Captain Harry Brook led from the front brutally as his breathtaking ton destroyed Sri Lanka. Harry Brook, coming in at 3, just took the game to Sri Lanka and later away from them as England drew first blood in the series by thrashing Sri Lanka by a massive 119 runs. The hosts outclassed the visitors in all aspects of the game. Harry Brook’s unbeaten 114 off 49 balls overshadowed a splendid innings from Jos Buttler as well, who made 80 off 44 balls as England amassed a massive 254/4 in Southampton.
In the second innings, Sri Lanka never really got going as a few of them got 20s and 30s as they were bowled out for 135 in 19 overs. All-round, England were fantastic with the ball, with Sonny Baker taking 3/12 while the others chipped in with all 6 bowlers used amongst the wickets. England are riding on confidence and lead the series 1-0, and it will be difficult for Sri Lanka to mount a fightback from here.
Harry Brook’s splendid ton powers England to 254/4 in 20 overs
Put into bat first, keeper-batter Jos Buttler and Aneurin Donald opened the batting for England while Maheesh Theekshana had the ball in hand for Sri Lanka. England were off and running in their style as Buttler took the bowling to the cleaners and so did Donald in the few balls he faced. The duo helped England race to 31 in 2 overs before the opening partnership was abruptly ended with Donald falling for 12 off 5 balls with one four and one six to his name to Dunith Wellalage. Captain Harry Brook came out to bat next.
There was no looking back from here as England asserted their dominance courtesy of their skipper Brook and keeper batter Buttler. The duo just obliterated the Sri Lankan bowling and took everyone that came their way. To put things into perspective, England raced to 90/1 in the power play of 6 overs and the platform was set for a huge total. That was not all; they aced the middle phase of the game as well.
Wellalage did get the first breakthrough, but he was hammered by Brook for 30 runs in a single over inside the power play. Brook was in the zone and unstoppable while Buttler did his bit as the two senior players complemented each other really well. Both crossed fifties in a jiffy and raced towards their possible tons. The duo added 128 runs in a mere 60 balls and took the score to 159/1 in 12 overs before Buttler’s innings was brought to an end on 80 off 44 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes to his name, to Wanindu Hasaranga.
Tom Banton came in with the platform set for England to get 250+. Brook was unstoppable as Banton played the second fiddle in this partnership. The duo of Brook and Banton added 36 runs for the third wicket before Banton fell for 10 off 10 balls to Dushmantha Chameera. Will Jacks came out to bat with the score at 195/3 in the 16th over, and we were in the final phase of the game.
Jacks played the perfect role of the finisher while Brook completed his majestic ton to the round of applause in Southampton. The duo aced the death overs phase, adding 59 runs in the last 27 balls to help England go past 250. Brook remained unbeaten on 114 off 49 balls with 10 fours and 6 sixes to his name while Jacks remained unbeaten on 21 off 12 balls as England finished with a massive 254/4 in 20 overs. 17 extras were gifted by the Sri Lankan cricket team.
It was a day to forget for the Sri Lankan bowlers. Wanindu Hasaranga, amidst the carnage, bowled decently for his 1/34 in 4 overs. Eshan Malinga finished with 1/41 in 4 overs. Dushmantha Chameera finished with 1/53 in 4 overs. Dunith Wellalage finished with 1/51 in 3 overs, with 30 coming off one over in that. Maheesh Theekshana bowled 2 overs for 27 runs while Dasun Shanaka delivered 3 overs for 42 runs. This meant that Sri Lanka had a massive target of 255 runs to win off 20 overs for an improbable win.
All-round England, led by Sonny Baker’s 3/12, skittled Sri Lanka out for 135 in 19 overs
Chasing a massive 255 for the win, Pathum Nissanka and keeper batter Kamil Mishara came out to open the batting for Sri Lanka while Sonny Baker had the new ball in hand for England. The duo gave Sri Lanka a slow, steady start as they added 20 runs in less than a run a ball before Nissanka was prized out for 12 off 11 balls with 1 six to his name by Will Jacks. Lahiru Udara came out to bat next. Mishara and Udara added 11 more runs to the tally before the former fell for 10 off 14 balls with one four to his name to Sonny Baker, who cleaned him up.
Captain Charith Asalanka came out to bat next. Just one run was added to the score before Udara fell for 5 off 7 balls with one four to his name to Baker, who had two wickets in the over as Sri Lanka were 3 down in the power play. Sri Lanka were 32/3 after the end of 6 overs of power play and were nowhere in the chase. Dasun Shanaka had joined Asalanka in the middle for the middle overs phase of the game.
Asalanka and Shanaka tried to forge some sort of a partnership and comeback and added 20 runs for the 4th wicket before the captain Asalanka fell for 10 off 9 balls with one four to his name to Liam Dawson. Kamindu Mendis came out to bat next. Shanaka and Kamindu added 17 runs for the 5th wicket with Shanaka scoring the bulk of the runs. The score reached 69 in the 10th over when Shanaka fell for 24 off 14 balls with one four and two sixes to his name to Adil Rashid. Wanindu Hasaranga came out to bat with Sri Lanka losing half the side by 10 overs.
Kamindu and Hasaranga could add just 5 runs to the score before Kamindu fell for 2 off 8 balls to Josh Tongue. Dunith Wellalage came out to bat next. Just 2 runs were added to the score before Hasaranga fell for 4 off 7 balls to Jamie Overton, who cleaned him up. Maheesh Theekshana came out to bat next with the score at 76/7 in 12 overs and the game sealed in favour of England.
Having said that, Wellalage decided to show some resistance and add some runs for his side to give the score some respectability. Wellalage and Theekshana added 21 runs for the 8th wicket before Theekshana fell for 4 off 8 balls to Baker. Dushmantha Chameera came out to bat next. Chameera and Wellalage took the team past 100 and added 17 runs for the 9th wicket before the set batter Wellalage fell for 33 off 21 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes to his name to Overton. Eshan Malinga came out to bat with the score at 114/9 in 16.4 overs.
Malinga and Chameera frustrated England a little bit, just delaying the inevitable. The duo managed to add 21 runs for the final wicket with the tail wagging a little bit before Chameera was the last man to be dismissed for 8 off 10 balls with one six to his name, to Liam Dawson, who cleaned him up. Malinga remained unbeaten on 13 off 5 balls with one four and one six to his name as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 135 in 19 overs. 10 extras were given by the fielding side.
Six bowlers were used by England, and all of them got a wicket. Sonny Baker was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/12 in 4 overs. Jamie Overton finished with 2/20 in 3 overs. Liam Dawson finished with 2/23 in 3 overs. Josh Tongue was impressive with 1/25 in 4 overs. Will Jacks finished with 1/21 in 2 overs. Adil Rashid finished with 1/31 in 3 overs. So, England thrash Sri Lanka by 119 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match T20I series. Harry Brook, the England captain, was awarded the Player of the Match Award.
What Lies Ahead
So, England lead the series 1-0 after a thumping win over Sri Lanka by 119 runs and will want to seal the series in the next match. The next T20I, the second of the series, will come to us from Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, Wales, England on 17th September, 2026 at 11 PM IST. England aims to seal the deal and be clinical. Can Sri Lanka recover from this drubbing, show character and bounce back in Cardiff on Thursday night? Only time will tell.
