ICC T20 WC 2026: India’s Campaign Ruthless Yet Worrisome

India has reached yet another super eight stage of ICC T20 World Cup and it has been another clean record by them in the group stages. Suryakumar Yadav’s team is not only the unbeaten side in the world cup but has also topped the table with eight points having a superior run-rate.

It is a historic moment as India looks to repeat its performance of 2024 T20 World Cup at Barbados by lifting the trophy again but, this year the team has looked sloppy. Although it has maintained an unbeaten record, there are stark differences between the team of 2026 T20 World Cup and the one of 2024.

In the World Cup at West Indies and USA, India not only hammered oppositions in the group stage but the victories felt convincing and flawless as every player was contributing, the team had a set combination and overall, there was a perfect balance of role clarity and execution under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.

Since Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the coach, the team has seen a lot of chopping and changing whether it is in the test or the one-day side, the batting orders have looked confusing and now as India is in the halfway stage of the T20 World Cup, massive changes must be avoided and Captain Suryakumar Yadav must show proactiveness.

The team cannot afford any slipups now and this is the chance to tighten the loose screws wherever necessary as the Men-in blue look to repeat history and maintain the dominance in the shortest format. Gautam Gambhir as a coach, might have an ordinary test and One-day record but he deserves full marks as a T20 coach.

India’s Next Assignment and Journey So Far

India faces a stern challenge against South Africa on 22nd February who like India is unbeaten in the group matches. Group 1 which comprises of West Indies, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and India is believed to be the group of death for the sheer reason that all the teams have had an unbeaten run in the group stages and are high on confidence.

South Africa played a bilateral series against India in India just before the world cup and the tourists got a hammering as they lost the five-match series. Since then, both teams will be facing each other for the first time this world cup.

India’s journey in the group stages was good but not great. The fact that it played all the under-established teams except Pakistan, one would have expected the team to win convincingly but it has not been the case. The match against Netherlands is a fine example of India’s unconvincing late victory and the issues to fix before the South Africa game.

The Men-in-Blue were expected to play their top game in the group stages and it has not been so until now, however coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav will be well aware of this and all the pending dues must be paid before a penalty.

Strengths

India has rode its luck on the back of Ishan Kishan who has been at the peak of his powers in this world cup. 176 runs in just four matches with an average of 44, Ishan has delivered some magical performances as an opener. He already has two fifties to his name and looks determined for another big score.

However, he missed a chance in the last game against Netherlands and it would be in his mind. Apart from Ishan Kishan, the team has been fortunate to have ample options in the wrist spin department to bamboozle the opposition. Varun Chakravarthy has been India’s trump card for this world cup picking nine wickets in four games with an impressive economy of 5.16. Due to his variation and calm reaction Varun is like a nightmare for the opponent.

Having more options in the batting is another plus. The hosts have abundant all-rounders in the squad which in turn impacts the batting positively because the batting goes deep down till number eight where Washington Sundar can also free his hands. Shivam Dube’s rise in form is a big boost as well. Due to his power, he has the ability to accelerate the score at the death overs. After scoring 60 of 30 balls against Netherlands Dube has got into his rhythm. India is blessed with a strong finisher role in Rinku Singh and Hardik Pandya. Dube also has the ability to finish on a high.

Major Gaps to Fill

Before the South Africa game at Ahmedabad, the defending champions have a few ‘if and buts’. Suryakumar Yadav’s form is one of the concerns for the team as he started the tournament on a high note scoring a brilliant 84 but since that match, his bat has suddenly gone silent. 162 runs in four matches and these are his scores after the USA game – 12, 32, 34. The captain must deliver with the bat against South Africa. Abhishek Sharma has had a dry run this world cup scoring three ducks. Undoubtedly, he will be itching to find some form against the Proteas.

However, Abhishek has full support of his captain. Suryakumar also said that he is not too worried about Abhishek’s early dismissals due to India’s current batting template. Another concern for the men-in blue is the form of Tilak Verma. India’s number three has not done justice to his position and in four games, Tilak has only 106 runs and is yet to score a fifty in this edition. Tilak Verma has been the third highest scorer for India in t20 cricket since last year with 540 runs in 17 matches. It is time that he and Abhishek repay the faith shown by the team.

Future Of Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir has had a phenomenal record in t20 cricket and after winning the Asia Cup and Champions Trophy, he is now eyeing the t20 World Cup. BCCI has extended Gambhir’s contract until the 2027 ODI world Cup but Gambhir must be feeling the heat after the test series loss at home against South Africa and this is his chance to punch back.
