Pitch Report and Toss

Pitch Report – Looks like the pace is up and the ball will come onto the bat nicely, quips Allan Donald, in his pitch reading. ‘It’s dry, hopefully it’ll skid under lights, I’ve played in the Highveld for the last 10 overs, here, the conditions do change’, says Junior Dala. ‘Bit of rain around in the last week, interesting how this plays’, says Dwaine Pretorius. ‘It’s a good wicket, bit more grass than normal, it’s a bit drier than the last wicket, it will not turn a lot’, says Heinrich Klaasen

Toss : Joburg Super Kings skipper Faf Du Plessis won the toss and chose to bat with  Gerald Coetzee and Imran Tahir back in the playing XI. Keshav Maharaj who also wanted to bowl first made one change in the playing XI bringing in  Prenayan Subrayen in place of Dwaine Pretorius

Quinton De Kock’s half century in vain as Donovan Ferreira’s all round show guides JSK to 28 runs win over DSG

The Joburg Super Kings (JSK) spin trio of Tabraiz Shamsi, Donovan Ferreira, and Imran Tahir delivered a commanding performance to secure a 28-run victory over Durban’s Super Giants in their SA20 clash at Kingsmead on Tuesday. Their combined effort dismantled the hosts’ batting lineup, propelling JSK to their second consecutive win of the third season.

Chasing JSK’s total of 169/7, the Super Giants faltered despite Quinton de Kock’s valiant knock of 55 off 45 balls. De Kock held one end steady with five boundaries and two sixes, but wickets tumbled around him. Shamsi, Donovan Ferreira, and Tahir shared five wickets, ensuring the home side fell short, bowled out for 141 in 18 overs.

The match saw a moment of brilliance from the 45-year-old Tahir, who dived spectacularly at point to catch Wiaan Mulder off a reverse sweep. The catch galvanized the visitors, who turned the tide decisively. Super Giants’ middle-order batter Quinton de Kock played a lone hand of 55 (45 balls, five boundaries and two fours) to keep his team afloat in pursuit of JSK’s 169/4.

The Super Giants were well-placed at 99/4, with De Kock and Heinrich Klaasen threatening to take the game away. Klaasen, striking a quick 29 off 17 balls, looked dangerous until Matheesha Pathirana dismissed him with a leg-side catch at the end of the 12th over. From there, the collapse was swift, with JSK’s spinners tightening the noose.

Heinrich Klaasen (29 of 17 balls, with two fours and two sixes) was building up momentum by striking Matheesha Pathirana for a couple of boundaries and a six, but the Sri Lankan international exacted revenge by having the SA20 Season 2 MVP caught down the leg side with the final ball of the 12th over to set in the collapse.

The JSK spin trio of Tabraiz Shamsi (2/18), Donovan Ferreira (2/15) and Imran Tahir (1/29) combined in perfect tandem to propel the visitors to a 28-run victory at Kingsmead, while the Capitals seamers were influential in their six-wicket bonus point win over the defending champions. Despite the defeat, Quinton de Kock was named Player of the Match for his gritty innings.

Presentations and Road Ahead

Faf Du Plessis the winning JSK skipper said : Last year, the wicket was spin heavy. It looked like a dry surface. I was surprised it was sticky. May be because of the moisture. We thought to be in the game, we needed 160. Two sixes from Gerald at the end were huge. Donovan was hard to hit. Then the spinners came in and picked the wickets.

Donovan has been working hard on his own bowling. Always handy to have one of your top five or six who can give you overs. Very happy to come here and win. To come here, we are very very happy to top the table. We were inconsistent with our home and away performances last year.

Keshav Maharaj the losing DSG skipper said : We got the balls in the right areas. If I am hyper critical, we left 15 runs there. Time to reassess and go back to the drawing board. It happens in T20 cricket. Naveen is a champion bowler. We can better in certain periods. The character needs to come through. Glimpses of lot of positives.

Quinton De Kock Player of the Match for his half century said : As the innings progressed, it got harder. To be honest, I thought I won’t be able to do it. I have done it on much flatter wickets. Wasn’t able to take on the bowler. It became impossible to hit.

JSK have managed to defend 169. And that too with aplomb. Klaasen tried to take it away. He was strangled down leg. QDK tried to wage a lone battle at the end but also fell well short. In the end, LSG won by 28 runs. Chasing 170, the Durban unit were reduced to 51 for 4. But QDK and Klaasen took them forward before the latter fell.

Earlier, JSK huffed and puffed to 169 as they never really got going with the highest score in the innings being only 38. Durban looked like they will chase it down when Klaasen was in full flow. But his departure just changed the fortunes before QDK reignited the hopes. However, even that was short lived. The Super Kings will look to maintain their form, while the Super Giants must regroup and address their middle-order struggles.
