Last night at Dharamshala was unforgettable and gave goosebumps to the crowd. Mumbai Indians (MI) won an epic thriller against Punjab Kings on the back of Tilak Varma‘s half-century. Batting at number 4, Tilak Varma scored 75 from just 33 balls, a sublime knock under pressure which included 6 sixes and 6 boundaries. Batting with a strike rate of 227, Tilak remained unbeaten throughout the chase and was awarded the Player of the Match.
MI are very cleverly pressurising the top four teams by making it difficult for them to easily qualify for the playoffs and Punjab Kings tasted it yesterday. Even though PBKS is placed fourth on the table with 13 points, it is still difficult for them and Saturday’s game against RCB is now a do-or-die game.
One positive for MI yesterday was that it played as a unit, and after long time in this tournament, it actually felt like MI was playing to win. Jasprit Bumrah led the team yesterday for the first time in the absence of both Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya (*reasons unknown) and achieved the first win as an MI captain. It was an emphatic victory by the boys in blue, so let us break down the performance of MI –
Win the toss and bowl first, Half battle won
Dharamshala saw plenty of rain one night before the match, due to which the atmosphere eventually became conducive for the bowlers. The cool breeze also helped to produce a lot of early swing. The pitch, however, surprised everyone with its slow nature because if one noticed the wickets of the PBKS batsmen, most of the batsmen were deceived by the lack of pace. Bowling a lot of slower balls and keeping the pace between mid-130 helped MI. In fact, Shardul Thakur in his mid-match press briefings, emphasised the slower balls.
Shardul Thakur’s attack with the ball
Shardul Thakur picked up his second four-wicket haul in this IPL and wreaked havoc on the opposition. He also took the wicket of his Ranji teammate Shreyas Iyer. It was a peach of a ball to Iyer, which deceived him with pace. 129kmph which clipped the off stump, leaving Iyer in awe of the delivery. Shardul used all the tricks in his box to perfection and reaped rewards.
Shardul’s secret to his success was his staunch self-belief and his ability to read the pitch conditions perfectly. Shardul mixed up the pace brilliantly and stuck to his line and lengths. Shardul’s spell of 4 overs, four wickets, and 39 runs was an outstanding display of bowling. Along with Iyer, Shardul also picked up the crucial wickets of Prabhsimran Singh, who scored 57 from just 32 balls and was the lone scorer in the batting, Suryansh Shedge, and Marco Jansen.
Firm Opening Stand
Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton added 60 for the opening partnership, which laid the foundation. Even though Rohit struggled in the innings, often mistiming the shots, Ryan scored a brisk 48 from 23 balls, smashing 4 sixes and 4 fours, taking pressure off Rohit. Obviously, the wicket’s nature stopped him from playing his natural game, but the fans were lucky to witness one Rohit Sharma pull-shot. In the sixth over, Rohit pulled Xavier Bartlett on a good length ball, and the crowd found its voice.
Rickelton and Rohit put a fifty partnership in the power play. This was another secret to MI’s success: building a strong opening partnership, as this was the fourth successful partnership between Rohit and Rickelton this season, and they have been a predominant pair for MI. Another reason for MI winning was the apt exploitation of the wicket. MI bowlers used the condition to their advantage, bowling more slower balls.
Qualification in Threat for PBKS?
Punjab has lost five games in a row now and looks completely in disarray to qualify for the playoffs. A team that started IPL with a bang is now in danger of losing its qualifier spot. Clearly, the fielding from Punjab has been below-par, and the bowlers are unable to defend totals with poor bowling. Even yesterday, the over from Marco Jansen changed the dimension of the game completely. The 18th over was crucial for Punjab, but Marco Jansen gave away 22 runs in that over, and the game drifted in favour of MI.
The question now is whether PBKS is in danger of being disqualified? Well, Brad Haddin has clarified that they must win the next two games to be in contention, but it is not easy because PBKS will play against RCB this Saturday, who are already in red-hot form. King Kohli would be dying to score yet another century against the previous year’s finalists.
A couple of positives for PBKS from the game would be Prabhsimran’s knock, scoring two fifties against MI this season. Azmatullah Omarzai’s late blitz of 38 from 17 balls with four sixes powered PBKS to a competitive total. Yet another positive for Punjab is their Net run-rate, but CSK can overtake PBKS if it wins the next match.
Tata IPL 2026 is reaching a crucial juncture. PBKS are stuck on 13 points in 12 games, having lost five games. Meanwhile, RR and CSK will try to catch up with the Punjab Kings to stay alive. What will happen next? Can Punjab qualify, or will CSK crash the party as tonight is their match against LSG.
