ENG vs IND: Ravichandran Ashwin’s Unique Take On Kuldeep Yadav’s Absence In 2nd Test Match

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin voiced his optimism that the Indian team would not regret the omission of Kuldeep Yadav in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) on Thursday, the 38-year-old remarked that England’s chances of securing a win appeared “distant.” His comment came after India’s dominant batting display had put the hosts under pressure during the first two days of the match.

Meanwhile, India’s decision to exclude left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav from the playing XI has drawn criticism from several former players and cricket experts. The backlash intensified as the visitors also opted to rest pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, raising questions about the team’s selection strategy for the crucial Test.

“With loads of runs on the board and an England win seeming very
distant, I hope India don’t miss @imkuldeep18. Sincerely hope I am
wrong,” Ashwin wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, July 3.

Kuldeep Yadav was left out of the playing XI as India chose to strengthen their batting lineup by including Washington Sundar as the second spinner. The decision seemed to pay off with the bat, as the all-rounder contributed a valuable 42 runs and shared a crucial 144-run partnership for the seventh wicket with captain Shubman Gill.

Shubman Gill delivered a remarkable captain’s innings, amassing 269 runs from 387 deliveries to propel India to a massive first-innings total of 587. He was well-supported by Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who chipped in with impressive knocks of 89 and 87, respectively.

Karun Nair and Rishabh Pant made promising starts but couldn’t convert them into substantial scores, while England’s bowling effort was led by Shoaib Bashir with figures of 3 for 167. Despite that, India posted their highest-ever total at Edgbaston. With the batters having laid a strong foundation, the responsibility now lies with the bowlers to push for a win and bring the series level at 1-1 before the teams move to Lord’s.
