Franchise Cricket has evolved like nothing and its craze has spread worldwide, IPL created that base to make league cricket a worldwide game and has gained positivity over the years and so many such leagues even started just because of that, like the SA20 League, ILT20, The Hundred and Big Bash too have gained popularity.
But this has impacted international cricket many players prioritize league cricket over international cricket just because they have exposure and earn a lot of money. It’s a curse for cricket which has degraded the importance of international cricket.
Ian Chappell has raised concerns about IPL owner’s influence
IPL owners have owned many teams all over the world and their importance has increased a lot. Now some reports recently said that Delhi Capitals are in talks to own Hampshire Cricket Club and need to have a stake in it and The Hundred wants to own the teams by IPL owners which would create more exciting news for cricket fans as Indian women too take part in The Hundred but men’s haven’t participate in the league, but in future this deal cracks then can we see our Indian men cricketers will participate in foreign leagues. Australian legend Ian Chappell has raised concerns over this, Ian Chappell said:
“The shrewd owners are also starting to sign top-rated players to longer contracts and that should be a warning to cricket administrations. The better players could become beholden to an IPL owner rather than their cricket board. That is when conflict of interest becomes a divisive issue.”
“Most successful business people don’t achieve their prominent positions by being philanthropists. Will sufficient funds be channelled back into the game or will a large proportion end up as shareholder bonuses awarded by rich business conglomerates? Do shrewd business people necessarily make good cricket team owners?” the 80-year-old Aussie legend questioned.
Such kinds of practices may finish international cricket and the importance will also lost in the future because for the sake of money, many players are moving forward in that direction.
