SL vs IND: It Is Important For Hardik Pandya To Keep Playing, Says Ravi Shastri

Ace all-arounder Hardik Pandya was only mentioned as a player when the Indian squad for the current Sri Lanka trip was revealed, with Suryakumar Yadav being chosen as India’s T20I captain. Many may have been taken aback by it, particularly in light of Pandya’s role as Rohit Sharma’s deputy during the T20 World Cup.

According to former India head coach Ravi Shastri, all-arounder Hardik Pandya must play and keep his health whether he is captain or not. Pandya was only mentioned as a player when the Indian squad for the current tour of Sri Lanka was revealed; Suryakumar Yadav was chosen as India’s T20I captain.

Hardik Pandya lost the leadership due to his ongoing fitness issues. Ajit Agarkar, the head of the senior Indian men’s selection committee, stated that they wanted a cricket player they could depend on in terms of availability, therefore they chose Hardik Pandya.

Ravi Shastri Advises Hardik Pandya

The star Indian all-rounder has received insightful guidance from Shastri on how to reach his best level of play again. Pandya is taking on Sri Lanka in the T20I series right now.

“I think (it’s) very important that he continues to play. I believe match fitness is very important. So whatever T20I cricket there is, he should play as much as he can. And if he feels strong and fit, then obviously he comes into the side for the one-day game as well,” Shastri said while speaking in the latest edition of the ICC Review.

“But then again, the bowling becomes important. If you have someone coming and If you have someone coming and bowling just three overs in where you have to bowl 10 in a one-day game, then the balance of the side takes a hit,” Shastri added

The last six years have seen Pandya endure a protracted battle with severe ailments. Pandya sustained a stress fracture during India’s 2018 Asia Cup match against Pakistan. X-rays showed the fracture required surgery and prolonged rehabilitation, which would have kept Pandya out for months. He made the decision to heal without surgery, becoming healthy in time for the 2019 ODI World Cup.

In the later part of 2019, Pandya’s back issues returned, necessitating surgery. In the most recent India ODI World Cup encounter against Bangladesh, he injured his ankle trying to field the ball on follow-through. Pandya was out for a long time due to this injury, and he only recently made his comeback to the T20 World Cup last month.

After his return, he made an impression with his all-around abilities and contributed significantly to India winning the title. India’s 11-year trophy drought came to an end in the final thanks to Pandya’s performance under duress. He took crucial wickets of David Miller in the penultimate over and the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen.
