ICC Champions Trophy 2025: David Miller Hits Out At ICC For Scheduling

Imagine playing a big cricket game, where you give all, running around the field, hitting sixes and taking catches. You are exhausted, sweaty and hungry, but you don’t have time to rest or celebrate. Instead, you have to rush to airports, grab your bags and get a long flight to another country. Sounds exhausting, right ? That was exactly what happened to South African cricketer David Miller during the Championship trophy.

David Miller not happy with the travel

David Miller recently expressed his frustration with the travel arrangements during the tournament. David Miller said that the constant travel between Dubai and Pakistan was” no deal” for the team. South Africa and Australia had to go to Dubai during last league match of India & New Zealand on 2nd March.

South Africa then had to leave from Dubai to Karachi & then to Lahore to play their Semi Final match on 5th March 2025 against New Zealand. The Proteas along with Kiwis had one day to rest and then training and then knock-out match. New Zealand came out flying colors who acclimatized the conditions swiftly.

David Miller’s comments came after South Africa’s 50-run defeat to New Zealand in the semi-finals. It was only a one-hour and 40-minute fight, but the fact that we were not situated, Miller said we had to fly early in the morning, right after the game. Then we needed to arrive in Dubai at 4 pm, and had to leave again at 7:30 am. The next wasn’t nice.

David Miller had a great game, scoring 100 runs without getting out. It wasn’t enough to help his team win. They still lost against New Zealand. So David Miller’s concerns about the travel schedule and how it affects the team’s performance are valid. He said that the travel schedule is too tough, and it’s affecting the team’s ability to play well.

Who to blame

When a big cricket tournament is held in many different places, it is. It is very hard to manage. The teams have to travel a lot, which can be tiring and affect their performance. David Miller’s comments have sparked a debate about more efficient scheduling and travel arrangements in international cricket.

ICC had allotted the next global tournaments till 2031 in 2021 general board meeting. When we all know that India & Pakistan don’t have great political relations, then how ICC CT 2025 rights were given to them, it is assumed that Pakistan was the winner of ICC CT 2017 that’s why they were the hosts but Indian cricket team was never going to get permission from Indian government to travel to Pakistan.

Former England kicker David Lloyd also voiced his frustration, calling the travel arrangements” ridiculously silly” and better organized. Some Indian fans say that India has had similar travel problems in big tournaments like the 2023 ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup 2024. They are saying that India had to travel a lot too. So it isn’t a fair complaint about travel arrangements but it can’t be ignored as well.

High time for ICC

The controversy highlights the need for better, more efficient scheduling and logistical planning in international cricket, prioritizing player welfare and minimizing disruptions caused by excessive travel. As the sport continues to grow globally, it’s essential to prioritize player welfare and minimize the disruptions caused by excessive travel.

This may improve exploring new formats and scheduling options, such as hosting tournaments in a single location or using more flexible scheduling systems. The ICC knows there are problems with scheduling and travel, and they promise to make changes in future tournaments. International cricket needs better scheduling to avoid unfair advantages.

It’s crystal clear that for India, the travel & schedule was tweaked but ICC can also find a middle ground to make sure that the rest of teams don’t get exhausted.

Currently, some teams travel more than others, which isn’t fair. To fix this, the ICC must ensure players are treated fairly in future tournaments. It would be interesting to see the schedule of next ICC event which is ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in February-March which is staged to be in India & Sri Lanka and the schedule is expected to come around September 2025 with 20 teams fighting for title.
