Fresh off a convincing win in their previous game, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) were given a reality check by the Orange Army SRH as they completed the double over RR this season. Pat Cummins was back leading the side, and the team responded by first winning the toss and electing to chase and chased it easily. RR had their moments early on with teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi entertaining everyone with an unbelievable ton. But they made too many unforced errors to lose the game in the 19th over in a 230 chase. There were areas that they missed out on, and we will list three of them for you.
Continuous underperformance of Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer dented RR’s progress with the bat
RR were told to bat first, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi put on a show for everyone by first smashing 4 sixes in the opening over of the contest en route to his second ton, which he got in 36 balls. Yashasvi Jaiswal went early. Dhruv Jurel gave good support to the teenager and put on 112 for the second wicket. RR looked good to get more, but the middle order is the real Achilles heel for them. It hasn’t been performing and, on a flat deck in Jaipur, they flattered to deceive.
Riyan Parag came and went for 7 off 9 balls. Parag now has 88 runs in 8 innings. Shimron Hetmyer, another underperformer, scored 11 off 10 balls. These two really used up deliveries, and the momentum was sucked out of the innings. From the start, they had RR should have got to 240-250. But making 228 meant they left a few runs out there in the middle. The prime culprits for this were Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer. Riyan continues to underperform and needs to get runs quickly before it is too late. He is lucky that RR are doing decently in IPL 2026 at this stage.
Shimron Hetmyer batted at Number 3 in the World Cup, but here, batting at 5 has meant batting out of position and as a finisher. This has plagued him as he has not got going in this tournament. He is struggling with timing and runs if we are being brutally honest. Both Parag and Hetmyer need to pull up their socks and help RR drive home the advantage to get the big total. Overdependency on the top 3 has to stop from RR’s point of view.
Multiple dropped catches and shoddy ground fielding cost RR the match
RR were shoddy on the field. Ground fielding was not up to the mark, while the catching was an issue as well. They were defending 228 on a flat deck and needed to hold their catches. Travis Head was dropped first ball by keeper Jurel, but that did not prove costly at all as he fell in the first over. The partnership that took the game away from RR was the Ishan Kishan-Abhishek Sharma partnership.
The duo tore apart the RR bowling from start to finish. But RR had their chances of dismissing both the batters, but catches were being dropped one after the other. Abhishek was given reprieves as he made 57, while Ishan, fresh from being relieved of his captaincy, made 74 off 31 balls. But both had good fortune as fortune favours the brave.
Even Ravindra Jadeja dropped a sitter, and that really summed up their fielding display. There was a record 16 catches that were dropped in the whole day yesterday in both the matches that we had. RR were committed to making unforced errors, and SRH took full toll of it and eventually won the game easily. It is an understatement to say that RR’s fielding has to improve by leaps and bounds if they want to win matches, as with so many dropped catches, you cannot win the match. This is the harsh reality.
Tactical errors by Riyan Parag while defending the score compounded the problems of RR
Riyan Parag had a forgettable night with the bat yet again. But last night, he had a forgettable and questionable night as captain of the team. It was fine when the innings started, as Archer and Burger had to start things off. But as the innings wore on, he started using everyone and is obsessed with match-ups. Match-ups are important, we get that, but Parag always overanalyses things out there. This is his biggest drawback as captain. He is learning and must learn quickly.
When it came to using the spinners, he was clueless, to say the least. He used the pacers up front, which could be a strategy; no issues with that. But then, he first brought himself on for an over and went for 12 runs. Then Donovan Ferreira came onto the attack and went for 14 runs, although he picked up a wicket. Riyan went to his two premier spinners very late, as Ravi Bishnoi as spinner, bowled an over for 16 runs, and Ravindra Jadeja bowled an over for 11 runs.
In fact, due to match-ups, Jadeja sometimes hasn’t bowled at all. Baffling tactics from Parag and the team management as well. So many tactical errors meant the team was always on the back foot. SRH batters took full advantage of it and took the attack to the opposition. Parag must go back and reflect on where he is going wrong and come back stronger, as things are getting tight in the points table for them. It was RR making those unforced errors rather than SRH playing well. Yes, SRH played well, kudos to them as well.
