Lungi Ngidi stood up with the ball in the chase and picked up a 4-wicket haul to limit Canada in the second innings. Lungi Ngidi looked a determined look out there in the middle. Canada won the toss and elected to bowl first. South Africa rode on an excellent half century from Aiden Markram and finish from the rest like David Miller and Tristan Stubbs as the Proteas posted 213/4 in 20 overs without breaking any sweat against the bowling of Canada. Ansh Patel was the best picking up 3 wickets.
While defending the score, Lungi Ngidi stood up in Ahmedabad and showed his class as his 4-wicket haul limited Canada to a low score. The other bowlers chipped in as well with Marco Jansen picking up two wickets and others chipped in as well. Canada finished with an impressive display with the ball with other players chipping in as well. Marco Jansen picked up two wickets while the others couldn’t quite finish the flight and light issues. Canada ended with 156/8 in 20 overs, a respectable score but nowhere near enough.
Aiden Markram’s explosive half-century powers South Africa to 213/4.Â
Put into bat first, captain Aiden Markram and keeper batter Quinton de Kock came out to open the batting for South Africa while Kaleem Sana had ball in hand for Canada. The South African openers got off to a racing start courtesy of Aiden Markram who was fluent and aggressive of the two. Quinton looked scratchy but did well to hang in there and give the Proteas a head start in the innings. They raced away in the powerplay and were 66/0 in 6 overs.
The duo put on 70 for the first wicket inside 7 overs before Quinton de Kock fell for 25 off 22 balls with 2 fours to his name as he was cleaned up by Dilpreet Bajwa. Ryan Rickelton came out to bat and got off the mark soon. Markram and Rickelton continued from where the previous pair left and accelerated at the other end. Rickelton was quick off the blocks too while Markram completed yet another impressive half-century.
The duo of Markram and Rickelton put on 56 runs off 29 balls for the second wicket before Markram fell for 59 off 32 balls with 10 fours and one six to his name as Ansh Patel picked up his first wicket. Dewald Brevis came out to bat next. Rickelton and Brevis added another 11 runs to the tally before Rickelton fell for 33 off 21 balls with 3 fours and a maximum to his name to Ansh yet again. David Miller came out to bat next.
Just one run was added to the scoreline before Brevis fell for 6 off 6 balls with one boundary to his name to Patel yet again. Tristan Stubbs came out to join Miller with the score at 138/4 in 13.5 overs. Miller and Stubbs got together and played the role of finishers. They aced the phase to perfection. The duo made sure that there were no more wickets lost of South Africa.
The duo played their shots with both complimenting each other really well. Miller was in his elements and Stubbs too found his groove as well. Both of them took care of the Canada bowling which lacked experience if we are being brutally honest about it. Big overs came towards the end as overs of 17, 21 became a norm for the Proteas players.
In the end, David Miller was unbeaten on 39 off 23 balls with one four and three sixes to his name while Tristian Stubbs finished with an unbeaten on 34 off 19 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes as they shared an unbeaten stand of 75 runs off 38 balls as South Africa finished with 213/4 in 20 overs with 17 extras given by the fielding side.
Canada bowlers had a tough outing with the ball. Ansh Patel was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/31 in 4 overs. Captain Dilpreet Bajwa finished with 1/40 in 4 overs. Kaleem Sana gave away 38 in 4 overs. Saad Bin Zafar gave away 38 runs in 3 overs. Jaskaran Singh Buttar finished with 0/49 in 4 overs. Dilon Heyliger bowled an over for 13 runs. So, that meant Canada needed a mammoth 214 runs to win off 20 overs.
Lungi Ngidi’s 4-wicket haul limits Canada to 156/8.Â
Chasing 214 for the win, captain Dilpreet Bajwa and Yuvraj Samra opened the batting for Canada while Lungi Ngidi had ball in hand for South Africa. Ngidi removed Bajwa off the first ball of the innings as he got the outside edge to the keeper. Navneet Dhaliwal came out to bat next. Navneet was ready to tackle challenge ahead of him and his team. The duo added 22 runs for the second wicket before Yuvraj fell for 12 off 8 balls with 3 fours to his name to Ngidi as well.
Nicholas Kirton came out to bat next but he too did not last long. Just 4 runs were added to the score, before Kirton was dismissed for 4 off 3 balls with one boundary to his name to Ngidi. Shreyas Movva came out to bat next. Movva and Dhaliwal looked good and tried to form a partnership. The duo put on 19 runs for the 4th wicket before Movva fell for 9 off 11 balls with 2 fours to his name.
Harsh Thaker came out to join Dhaliwal in the middle inside the powerplay as Canada reached 40/4 in 6 overs. Dhaliwal and Thaker started to rebuild proceedings but it was a bit too late in the match as the Canada side was ahead of the game. Thaker and Dhaliwal put on 69 runs off 53 balls before Thaker fell for 33 off 29 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes to his name. Saad Bin Zafar came out to bat next.
Bin Zafar and Dhaliwal joined forces and added 19 runs for the 6th wicket before Saad fell for 11 off 12 balls with one four to his name to Marco Jansen. Jaskaran Buttar came out to bat next and fell first ball for a golden duck to Jansen who was on a hat-trick. Dilon Heyliger came out and survived the hat-trick ball. South Africa now had Canada at 133/7 in 17.2 overs. Dhaliwal played a lone hand and completed an excellent half century.
Heyliger and Dhaliwal added another 17 runs for the 8th wicket with the form batter scoring most of the scoring before Dhaliwal finally fell for 64 off 49 balls with 7 fours and one six to his name to Corbin Bosch. Kaleem Sana came to the crease next with 5 balls to go and 150 up for Canada. The duo added 6 runs off the last 5 balls as Canada finished with 156/8 in 20 overs with Heyliger unbeaten on 4 off 5 balls while Kaleem Sana was unbeaten on 5 off 3 balls with one boundary to his name. 14 extras given by the fielding side.
Lungi Ngidi was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa with figures of 4/31 in 4 overs. Marco Jansen chipped in with 2/30 in 4 overs. Corbin Bosch finished with 1/27 in 4 overs. Kagiso Rabada finished with 1/40 in 4 overs. Keshav Maharaj bowled a miserly spell and ended with 0/28 in 4 overs. So, a win by 57 runs for South Africa. Lungi Ngidi was awarded the Player of the Match.
What Lies Ahead.Â
So, a comprehensive win for South Africa to down Canada by 57 runs and climb upwards in the points table in Group D. South Africa next faces Afghanistan in a day game later on in tournament. Canada will go and play UAE next. So, a lot to look forward to in World Cup 2026 as we have another triple header for you on Tuesday. First up it’s Namibia vs Netherlands live from New Delhi at 11 am IST. Then in the afternoon game, New Zealand will face UAE in Chennai at 3 PM IST. This will be followed by the evening game which will be between Pakistan and USA at the SSC in Colombo under lights for the first time at 7 PM IST.
