With the first day of this South Africa and India test match officially done, it was clear that one side had a full advantage today, while being able to show off all their strengths. Seeing that India was the side who has put themselves in a very winnable situation already, they just trail by 122 runs and the loss of 1 wicket.
A group that has already started their World Test Championship at a 4-2-1 record, it’s pretty obvious that they are fighting to make it back into the finals after playing the first two. Captain Shubman Gill had shown a lot of fight and courage today, while also being a player who could hold his cool despite some very controversial situations surrounding his side.
Meanwhile, the Proteas had a real day to forget as they couldn’t produce much with the bat and seemed to have been quite expensive in the bowling phase, as well. Being a side that has just come off a series against Pakistan, they did end up coming back big-time after a slow start, and it will be interesting to see if they can replicate that here.
One huge lineup change that made which shocked most fans was playing Dewald Brevis over Tony De Zorzi because Brevis seemed like a key piece to play against bigger nations in test matches. With day two on the cusp, South Africa can’t be ruled out already despite a damaging start because captain Temba Bavuma has proven to be someone who builds motivation for all his teammates as the match progresses.
South Africa: Nightmare First Innings That Had A Huge Middle-Order Collapse
Look at the way South Africa batted today, it was a real problem despite the top really performing well to develop some pressure. As Ryan Rickleton looked like he was emerging into a real threat today and hitting fours all around the ground, he was a massive part of the opening 57-run partnership with Aiden Markram.
Scoring 23 runs on 22 deliveries, this was someone batting at a 100 strike rate from the left end, while continuing to play with class before getting clean-bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. On the right end, Markram did try continuing after Rickleton lost his wicket, but was removed a couple balls later after edging one right into Rishabh Pant’s gloves.
Going for 31 on 48 balls and hitting 6 combined boundaries, he helped them get to 62 runs, while creating a great intial launchpad for Temba Bavuma and Wiaan Mulder to dominate. Although Bavuma was a heavy favorite to have one of the bigger innings today, he only lasted 11 balls before Kuldeep Yadav’s spin delivery completely fooled him and caused this Proteas unit to be 71/3. With Mulder still in there, he was able to lift the score up over 100 alongside Tony De Zorzi, while these two looked like they would last a long time.
In their 40+ run partnership, Mulder finished with 24 runs before being removed by Kuldeep Yadav, while Tony De Zorzi fell at the same mark to make it 120/5. From there, only Tristan Stubbs, 15 runs not out, had a strong showing as wickets fell extremely quickly within the remaining 39 runs.
India: Bowling Unit Proved To Have Great Balance Despite It Being More Spin-Friendly
For India, their bowling attack once again proved why they are one of the top around the world, and can take on any batsmen. With pacer Jasprit Bumrah having taken a 5-wicket haul, it was clear that his yorkers were once again on point and nearly impossible to go deep with. Someone who was looking very close to picking up his first wicket within those two overs, he had asserted his dominance pretty early after allowing just two runs in four full overs.
As he finished his innings with an economy less than 2.00, that was truly remarkable given that he bowled 14.0 overs and was also a massive piece that took 5 maidens when it mattered the most.
On the right side, Mohammed Siraj was also very impactful as he leaked more runs, but also was able to get two wickets. Going for an economy that was near 4.00, his ability to bowl at a consistent pace and in similar areas helped him finally break through, while giving the spinners a boost, too.
Talking about spin, the name that has to be mentioned is Kuldeep Yadav, as he did a tremendous job in limiting the runs to almost 2.5 an over, while also taking a couple of wickets in the middle himself. Someone who can turn the ball from almost any angle, he did a masterful job, while Axar Patel also added a great final three overs in which he just gave up one run and almost removed the dangerous Corbin Bosch.
India: Batting Unit Started Their Innings Quite Fluently Despite One Big Fall
Looking at India’s side in the batting department, they showed an early ability to fight and take advantage of their innings early. With the openers having ended up being Yashashvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul once again, these two pieces were able to create from opposite ends and fool a lot of bowlers.
Seeing that the young Jaiswal started his batting quite early, he hit three fours and was looking like a real threat before Marco Jansen completely overpowered him. With Washington Sundar coming in, he and KL Rahul will start tommorow’s innings together after already combining for 19 runs early on and helping this India side reach a 37/1 mark.
Seeing the bowling, Marco Jansen had 6 tremendous overs and was able to pick up a quick wicket too. Someone who has already done 6 overs, he looks like this side’s strongest option as his economy is at 1.83 and continues attacking with pace. Although Wiaan Mulder also got 5 overs done, he was less of a wicket-taking threat and seemed to be there to just build up pressure.
Having an economy that fares around the 3.00 range, he is looking to fully replace Rabada in this match. For spinning, Keshav Maharaj has been brilliant in his 5 overs with one maiden and just 8 total runs allowed, while Simon Harmer delivered a maiden as well.
What Could We Expect To See On Day 2?
As tommorow is a day where India will start batting once again and hope to chase down 159, it will be Washington Sundar’s task to uplift an innings with KL Rahul. A duo that will be on opposite sides, their ability to create runs is going to massive, so Shubhman Gill and Rishabh Pant can bat with much less pressure.
Hoping to put up a big total like they had done in their England series, this could pose a much more intense challenge because Temba Bavuma is standing on the other side. One of the best captains who always finds ways to win, it will be interesting to see how he mixes up his pacers and spinners tommorow, while hoping for a chance to bat again.
