15 overs before Lawrence fell for 63 off 41 balls with 2 fours and 4 sixes to his name.

Captain David Miller came out to bat next as the finisher in the death overs. But Miller did not last long as after just 3 runs were added to the score, the captain was dismissed for 2 off 3 balls to Sunil Narine. Sikandar Raza came to the crease with the Royals at 145/4 in 15.3 overs still requiring 42 runs off 27 balls with 6 wickets in hand. The death overs phase had come.
Hermann dropped anchor and played through the innings while Raza shifted the momentum and started hitting the big shots. Raza known as the finisher took the challenge head on and hit some lusty blows while Hermann was complimenting him well as Hermann reached his half-century and went beyond that. Raza was the one who handled the situation well and played the role of the finisher in the death overs phase.

The game went down to the wire and Hermann took a single off the penultimate game of the contest to leave Sikandar Raza on strike with 2 needed off 1 balls. Raza connected and flicked it away over midwicket for the maximum and spark wild celebrations in the crowd. Paarl Royals had achieved the highest successful chase at Boland Park in SA20 games as 187 was chased down. The Royals finished with 191/4 in 20 overs with Hermann unbeaten on 65 off 45 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes to his name while Raza remained unbeaten on 27 off 13 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes to his name. 13 extras given by the fielding side.
The Super Giants bowlers tried their best but could not end up on the winning side. Eathan Bosch was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/29 in 4 overs. Sunil Narine chipped in with 1/30 in 4 overs. David Wiese finished with 1/35 in 3 overs and the last ball maximum was hit off his bowling. Simon Harmer finished with 0/38 in 4 overs. Noor Ahmad finished with 0/36 in 4 overs. Liam Livingstone’s only over went for 19 runs. So, Paarl Royals win by 6 wickets to go to 3rd in points table in a thriller. Rubin Hermann was awarded the Player of the Match award.

Next-up in SA20 2026 is Match 24 of the tournament as Sunrisers Eastern Cape face-off against Joburg Super Kings live from St. George’s Park in Gqueberha in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday 14th January 2026 from 9 PM IST onwards.
