IPL 2025: “Who Will Give Rs 21 Crore To Mitchell Starc In Australia?”- Navjot Singh Sidhu Calls It a Marketing Marvel

IPL Global Influence has reshaped the cricketing world, making India the ultimate destination for top international players. Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu called the IPL a “marketing manager’s dream,” emphasizing how the league has revolutionized the sport’s financial and competitive landscape.

IPL Global Influence: How the Tournament Redefined Cricket’s Power Dynamics

As the 2025 IPL season unfolds spectacularly, Sidhu compared today’s lucrative contracts with his playing days in England’s county championship. Reflecting on last year’s IPL mega auction in Jeddah, he remarked on the staggering sums players now command.

“The Indian Premier League is the crown jewel, raising India’s pride worldwide. Earlier, we used to go to play county championship in England in huge numbers; now, they are the ones who come to our country because the IPL has been incentivized,”

Citing Australian pacer Mitchell Starc’s record-breaking ₹21 crore contract (*23.75 crores), Sidhu emphasized the league’s immense financial appeal.  He further praised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for running Indian cricket so efficiently that

“Who will give 21 crores to Mitchell Starc in Australia? It is a marketing manager’s dream. It can sell ice to the Eskimos and sand to the Arabs,”

A Bright Future for Indian Cricket

The 2024 IPL season showcased the rise of emerging talents like Abhishek Sharma and Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Addressing the ‘Bold vs Gold’ debate, Sidhu dismissed any rivalry between generations while having an interaction with IANS, saying,

“The golden generation has moulded the young, bold generation. It is a huge pride for India that the younger generation is getting ready to take the baton,”

Do big hefty amounts in IPL really exist

In IPL 2024, Mitchell Starc was bought by KKR with a whooping price of 23.75 crores. Now, the speedster wasn’t retained before IPL 2025 mega auction by KKR, his base shifted from KKR to DC with a price of 11.75 crores. A particular player has a contract of 3 years as in IPL we have seen most of the times that mega auction takes place after every 3 years.

In Mitchell Starc’s case, he got paid when he played all the matches, training sessions & team meetings after the tournament got over. Starc played 13 matches out of KKR’s 15 matches. It looks highly unlikely that Starc would have got 23.75 crores for a single edition. There’s no doubt that IPL is becoming & we can also say, the biggest league on planet but getting all amount whether it is in 5 or 10 cores or 20 crores for a 2 & half months competition seems plausible.
