Jasprit Bumrah had a day to remember as he picked up a 5-wicket haul by cleaning up the last two wickets to keep South Africa to 159 in 55 overs. In reply, India have lost Yashasvi Jaiswal for 12 to Marco Jansen. KL Rahul is still there on 13* alongside the new Number 3 Washington Sundar on 6* as India ended the day at 37/1 in 20 overs still trailing by 122 runs. India have their noses in front alright. But they have to bat well to push South Africa further back.
South Africa will look to make early inroads and roar back in the game. They will try and do it. Let’s see how Day 2 unfolds.
Jasprit Bumrah cleans up the tail and picks a five-wicket haul; India lose Jaiswal early in the innings
Simon Harmer came out to join Tristan Stubbs after Tea while Jasprit Bumrah had ball in hand for India. Bumrah started with a maiden over. Axar Patel continued from the other end. He bowled a tight over as well. Harmer managed to hit Bumrah for a boundary through an edge to the third man fence. But the speedster hit back and got rid of Harmer for 5 off 5 balls with a boundary to his name.
Bumrah bowled a back of a length outside the off-stump that nipped back in viciously off the surface and stayed a little low as well. Harmer stayed rooted in his crease and looked to block with a straight bat but played down the wrong line and got beaten on the outside edge and the ball hit the off-stump. Keshav Maharaj came out to bat next. Bumrah got another in the over and completed yet another five-wicket haul as he dismissed Maharaj for a bronze duck.
Bumrah bowled the searing yorker on the middle and leg stump. Maharaj was late in taking his front leg away from its line and was late to get his bat down in time. The ball hit the front boot. The appeal was given OUT and South Africa had no reviews left and so Maharaj had to go although the ball went down the leg side. Stubbs remained unbeaten on 15 as South Africa were bowled out for 159 in 54 overs. 15 extras was given by the fielding side.
Jasprit Bumrah had magical figures of 5/27 in 14 overs. Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with 2 wickets apiece and a wicket also to Axar Patel. All in all, a good bowling display from the Indian team.
India came out to bat with Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul opening for India while Marco Jansen had ball in hand for South Africa. Jansen started with a maiden over. Wiaan Mulder had ball in hand from the other end. He bowled a decent over. Jansen continued and bowled a decent over despite overstepping. Mulder bowled another maiden over.
Jansen continued as Jaiswal broke the shackles as he hit this back past the bowler for a boundary through wide mid-off. Jaiswal then targeted Mulder as he hit him gloriously down the ground for a boundary. Jaiswal hit another boundary down the ground past mid-off for a boundary. Jansen drew first blood for South Africa as he dismissed Jaiswal for 12 off 27 balls with 3 fours to his name.
Jansen bowled a back of a length delivery in the channel outside off-stump. Jaiswal stayed back and looked to go for his favourite cut shot but there is not room enough on offer to nail the stroke and got a big inside edge that deflected back onto disturb the poles. Washington Sundar came out to bat at 3. Mulder bowled another decent over even though he overstepped again. Jansen bowled another probing over.
Mulder continued as Rahul drove him beautifully through the covers for a boundary. Jansen continued and bowled a maiden over. India were crawling at 28/1 in 11 overs when the final Drinks Break was called onto the field.
KL Rahul and Washington Sundar survive a few scares and take their side to the close as bad light ended proceedings early
Keshav Maharaj came into the attack next. He bowled a decent over. Corbin Bosch came into the attack next. He started with a miserly first over. Maharaj bowled another good over. Bosch bowled another maiden over. Maharaj followed it up with another maiden over. Bosch bowled another maiden over as runs had dried up totally.
KL Rahul broke the shackles as he hit Maharaj for a boundary by rocking on the back foot as he punched it to the left of mid-off and Jansen missed it with a sliding effort as the ball raced away to the extra cover fence. Simon Harmer came into the attack next and bowled a maiden over. Maharaj also bowled a miserly over as India reached 37/1 in 20 overs when the light metres came out and made sure that Bad Light stopped play and ended proceedings. 6 extras given by the fielding side. Rahul is unbeaten on 13 while Sundar is unbeaten on 6.

What Lies Ahead on Day 2
At the end of the day’s play, it is true that India have their noses in front as they trail by 122 runs with 9 wickets in hand. But the hosts will have to bat well and try and bat big to put pressure on the Proteas. It won’t be easy though as the pitch is doing tricks and looking like a minefield. South Africa will search for early wickets and inroads and limit India’s lead to as low as possible.
