There are a few reasons why Jacob Bethell might not have been playing for England in the first one-day international against West Indies at Edgbaston. First, and most obviously, Jacob Bethell the boy born in Barbados could have quite easily been in maroon instead of royal blue, in the away dressing room rather than on his home ground for Warwickshire.
Jacob Bethell might have remained at the rescheduled Indian Premier League (IPL), his Royal Challengers Bengaluru side marching to the final some 4,000 miles away in Chandigarh. Virat Kohli and all that. In a short international career, the 21-year-old Jacob Bethell has regularly made waves. Once again he showed why he is a cause of so much hype. Jacob Bethell’s 82 from 53 balls does nothing to quieten the debate around his inclusion in the Test team.
Jacob Bethell’s stunning knock of 82 runs was instrumental in England’s huge win over WI
Jacob Bethell played a breathtaking innings of 82 off 53 balls, smashing eight fours and five sixes as he helped his team post a massive score of 400/8 in their allotted 50 overs. In reply, West Indies got bundled out for 162 in just 26.2 overs, handing England a massive 238-run victory to start the series. Following England’s comprehensive win, Jacob Bethell was adjudged Player of the Match for his sensational knock
This was the left-hander’s England comeback, a first home appearance since impressing in his debut Test series in New Zealand, a first international since a hamstring injury ruled him out of the Champions Trophy. It says much about Jacob Bethell’s growing stature that he was so badly missed in such an awful campaign.
There was the kerfuffle over his non-availability for the Zimbabwe Test. Bethell was the only current member of the Test squad to play in the IPL, rather than turn up at Trent Bridge. There are some who argued he made the wrong choice, especially after new white-ball captain Harry Brook pulled out of his deal with Delhi Capitals.
In Jacob Bethell’s defence, he was picked up by Bengaluru before his Test debut and would surely have taken advice from England coach Brendon McCullum and Test skipper Ben Stokes, two men well-versed in the IPL. More broadly, there are howls of derision when England get thumped in a limited-overs tournament, or are clueless when it comes to batting against and bowling spin. There is a T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
At Edgbaston, Bethell was the headline act. The day could have been about new captain Brook or former skipper Jos Buttler. Bethell showed he is England’s superstar-in-waiting. His innings was one of patience, poise and pizzazz. He might have been unsettled by a relatively slow start of 11 from 19 deliveries, or rattled by a clonk on the head from Alzarri Joseph.
Instead he eased through the gears and looked nailed on for a first hundred in senior professional cricket before losing the strike towards the end of the England innings. When West Indies dropped short, Bethell snapped into swivel pulls, the ball disappearing into the stands. When the tourists then tried to hide the ball outside off stump, he surgically dissected the field with off-drives. There was the brutality of slaps down the ground and cheek of reverse-scoops.
England have talked up Bethell’s potential as a left-arm spinner and when Jamie Overton needed treatment on a finger injury, Bethell was called upon in the powerplay. He snared fellow protégé Jewel Andrew, thanks to Brook’s flying catch.
Jacob Bethell will have learned an immeasurable amount from sharing a dressing room with an all-time great like Virat Kohli, playing under a coach like Andy Flower and opening the batting against Mitchell Starc, who called him “an absolute gun”. Speaking after the match, the youngster Jacob Bethell opened up on his learnings from his maiden IPL (Indian Premier League) stint and shared his experience of batting with Virat Kohli in Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Virat Kohli was great- Jacob Bethell
England cricketer and RCB star Jacob Bethell recently spoke up on working alongside superstar Indian cricketer Virat Kohli. The Englishman revealed that he enjoyed being around the overseas cricketers and also revealed that it was electrifying whenever he walked out to bat during match day with Virat by his side.
Virat Kohli has been one of the influential members of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru over the years. The Indian cricketer has been a part of the Bengaluru-based franchise since its inception, and he has cemented a unique legacy with the side. Over the years, several players have been under Kohli’s wing and have witnessed him as a leader and a teammate.
Jacob Bethell helped England win the first ODI of the series against the West Indies to start the English coloured clothing summer on a high note. The lower order batter won the Player of the Match award with his 82(53) and 1/18 against the two-time ODI World Cup winners. After the match, he spoke about how Virat Kohli helped his game evolve in a matter of just a few months.
The southpaw claimed that his stint with RCB in the IPL 2025 was beneficial, as he regards himself to be a better player than he was before playing the league. The emerging star said Virat was great with his information, and all he had to do was ask him. Bethell felt it was great to be a part of RCB and added that he felt special.
“I found that experience very beneficial for my game. I feel like I am a better player now than I was two months before I went to India. Virat Kohli was great with the information and how he goes about his batting. All I had to do was ask, and he was great with that stuff. Being a part of that tournament was special. There is a lot of noise around it, so it was great to be a part of it,” said Bethell in the post-match conversation.
The England batter added that he enjoyed playing in the middle when he didn’t get chances and stepped up when he had to replace Phil Salt for a couple of matches. Bethell said that Virat and Andy Flower helped him and added that there was different energy and intensity when he walked out to bat with Kohli and wished to continue it in his game.
“I was always going to be in the IPL after I signed that contract. I watched the boys do well from afar and enjoyed it. Virat was great. He was happy to share lots of advice with me, and Andy Flower was a great coach, too. I felt the energy when I went out to bat with Virat, and that is something I will take into my game, that intensity,” Bethell added.
The Englishman left the RCB squad to join England for the ODI series against the West Indies. Before doing so, he played two games for the Bengaluru-based franchise and scored 67 runs at an average of 33.50 and a strike rate of 171.79. On the other hand, Virat has been brilliant with 614 runs in 14 innings at an average of 55.81 and a strike rate of 146.53, including a whopping eight 50+ scores in the IPL 2025.
Jacob Bethell was bought for Rs 2.6 Crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction and batted twice for RCB, opening alongside Virat Kohli. The 21-year-old scored 12 (6) in his first outing against Delhi Capitals (DC) and further scored a quick-fire 55 (33) in his second outing against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during Match 52.
He added 97 runs for the first wicket with Virat Kohli (62 off 33) off 59 balls as the duo got RCB off to a fiery start. However, Bethell’s debut IPL season was cut short midway as he had to leave RCB just ahead of the playoffs to participate in the ongoing ODI series against West Indies.
Jacob Bethell, as the disruptor, is not worried. He remains the chaser rather than the chased, pre-occupied by the day-to-day establishing of himself in the white-ball sides to focus squarely on what Test cricket might hold for him this year. Nevertheless, this season’s highest-profile challenge is next month’s five-Test series against India, which leads into the winter’s Ashes. As for any awkwardness that his precocity may have caused his Test captain and vice last week, the IPL gave him the perfect alibi for the England test series vs India.
