South Africa Women produced one of their most impressive performance of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as they defeated India Women by six wickets, and at the heart of the victory was Marizanne Kapp. The experienced all-rounder delivered a complete performance, first making life difficult for India’s batters and then producing a sensational unbeaten innings during the chase. Marizanne Kapp‘s contribution of 2 wickets for 27 runs and an unbeaten 81 off 45 balls proved to be the difference between the two sides in a high-pressure match.
Marizanne Kapp’s Smart Bowling Restricts India Despite Aggressive Start
India began aggressively, with Shafali Verma attacking from the start and scoring 31 runs from only 15 deliveries. Alongside Smriti Mandhana, she helped India race to 30 runs before Marizanne Kapp provided the first breakthrough. Marizanne Kapp dismissed Mandhana for 17, preventing India from building a dominant opening partnership.
The South African all-rounder continued to apply pressure throughout her four-over spell. While India’s middle order tried to maintain momentum through Harmanpreet Kaur’s 24 and Deepti Sharma’s valuable 29, Kapp kept things tight by varying her pace and hitting disciplined lengths. Marizanne Kap’s second wicket came in the death overs when she removed Richa Ghosh for 15, a dismissal that stopped India from launching a bigger late assault.
Marizanne Kapp finished with figures of 2 for 27 in four overs at an economy rate of just 6.75, making her South Africa’s most effective pace bowler. Marizanne Kapp was well supported by Shabnim Ismail, who also claimed two wickets. Importantly, there were no major dropped catches against Marizanne Kapp’s bowling, allowing South Africa to capitalize on every opportunity.
Although India reached 158/7, South Africa would have been satisfied because they prevented any batter from converting a start into a match-defining innings. The wickets of Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh came at crucial stages and ensured India fell short of the 170-plus total they were aiming for.
Marizanne Kapp’s unbeaten 81 turns the Match in South Africa’s Favour
The chase did not begin smoothly for South Africa. Captain Laura Wolvaardt fell for 20, and Anneke Dercksen was dismissed for a duck, leaving the side under pressure at 25/2 in 5.4 overs. However, Marizanne Kapp stepped up when her team needed her most.
Marizanne Kapp initially focused on rebuilding the innings with Tazmin Brits, who scored a steady 40 off 36 balls. Once the partnership of 97 runs in 63 balls was broken, Marizanne Kapp shifted gears brilliantly as at that time Proteas required 37 runs to win from 23 balls. Kapp particularly targeted the Indian bowling in the middle and death overs, taking advantage of anything short or overpitched.
India’s bowlers struggled to contain her after the 15th over. Deepti Sharma conceded 44 runs from her four overs, while Priya Rawat and Amanjot Reddy were also unable to stop Kapp’s attacking Strokeplay. The decisive phase came between overs 16 and 19, where South Africa rapidly reduced the required rate. Kapp cleared the boundary four times and struck seven fours during her unbeaten knock, finishing with a strike rate of 180.
Even after Tazmin Brits departed for 40, Kapp remained calm and in complete control. Chloe Tryon’s quick unbeaten 10 from four deliveries provided support, but it was Kapp who dictated the chase from start to finish. South Africa eventually reached 161/4 in 19.1 overs, securing victory with five balls to spare.
Marizanne Kapp’s all-round masterclass showcased exactly why she is regarded as one of the finest players in women’s cricket. Her ability to influence the game with both bat and ball not only earned her the player of the Match award but also delivered South Africa a crucial World Cup Victory.
