The Punjab Kings have formally named Shreyas Iyer as their captain for the 2025 Indian Premier League season. Later in the year, the Kolkata Knight Riders released Shreyas Iyer, who helped the team win the 2024 tournament. Kings then acquired him for INR 26.75 crore, the second-highest purchase in the auction.

With four titles across all formats, the 30-year-old has enjoyed an incredibly successful 12 months in both domestic cricket and the IPL. Shreyas Iyer captained the Mumbai squad that won the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in addition to leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to victory the previous season. He was also a member of the Mumbai team that won the Irani Trophy and the Ranji Trophy.

Iyer, 30, is one of just eight captains to have won the IPL. He achieved this last year while captaining the Kolkata Knight Riders, which he captained from 2022 to 2024. Iyer was purchased by PBKS, who had the largest budget in the IPL 2025 mega auction, for INR 26.75 crore, surpassing the price of Delhi Capitals, another team searching for a captain.

Shreyas Iyer And Ricky Ponting At The Top For PBKS

Shreyas Iyer said he was thrilled by the recent situation and would like to help a team that hasn’t won an IPL championship. In 2014, Kings had their best season ever, reaching the final before losing to the Kolkata Knight Riders. Iyer thinks the team put together is strong enough to compete in the PBKS mega auction, which was only somewhat successful.

“I am honoured that the team has reposed its faith in me. I am looking forward to working again with Coach Ponting. The team looks strong, with a great mix of potential and proven performers. I hope to repay the faith shown by the management to deliver our maiden title,” said Shreyas Iyer.

Being captain means that Iyer and Ricky Ponting, who led the Delhi Capitals to their first-ever IPL final in 2020, will once again serve as captain and coach. The Australian heaped accolades on Shreyas Iyer’s qualifications and seemed excited to collaborate with him for a new assignment.

“Shreyas has a great mind for the game. His proven capabilities as captain will enable the team to deliver. I have enjoyed my time with Iyer in the past in IPL, and I look forward to working with him again. With his leadership and the talent in the squad, I am excited about the seasons ahead,” said Ricky Ponting.

Shreyas Iyer was predicted to be the leading candidate for Punjab’s captaincy from the moment he was purchased at an incredible price. CEO Satish Menon disclosed that the aggressive bid by the Francisse for the Mumbai batter was the result of a major maneuver. Menon shares Iyer and Ponting’s hope that this captain-coach duo will aid Punjab in their comeback starting in the 2025 campaign.

“We had identified Shreyas as our captain and were delighted with the auction result. He has already proven himself to master the format, and his vision for the team aligns perfectly with our goals. With him and Ponting joining hands again, we are confident our team has a solid leadership group to guide us to our first title,” said Satish Menon.
