It feels like the former England captain and cricket pundit Michael Vaughan has taken on the role of a predictor lately. Michael Vaughan hasn’t been missing any opportunity to troll and downplay England, thanks to the poor performances of both the men’s and women’s teams. Recently, after England lost their ODI series at home to South Africa, Michael Vaughan boldly declared the hosts as the winners of the ICC World Cup 2027.
The countdown to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 has already started, even though the tournament is still two years away. Scheduled to be staged in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia during October–November 2027, the marquee event will mark the 14th edition of the quadrennial competition and promises to be one of the most anticipated tournaments in recent memory.
2025 has been a landmark year for the South Africa. Under the leadership of Temba Bavuma, they captured their first-ever World Test Championship (WTC) Final, defeating a formidable opponent at the very same Lord’s ground. That victory gave South Africa their maiden ICC trophy in the modern era and instilled a belief that they can indeed rise above the weight of history.
Coupled with their ODI series triumph in England after more than two decades, the signs are clear, this team has the balance, the hunger, and the leadership to challenge for global dominance.
South Africa to win ICC ODI WC 2027- Michael Vaughan
Former England men’s cricket team captain Michael Vaughan, who has now donned the hat of an expert and commentator, has made a bold prediction about the winner of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027. The 2027 edition of the men’s 50-over mega event will be played in the months of October and November in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. According to Michael Vaughan, who never managed to win an ICC trophy with the English team during his playing days, South Africa will win the top prize for the first time.
The immediate spark for Michael Vaughan’s statement came on September 4, 2025, at Lord’s Cricket Ground, where South Africa clinched a thrilling five-run victory against England in the second ODI of their three-match series. Having already dominated the first match with a seven-wicket win, the Proteas’ narrow triumph ensured they took an unassailable 2–0 lead and sealed their first bilateral ODI series win in England in a staggering 25 years — their last such success coming all the way back in 1998.
The victory carried added significance, as it highlighted not just their ability to compete in tough conditions but also their newfound resilience in pressure moments, something that has often deserted them in ICC events.
For England, the series loss was a bitter pill to swallow. Once considered the benchmark in limited-overs cricket following their 2019 World Cup triumph, England have slipped alarmingly in ODIs, with their win percentage now drifting toward levels comparable with mid-tier teams like Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Against this backdrop, Michael Vaughan took to his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and offered a prediction that instantly became a talking point:
“South Africa to win the World Cup in 2027 me thinks…”
South Africa played in the semifinals of the ODI World Cup in 1992, 1999, 2007, 2015 and 2023, but they have never managed to qualify for the final. In the semifinals of the 1999, 2007 and 2023 ODI World Cups, Australia managed to get the better of them and then won the title as well.
In June 2025, South Africa ended their 27-year-long wait for an ICC trophy by getting the better of Australia in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 played at Lord’s. In that one-off match, Aiden Makram scored a century in the second innings to help them successfully chase down the target of 282 runs for the loss of just five wickets.
For all the talent South Africa has produced since their readmission to international cricket in 1991, their World Cup history has been littered with heartbreak. They have consistently been among the stronger sides in the group stages, yet have fallen short when the pressure peaks. The ‘chokers’ tag, cruel as it may sound, has stuck with them because of repeated failures at the knockout stage.
They have reached the semi-finals five times, in 1992, 1999, 2007, 2015, and 2023, but on every occasion, they failed to progress to the final. Each of those exits carried its own scar: the rain-rule heartbreak against England in 1992, the infamous tied semi-final against Australia in 1999, a tame loss in 2007, the collapse against New Zealand in 2015, and most recently, the narrow defeat to Australia in 2023 while defending a modest 213.
In the history of the men’s ODI World Cup, only three host teams – India in 2011, Australia in 2015 and England in 2019 – have managed to lift the trophy, and the Proteas will aim to join the elite list in a couple of years’ time.
In addition to making a bold prediction for the winners of the ODI World Cup 2027, Michael Vaughan has also backed Australia to win the 2025 Women’s World Cup. The 2025 edition of the Women’s ODI World Cup will be played from September 30 to November 2 across four venues in India – Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Indore, and Navi Mumbai – and one in Sri Lanka – Colombo.
