It is time for the battle of sixes at Hyderabad as the Punjab Kings (PBKS) will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) tonight. Both teams are powerhouses and have been consistent in the IPL 2026, Punjab more so with 13 points in 9 matches & SRH with 12 points in 10 matches.
Even though SRH and PBKS have had its equal share of losses in the tournament, both teams have shown terrific resilience throughout the tournament. The Rajiv Gandhi stadium will gear up for another high-scoring clash between two of the most destructive teams of IPL. Even though Hyderabad and Punjab have a powerful batting line-up the recent struggles make this match spicier and the teams determined to get back to their winning habit.
Head to Head
Punjab and Hyderabad suffered heavy defeats in their last matches. Hyderabad, after being in a good position against KKR, slipped to 165 all out while Punjab were shocked by Rajasthan’s Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The head-to-head record sits in Hyderabad’s favour; 17 matches won by SRH while Punjab have only 9 matches to its name, and even at Hyderabad, it is comfortably a 9-1 ratio for the orange army. Surely, the orange army have had the better against Punjab Kings, but tonight, Shreyas Iyer’s side will aim to turn it around.
The Hyderabad pitch is yet another batting-friendly pitch, and the bowlers have no respite. In general, all the pitches in the IPL this year have been tailored to suit the batting and this is the primary reason for the teams scoring beyond 250 and chasing beyond 250. There is a disadvantage as the actual contest between a batsman and a bowler is lost, and t20 has simply become a business, as Muttiah Muralitharan said. Although, to bring the balance and enjoy the game in true sense, the pitch conditions must be equally divided.
Battles to watch out for
Harshal Patel against Shreyas Iyer will be a good battle to look out for. The southpaw has beaten Shreyas Iyer and got him thrice in the IPL, whereas Iyer has a meek record against him, scoring just 34 runs at a strike rate of 179. Tonight, Iyer will be up against Harshal but SRH will be wary of the fact that Iyer scored a useful 69 the last time the teams played together in this edition, and PBKS won the match chasing 220.
For Punjab, the batting has been sensational, and it has almost carried the team throughout the IPL. Punjab’s batting might be one of the key reasons for the team to be sitting at the top with 13 points. Yes, the scoring rate is also given equal credit but the batting has simply been out of this world.
Another significant battle from Hyderabad’s point of view is Arshdeep with the new ball. Although still fresh, Arshdeep Singh has serious pace and good control over swing. Arshdeep picked up 3 wickets in the powerplay against Mumbai and has evolved as a crucial powerplay specialist for PBKS.
Arshdeep has troubled Travis Head and Ishan Kishan, picking Head four times and Kishan thrice this IPL. Also, Chahal would be brought in early by Shreyas, knowing Ishan Kishan’s recent vulnerability against spin. Kishan’s strike rate drops to mid-130 against spin while his strike rate against pace is 145 which shows how much he hates batting against spinners.
Positives for PBKS and SRH
Batting has really been the base for these teams and the top three have scored beyond fifty in almost every match. Having said this, the bowling of Punjab has been at the wrong end where they have not picked up wickets at crucial phases of the game. Taking the Rajasthan game as an example, Punjab could not stop the onslaught by Suryavanshi which put the bowlers under pressure.
Punjab’s bowling inside the powerplay has been a talking point and something that it would look to improve in the remaining games. While for SRH the lower middle order is relatively inexperience. The likes of Salil Arora, Nitish Kumar Reddy have fortunately been lucky to not go in early when the situation is dicey.
It has been a wonderful journey so far for SRH and Punjab and both have been led brilliantly and managed brilliantly. Punjab who is at the top of the table with 13 points needs to win two of their remaining games to qualify but, it must not relax now as one wrong step will lead to a complete shift in its position. Punjab will look to stay at the top while SRH will look to move closer to finish in the top 2.
Most likely winner of the match
Both teams are captained exceptionally well, but it looks like Hyderabad will knock off Punjab today. Looking at the home record and the overall dominance over Punjab, it will be difficult for Punjab to even sneak a win.
