Will Jacks played the perfect role of finisher as his maiden T20I fifty powered England past 200 runs. Will Jacks looked like a man possessed and showed his class as his innings powered England to 202/7 in 20 overs with useful contributions from the others. Italy were good in patches but they couldn’t be consistent enough and so England cashed in on the inexperience of this Italy side.
England gets off to a solid start despite losing both openers in powerplay.Â
Winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Philip Salt and Jos Buttler came out to bat for England while JJ Smuts had ball in hand for Italy. Salt started with a bang down the ground past the bowler for a boundary. Ali Hasan came into the attack from the other end. Salt took on Hasan with a swivel pull over backward square leg for the maximum. Salt flicked the ball between midwicket and forward square leg for a boundary.
Grant Stewart came into the attack next and he removed Buttler for 3 off 4 balls with the batter miscuing it to mid-off. Jacob Bethell came out to bat next and he bent his back knee to nail the extra cover drive for a boundary. Hasan continued as Bethell got a top edge that went over short third man for a boundary. Stewart continued as Bethell shimmied down the track and whacked it over long-on for the maximum. Salt went big again as he pulled it away over backward square leg for the maximum. The 50 came up for England in 4.5 overs.
Ali Hasan bowled the last over of the powerplay. Hasan removed Salt the other opener for 28 off 15 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes to his name as Mosca ran it at deep backward square leg and took the catch inches from the ground. Drinks was taken after which Tom Banton came out to bat next. Banton got off the mark as well. At the end of 6 overs of powerplay, England were 56/2 in 6 overs with Bethell unbeaten on 21 off 16 balls and Banton unbeaten on 1 off 1 ball.

Crishan Kalugamage came into the attack post the powerplay. Banton rocked back and looked to cut and got a bottom edge that went between the legs of the keeper and away for a boundary. Ben Manenti came into the attack next and he removed Bethell for 23 off 20 balls with 2 fours and one six to his name as the deep backward square leg fielder took the catch. Captain Harry Brook came out to bat next. Banton hit Manenti by guiding the ball down to the third man fence for a boundary.
Smuts returned to the attack and bowled a tight over. Kalugamage continued as Banton punched off the back foot through the extra cover region for a boundary. England reached 82/3 in 10 overs at the halfway stage of the game. Smuts continued as Brook thumped the bowler right of long-off for a boundary and then dismissed Smuts for the maximum with a pull over deep square leg. Smuts then removed Brook for 14 off 9 balls with one four and one six to his name as the keeper took a sharp reflex catch. Sam Curran came out to bat next and got off the mark.
Ben Manenti returned to the bowling crease. He bowled a good over. Crishan Kalugamage came back into the attack as Banton used his feet and got to the pitch of the ball and pumped it straight down the ground for the maximum over long-on as the 100 came up in 12.1 overs for England. Kalugamage hit back and got rid of Banton for 30 off 21 balls with 3 fours and one six to his name as he miscued the pull to deep midwicket fielder. Will Jacks came out to bat next and got off the mark with a brace.
Ben continued and bowled a decent over. England were 114/5 in 14 overs when we paused for the Drinks Break, the second of the innings. Jaspreet Singh came into the attack post the Drinks Break. Jacks slashed it away by getting the ball into the gap between short third man and backward point for a boundary. England reached 124/5 in 15 overs with Jacks unbeaten on 13 off 8 balls and Sam Curran unbeaten on 9 off 13 balls as we entered the last 5 overs of the innings.

Ben Manenti came to bowl his final over. Jacks crunched him away through sweeper covers for a boundary. Jacks took on Manenti and heaved it away over deep midwicket for the maximum. Jacks went big again as he went over deep midwicket for the maximum. Kalugamage came back into the attack as Curran picked the length and roared back and muscled it over wide long-on for the maximum. Curran went big and pumped it straight down the ground for the maximum. The 50-run stand was up between Curran and Jacks.
Kalugamage had the last laugh as he dismissed Curran for 25 off 19 balls with 2 sixes to his name as he was holed out at covers. Jamie Overton came out to bat next. Grant Stewart came back into the attack as Overton went up and over short third man for a boundary. Jacks smashed the ball over mid-off for a boundary. Ali Hasan came to bowl the 19th over as Overton went big over deep midwicket by clearing his front leg for the maximum.
Grant Stewart had ball in hand for the last over as Jacks used his wrists and smacked it over deep square leg for the maximum. Stewart then got rid of Overton for 15 off 9 balls with one four and one six to his name as the deep point fielder took the catch. Jofra Archer came out to bat next. He got off the mark and then Jacks got down and picked it up and muscled it over deep square leg for the maximum. Jacks got to his maiden T20I fifty in 21 balls as the 200 came up for England in 19.5 overs. The last ball was a dot ball.
England finished with 202/7 in 20 overs with Jacks unbeaten on 53 off 22 balls with 3 fours and 4 sixes to his name with Archer unbeaten on 1 off 1 ball. 10 extras given by the fielding side. It was a mixed day for the Italy bowlers. Crishan Kalugamage finished with 2/41 in 4 overs. Grant Stewart finished with 2/51 in 4 overs. Ali Hasan finished with 1/37 in 4 overs. Ben Manenti finished with 1/37 in 4 overs. JJ Smuts finished with 1/24 in 3 overs. Jaspreet Singh bowled an over for 10 runs. This meant that Italy needs 203 runs to win off 20 overs.
Who’s Winning, England or Italy?Â
England have got a huge score on the board and it will be virtually impossible for Italy to chase it down. Italy bowled well in patches but England have got over 200 runs. It will take a herculean effort from Italy to even make a match out of this. Taking everything into consideration, we feel England will win this easily.
