South Africa crashed to a humiliating 101-run defeat at the hands of hosts India in Cuttack as they posted their lowest score in T20Is. It was an embarrassment as the visitors folded like a pack of cards as India bowled really well on a pitch which was challenging but certainly not a 74 all out pitch. While South Africa‘s bowling was decent, the batting let them down big time. There were a lot of areas where South Africa fell short and we will list out three reasons for this humiliating loss.
Batting failure as a whole exposes South Africa’s weakness.Â
Chasing 176 for the win, one would have expected South Africa to make a match out of it and fight till the end. The pitch albeit challenging was not a bad pitch and with dew coming in, we expected it to be better for batting while chasing. But the way South African batting performed was abysmal to say the least. They fell like a pack of cards and it was a meek surrender to say the least.
South Africa never really got going as they lost wickets at regular intervals from the start. Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs fell to Arshdeep Singh while Aiden Markram was cleaned up by Axar Patel as well. The Proteas never got a partnership going and wilted under disciplined bowling. Their line-up had batting restricted till 7 as Maharaj was batting at 8 as there was shockingly no place for Corbin Bosch in the XI, Once batting was thin, early wickets meant that they would feel the heat.
They lost 3 in the powerplay which is not a disaster but then fell like a pack of cards in the middle phase as the spinners too took over. No batter got above 25 with Dewald Brevis making 22. But the others were a disappointment. All the Indian bowlers got wickets which was great for them but not so good for South Africa. To say they need an improvement is an understatement and they need to bat a lot better than what they dished out in Cuttack. They are capable of doing it, now need to apply themselves.
Inability to dismiss Hardik Pandya puts South Africa in a spot of bother
South Africa bowled really well at the start to keep India under the pump by taking regular wickets through the powerplay and middle overs and kept the runs down as well. But one man came and stood out for India and that was Hardik Pandya. Coming in with India at 78/4 in the 12th overs, Hardik counter attacked and took down South Africa’s premier spinner Keshav Maharaj to put the Proteas on the back foot.
Hardik then tore apart Anrich Nortje and was well supported by other players like Axar Patel, Shivam Dube and Jitesh Sharma. But Hardik was the catalyst and he took the game away from South Africa especially in the death overs. India had passed 121 in 15 overs and then stepped onto the accelerator with Hardik doing the damage as he completed his fifty in 25 balls to rescue India. But South Africa bowled the wrong lines and lengths to him and it allowed him to tee off. The Proteas wilted under pressure from Hardik.
Going forward, South Africa needs to be incisive in their bowling especially in the death overs as they were pretty good in the other two phases. They need to have better plans bowling to Indian batters in the death as this innings helped India post an above par score. It was not a winning score but definitely challenging which turned out to be too much for South Africa. The Proteas would like to improve on this aspect in order to compete better against the strong South African team.
Failure of Aiden Markram & Keshav Maharaj hurts South Africa
Aiden Markram had another tough day at the office as a captain and as a player. Yes, he won a good toss and made the bowling changes really well initially to keep India under the pump. But then he did not bowl himself but bowled Donovan Ferreira. Yes, Donovan did pick Dube’s wicket but Markram bowling at that stage would have been handy for South Africa considering a plethora of left-handers that India has.
Then with the bat in hand, he again failed in T20Is scoring only 14. He is repeatedly failing in T20is as one would remember he had an average T20 World Cup 2024 and lately also hasn’t done well in this format. It’s high time that Markram the batter helps Markram the captain because South Africa needs runs from him at the top of the the order. He is a capable player but not in form at this stage which is hurting the Proteas.
What doesn’t help also is Keshav Maharaj’s performance and form. Hardik Pandya took him down in an over and so he bowled only 2 overs for 25 runs. He has had a hot and cold tour of India as in the Tests he was distant second to Simon Harmer who bamboozled India. In the ODIs, he played in two matches after missing the first match and was average at best. For South Africa to do well, they need their senior campaigners to shine and Markram and Maharaj are two integral members of the side. Both need to step up and be counted and they have got one day in between to sort things up.
What Lies Ahead
The stage is set for the second T20I with India leading the series 1-0 and would like to make it 2-0 when the two teams meet in New Chandigarh in Mullanpur for the second match on 11th December 2025 at 7 PM IST onwards. South Africa will be desperate to make it 1-1 after 2 games to spice things up. Let’s see how things unfold in the second of five games in this series.
